[19:46:45] <gamester> There's a way in D3D12 to have fullscreen windowed apps control flipping, allowing tearing. I assume this is an example of something that Windows is hoarding for their API and it's not something that's possible through Vulkan?
[19:48:09] <mirv_> I think you mean VK_PRESENT_MODE_IMMEDIATE_KHR?
[19:48:43] <mirv_> though for completeness, it should be queried if supported by an implementation
[19:51:40] *** davr0s <davr0s!~textual@host109-150-28-226.range109-150.btcentralplus.com> has joined ##vulkan
[20:03:27] <gamester> Yeah it would be seen through that I guess. Nvidia doesn't support immediate mode at all, at least on windows. What confuses me is that one would think that a mode like immediate would depend on whether or not the surface covers the whole monitor, allowing the compositor to get out of the way.
[20:09:09] <mirv_> while I can think of reasons that Windows wouldn't allow it even in fullscreen, it'd be basically stabs in the dark for me, sorry

[20:33:21] <gamester> What would happen if a window were dragged to another monitor that's controlled by a different GPU? I assume operating systems support this.
[20:34:21] <ratchetfreak> the image gets sent over to the other display controller
[20:34:50] <gamester> does the surface not get lost?
[20:36:39] <gamester> I would have guessed that the presentation support would go away since the surface is on a different monitor, but maybe not
[20:39:57] <Yaniel> that sounds like a scenario where you could legitimately get a device lost error

[20:42:12] <sharpneli> I'd guess just swapchain gets destroyed and you cannot create a new one anymore
[20:42:17] <sharpneli> But regardless. Implementation defined.
[20:46:41] <gamester> I got confused, surface getting lost doesn't make sense
[20:53:59] <gamester> Might the supported present modes for a given surface and physical device change over time due to things like resizing the surface? Right now I just query for present modes once and that's also how vulkan.gpuinfo.org presents it.
[20:54:20] <gamester> I'm thinking immediate mode becoming available when surface is made fullscreen
[20:54:49] <gamester> theoretically
[21:02:10] <sharpneli> Resize is one thing that indeed can cause surface lost
[21:05:40] <gamester> whoops, right. I'm curious how vulkan.gpuinfo.org checks for supports if it would depend on size of the window. Does it try fullscreen and windowed and publish a union of the present modes? I'll have to look at the source I guess.
[21:16:12] <sharpneli> In general a system with single GPU just gives you a single set of them
[21:16:36] <sharpneli> In Windows you can go to the true fullscreen mode with weird DXGI stuff but that's shunned now. Just go bordlerless fullscreen.

[21:35:36] <gamester> sharpneli: Yes, and in borderless fullscreen on D3D12 you can now directly control presentation and even cause tearing, if you so like, even though you're in windowed mode.
[21:36:16] <gamester> in other words you get the full efficiency of fullscreen in windowed mode
[21:36:44] <gamester> the API seems to be much more powerful than on vulkan at the moment
[21:38:06] <sharpneli> Ah they introduced some new things into DXGI then
[21:40:33] <sharpneli> Vulkan does allow you to cause tearing. As an example AMD on windows allows it. It's just implementation defined. Nvidia for some reason doesn't allow tearing
[21:49:40] <gamester> Right, AMD exposes that by supporting immediate mode. But immediate mode only makes sense in fullscreen or borderless fullscreen, so I assume the supported presentation modes would have to change depending on the surface.
[21:50:04] <chrisf> only makes sense?
[21:51:51] <sharpneli> Iirc you can select it even without fullscreen window and it works fine
[21:52:21] <gamester> oh I guess you could keep handing the compositor a new image that it just won't use, ok I see
[21:53:08] <chrisf> gamester: some of us have loads of planes in the display controller, and so the `compositor` is just orchestrating that.
[21:54:03] <chrisf> gamester: immediate + non-fullscreen can be quite possible
[21:56:16] <gamester> yeah I got stuck to the idea that immediate would mean the application has control of the flipping, which is wrong, and as you can even with a small window you could still have control of a plane
[21:56:25] <gamester> as you say*
[21:56:35] <gamester> I need sleep
