[00:20:03] <Smithx10> Yeah, it would be exciting to get into rust if you start adopting it
[00:20:18] <Smithx10> Give a great excuse to learn it a little
[00:23:49] <Smithx10> Will the post Mortem debugging experience be similar to node ?
[00:24:04] <jbk> that would be the goal
[00:24:14] <Smithx10> Any challenges right now ?
[00:24:15] <jbk> though that is the result of quite a bit of work over time
[00:24:38] <jbk> or rather the experience w/ node was the result of that
[00:24:50] <Smithx10> I was hoping that post mortem golang would have been a thing
[00:25:02] <Smithx10> But it seems that won’t come to fruition any time soon
[00:25:22] <jbk> well go seems to make itself hostile to anything that isn't linux
[00:25:29] <Smithx10> I noticed
[00:25:37] <Smithx10> From the golang issues
[00:26:07] <jbk> so it wouldn't surprise me if there were challenges there
[00:26:39] <Smithx10> Does rust have any go’isms?
[00:27:12] <Smithx10> I read the blogs on dtrace .org
[00:29:38] <jbk> well so far as we've dipped our toes in, nothing i've heard
[00:33:30] <jbk> we do actually have a small amount of go in production
[00:37:30] <Smithx10> The Postgres thing ?
[00:37:55] <Smithx10> Is that bundled with manatee ?
[00:38:56] <jbk> i don't know how it's bundled, but the wal prefaulter
[00:39:18] <jbk> since you know, threads are far too new and unproven for postgres :)

[00:48:57] <Smithx10> Hahahahaha silly
[00:50:00] <jbk> though it makes you wonder why no one else has seen it
[00:50:26] <jbk> the problem is that on your primary (if doing replication) writes are inherently multithreaded (multiple processes)
[00:50:51] <jbk> but when you send the logs over to apply to a replica, those writes are being applied single threaded
[00:52:03] <jbk> so it basically scans ahead of the logs being applied and reads the tables (multi threaded) that'll be modified to make sure they're cached
[00:52:14] <jbk> or else you spend a _lot_ of time just waiting for them to be read in while you apply the log
[00:58:32] <sjorge> Smithx10: nothing major, unsetting some
[00:58:49] <sjorge> Properties when already unset now error
[00:59:15] <sjorge> I kind of missed that case when going over the cr initially
[00:59:54] <Smithx10> jbk: you’d think someone would have noticed that lol

[01:02:03] <jubal_> hi all - happy new year! say i want to disable the smap cpu feature via kmdb as commented here: https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/blob/3ab8de02e091bc75fc50aafc5cbe32c053451d88/usr/src/uts/i86pc/os/startup.c#L292
[01:02:49] <jubal_> i've tried a few incantations, but cant seem to get that value set to 1 from kmdb -- anybody have a cluebat handy for me? :)
[01:03:21] <jubal_> (I'm messing about with illumos on google compute while I've got some spare time on my hands :)
[01:04:02] <jbk> try adding -k to the boot args, that should dump you into kmdb
[01:04:36] <jbk> then try maybe '::bp startup_smap' then ':c', and it should hopefully break at the top of startup_smap
[01:04:42] <jbk> and you should be able to change it and continue
[01:05:09] <jubal_> cool - thanks jbk - trying to get my bearings :)
[01:06:20] <jbk> I've not tried overriding /etc/system w/ smartos
[01:06:54] <jbk> since it's booting off what is essentially a read-only image, you can't just edit it and reboot like on omnios or solaris
[01:07:13] <jbk> but there is a mechanism to override certain files at boot time
[01:07:34] <jubal_> awesome - it hit the breakpoint - and then i'm picturing i do a disable_smap/W 0x1 to write the value
[01:07:37] <jbk> but i don't know if /etc/system is used too early for it to work or not
[01:07:46] <jbk> yeah, then you should be able to :c
[01:07:50] <jbk> and it should continue as usual
[01:08:09] <jbk> (you can also build your own image and edit it prior to constructing the image)
[01:09:07] <jubal_> roger that - nearly got it - i'll fiddle :) Thanks jbk

[01:27:43] <jubal_> will do rmustacc :) is opteron 2374he too old?

