[18:01:52] <plut0> On Ubuntu 18.04, installed a new kernel version and custom built the zfs modules, same script I've been using in the past with no issues. update-initramfs is not copying zfs.ko to the initramfs even though the file exists in /lib/modules. It copied other zfs modules but not zfs.ko. Any idea why?
[18:06:49] <ratrace> plut0: is there /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/zfs ?
[18:07:01] <plut0> yes

[18:09:16] <ratrace> no idea then. ubuntu already is packaging zfs so you'll probably have a bit of hard time working around/against that
[18:11:15] <ratrace> plut0: looked into the initramfs hook and helper functions it uses. it won't copy of the file exists in target location already
[18:11:26] <ratrace> so yeha... hard time working against already packaged zfs

[18:11:47] <ratrace> %s/of the file/if the file/
[18:12:02] <plut0> my script deletes the ubuntu packaged files to use the version I specify, theres no duplicate
[18:12:30] <ratrace> plut0: you can write your own initramfs hooks then to force-copy files
[18:12:57] <plut0> I'm trying to decipher it now, it's sourcing /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions and using it's functions
[18:13:08] <plut0> I'm guessing something is erroring out that is preventing the file copy
[18:13:26] <ratrace> yes. it's using copy_file() to do the actual copying, from manual_add_modules which is called from the zfs hook
[18:13:39] <plut0> right, i see that
[18:13:40] <ratrace> look at line 138
[18:13:44] <plut0> looking at those now

[18:15:26] <ratrace> plut0: look at the initramfs-tools manpage, section on HOOK SCRIPTS and what's the minimum form of it, then you can write your own copy functions, no need to call copy_file() at all
[18:15:49] <ratrace> just note WHERE it's copying to, in manual_add_modules()
[18:16:16] <ratrace> place your custom hook into /etc/initramfs-tools/hooks/
[18:16:36] <plut0> This is the verbose output of update-initramfs for spl/zfs, https://pastebin.com/SnZvJpfS
[18:16:37] <zfs-bot> [ initramfs - Pastebin.com ] - pastebin.com
[18:16:39] <ratrace> I'm doing exactly that, but not for ZFS, for crypto because default crypttab behavior is idiotic.
[18:16:45] <plut0> You can see it copies some zfs modules but not all

[20:39:22] <pcd> DeHackEd: the btrfs thing still exists, though you can't do any writes to the ext filesystem unless you decide to revert
[20:39:30] <pcd> but that's a bit more advanced in that it has the same contents in each
[20:39:47] <pcd> this just basically squirrels away separate data areas inside the same disk image so they are all independently writable

[21:38:50] <DHE> gg10: there is an issue if you're not in the root mount namespace. only that one gets the snapshots dynamically mounted
