[00:31:21] <ipalreadytaken> nahamu: fwiw I think its the wrong approach. If the os can operate without something it should be kept minimal. I understand the desire to simplify the ux but i think its the wrong approach. The correct approach is to fix the application so it can be loaded after boot time.
[00:57:35] <nahamu> ipalreadytaken: huh?
[00:58:33] <nahamu> which application?
[00:58:43] <ipalreadytaken> sdc
[00:59:21] <nahamu> right. I'm not aiming at the SDC USB image. just the kernel and boot archive which are very similar already.
[00:59:58] <ipalreadytaken> nahamu: i see, i thought you where trying to have smartos boot to sdc headnode with a boot param
[01:00:52] <nahamu> no no.
[01:02:44] <ipalreadytaken> good to hear :P
[01:03:51] <ipalreadytaken> out of curriosity can you give a 1 line summary on the diff between smartos and sdc platform images? What are the doing differently
[01:10:28] <nahamu> different "installers" e.g. smartos asks which disks to use, SDC uses them all in whatever it deems the best configuration. also SDC ships with a few additional pieces of software.
[01:10:45] <ipalreadytaken> oh isee
[01:12:09] <nahamu> but there's nearly enough plumbing already in place to make it possible to have one boot archive behave as either SmartOS or SDC depending on kernel command line arguments.
[01:12:27] <nahamu> one bonus of that is that Joyent have CI servers that rebuild the SDC platform on every commit.
[01:12:35] <nahamu> while SmartOS builds only come out every two weeks.
[01:12:48] <ipalreadytaken> do the sdc pi have the fixed grub?
[01:13:10] <nahamu> well, the SDC usb sticks ship with lots of other stuff on them.
[01:13:28] <nahamu> ideally the SmartOS USB sticks need to be built differently.
[01:13:35] <nahamu> that's a bit trickier to fix.
[01:13:53] <ipalreadytaken> ive gathered that much. it sounds like the usb build process is pretty old and stale
[01:14:15] <nahamu> for SmartOS, yes. SDC has a very nice grub setup.
[01:22:25] <ipalreadytaken> do they still have the critter for the boot screen?
[01:22:33] <ipalreadytaken> i always got a kick out of that thing
[01:25:11] <nahamu> I don't think SDC7 has that. I think only SDC6 had it.
[01:25:22] <ipalreadytaken> oh sad
[01:25:39] <nahamu> but I think bdha put it onto and SDC7 stick and posted screenshots on twitter...
[01:25:49] <nahamu> or maybe it was SDC6... I'm not sure.
[01:26:46] <nahamu> or maybe the PXE server has it but not the headnode.

[01:27:11] <ipalreadytaken> haha nice
[01:29:27] <konobi> sdc 6 only

[03:42:53] <konobi> ooohhh...
[03:43:07] <konobi> anyone job hunting at the moment?
[03:43:36] <trentster> why are you hiring?
[03:44:18] <DigiDaz> Hey mornign trentster I'm just about to go bed but the day went reaqlly well with the fusionpbx in the zone
[03:45:15] <trentster> DigiDaz: thats great mate - what did you do about firewall port range?
[03:45:26] <DigiDaz> Just battled my way through another issue, thats why I'm up so late...
[03:46:06] <DigiDaz> That box was OK, they all come from statics, its just one company with about 50 extensions and 20 queues
[03:46:15] <trentster> so how many calls it handle today?
[03:47:05] <DigiDaz> I just migrated a web/email server to KVM and came across this:- How do you add an ip alias to a KVM like you would eth0:0 in linux
[03:48:09] <DigiDaz> Probably a few hundred, they are often quite long calls though. The volume isn't the interesting thing on that one, its all the queing, ivrs, time conditions, recording every call etc.
[03:48:14] <trentster> you mean in a zone non kvm machine?
[03:48:21] <DigiDaz> yep
[03:48:24] <trentster> or kvm on smartos?
[03:48:29] <DigiDaz> kvm
[03:49:01] <DigiDaz> The solution is, in the zone file you set it to dhcp
[03:49:17] <DigiDaz> but also a little bit more...
[03:49:39] <trentster> good question - must have info in vmadm man page
[03:49:48] <DigiDaz> <net-attr name="allow_ip_spoofing" value="true"/>
[03:50:23] <trentster> are you recording the calls to leo?
[03:50:25] <DigiDaz> Those too combined will allow the interfaces as defined in the kvm setup
[03:50:34] <trentster> cool
[03:51:01] <DigiDaz> No, not yet, thats the next step, tomorrow I'm gonna install another leo gateway on kvm
[03:51:16] <DigiDaz> ubuntu
[03:51:25] <trentster> so you recording to local zone disk at the mo?
[03:51:34] <DigiDaz> And run the nfs server
[03:51:44] <DigiDaz> yep, local zone right now
[03:53:14] <trentster> nice - we can chat about the mibe stuff tomorrow if you like - when you are bright eyed and bush tailed
[03:54:50] <trentster> the leo nfs server / gateway should work in a zone if its userland weird you having issues
[03:55:52] <trentster> konobi: ping
[03:56:17] <DigiDaz> Yep, I need to grab a little sleep now, I just backed that zone up, df -h shows 15GB used, its compressed it down to 8.7gb, thats good in itself but what makes it much more impressive is that the majority of that 15gb comes from mp3 recordings which you wouldn't have thought would compress
[03:56:48] <DigiDaz> trentster: I'll try again tomorrow but it failed to start last time
[03:57:10] <DigiDaz> right see you in a few hours!
[03:57:30] <trentster> DigiDaz: lz4 is very good
[03:57:38] <trentster> DigiDaz: rest well mate
[04:17:27] <konobi> trentster: ?
[04:17:59] <konobi> trentster: oh... we're looking for devs and ops folks... in SFO or YVR
[04:26:07] <trentster> konobi: I will send the message around to folks i know - which company you with these days?
[05:48:34] <konobi> trentster: saucelabs
[05:49:51] <trentster> konobi: sounds delicious :-P
[06:00:40] <trentster> Nice website
[06:10:43] <konobi> trentster: lots of very interesting issues to look at