[17:22:23] <greenline> We have a user whose shell is /bin/tcsh, but that is not present in SmartOS containers on Triton. /opt/local/bin/tcsh is installed of course, but I cannot symlink it due /usr being read only (in container, and on compute node). Is there a supported way to make changes to /usr on compute nodes (and therefore in infra containers)?
[17:25:41] <rmustacc> greenline: There isn't a good way to do that, but can you change the user's shell to /opt/local/bin/tcsh?
[17:27:45] <greenline> That is possible, though then we'd have to add a symlink the other way around for all our non-smartos systems.

[17:43:22] <greenline> Part of the general resistance we are experiencing is that we're currently using a smartos container as a login node, and there is some friction in doing that, because the platform seems much better suited to cloudy application hosting.
[17:44:52] <bdha> There can be some tension there, if people aren't sold on the benefits when they aren't used to the platform.
[17:45:13] <bdha> But if you modify usage it's fine as a user/dev layer.

[20:34:18] <jbk> m1cr0man: can you be more specific?
[20:34:57] <jbk> the smf(5) man page explains the different types of dependencies you can define
[20:35:00] <m1cr0man> ok well basically I have a service that builds the /etc/ipf/ipf.conf from a directory of fragments on boot/when it is run. I want to restart the ipf service when that one runs
[20:35:17] <m1cr0man> Yeah I have it setup already so restarting ipf will restart my fragment updater but I want to do it the other awy
[20:35:20] <m1cr0man> way*
[20:36:56] <m1cr0man> Maybe I can just skip the ipfilter service altogether..I could just run the commands to flush + import the new rules every time. I just figured it did more than load the config.
[20:40:23] <jbk> if ipf depends on the assembly service, i think you can probably add 'restart_on='refresh' in the dependency
[20:44:10] <jbk> i.e. in your service manifest, something like (this is off the top of my head, so might need some tweaking) <dependent name='mysvc_ipf' grouping='require_all' restart_on='refresh' type='service'> <service_fmri value='svc:/network/ipfilter:default' /> </dependent>
[20:46:21] <jbk> the terminology is a bit confusing because the names are so similar, but in your service, you can both define services that you depend on, and can make other existing services depend on your service
[20:46:44] <jbk> (i.e. add your service as a dependency to another service)

[21:47:39] <arekinath> I still want to train a markov chain on the SMF man pages
[21:47:45] <jbk> I don't know why they didn't just go whole hog and just write it out in set notation
[21:47:59] <arekinath> it might be easier to understand in set notation
[21:48:09] <arekinath> or some ascii diagrams idk
[21:55:03] <arekinath> https://lax.manta.blenco.net.au/alex/public/svcprop.png
[21:56:48] <jbk> haha
[21:56:55] <Smithx10> arekinath: that is the best thing I've ever seen.
[22:01:55] <m1cr0man> I think I found a way to contribute to smartos..
[22:01:57] <m1cr0man> more memes
[22:06:26] <arekinath> niche mems
[22:10:06] <jesse_> nice memes
[22:11:11] <jesse_> ...maybe use an outline on the font to get around the fire burning the text? :P

[22:21:57] <adam_vollrath> What's the best way to monitor the health of SmartOS / Triton nodes? Is installing a Nagios NRPE agent into the global zone a good idea? Does Triton expose telemetry some other way?

[22:24:39] <adam_vollrath> maybe that's what this is for? https://apidocs.joyent.com/cloudapi/#appendix-b-cloud-analytics

[22:37:15] <muchomas> adam_vollrath: cloud analytics is being depricated, based on the recent changelogs, but you may be interested in cmon + prometheus (RFD 27 - https://github.com/joyent/rfd/blob/master/rfd/0027/README.md) for customer zones
[22:37:16] <jinni> https://github.com/joyent/rfd/tree/master/rfd/0027
[22:37:22] <muchomas> jinx!
[22:39:31] <muchomas> there's also "not production ready" work being done here for monitoring triton core services with same: https://github.com/joyent/triton-prometheus
