[08:39:24] <MACscr> so something like dovecot is really needed just to receive an incoming email from a remote server? Im just setting up an incoming anti spam gateway. Trying to keep it as slim as possible
[08:39:41] <MACscr> i thought dovecot was more a pop3/imap server
[08:41:18] <rob0> Who told you Dovecot was needed? Where did you see that?
[08:42:16] <MACscr> rob0: well i know its already configured on this stack that im using and i see it listed under smtpd_sasl_type
[08:42:55] <rob0> If you're using SASL AUTH, you do need a SASL backend, and Dovecot is one of two possible backends.
[08:43:36] <rob0> But if you're handling incoming (MX) mail only, you don't need submission and don't need SASL AUTH.
[08:43:40] *** magyar has joined #postfix
[08:45:16] <MACscr> this was an incoming connection that seemed to get refused http://paste.debian.net/plain/367367
[08:45:23] <MACscr> just an email coming from rackspace
[08:53:39] <rob0> You have enabled SASL AUTH without a SASL backend.
[08:56:24] <MACscr> i guess i need to look up what sasl auth actually is. i wouldnt think any auth would actually take place between two public servers
[09:00:38] *** ananayarora has joined #postfix

[09:03:51] <MACscr> which the server is never used that way, so it shouldnt be needed. I set it from enabled to disabled and now it does at least get received. It does throw a new error (postfix/smtpd[14968]: warning: restriction `reject_authenticated_sender_login_mismatch' ignored: no SASL support), but i will look into that first as its probably just another config i need to disable or comment out. Thanks for helpi
[09:03:51] <MACscr> ng me wrap my head around things.
[09:04:46] <rob0> that's a warning, not an error, and it tells you basically what to do. Yw.

[09:10:54] <rob0> I personally never had much use for clamav, and that time when they made a change in their data source which broke non-upgraded mail servers, that was ugly.
[09:11:11] <MACscr> great. thanks. almost forgot about that
[09:11:29] <MACscr> i get what you mean. av in general isnt that useful
[09:13:10] <MACscr> im setting up a small 3 node cluster with low end ssd backed vm's. clamav is definitely a memory hog
[09:14:24] <pj> I still use clamav, but it does actually require a lot of RAM to run and if you don't have it to spare it's not a great loss.

[15:39:28] <rob0> I don't know. Postfix has a default_database_type, and usually that's BDB.

[15:47:48] <rob0> You're in unexplored territory. I have, however, seen the issue come up on the mailing list. Maybe see what Wietse has said?
[15:48:37] <skyroveRR> I'll just compile postfix with db support.......
[15:48:59] <lunaphyte> in theory, both plain text and text hash map types are probably just fine to use in place of bdb, as long as the various data sets are small. however, there may be mechanisms postfix uses bdb for that cannot simply be replaced with something else

[20:53:45] <Sneida> I am running debian 8 with postfix + dovecot and need some help in setting up the correct domain/ip entries for: rDNS, DNS, /etc/hosts, /etc/hostname, /etc/mailname/ and /etc/postfix/main.cf (mydomain= and myhostname=). Can anyone give me a quick help with that? Thanks !
[20:54:16] <Sneida> I am currently getting "BAD PTR" errors because of my wrong setup.

[21:07:28] <Sneida> tharkun, can I send you the pastebin in a privmsg/query ?
[21:08:35] <Sneida> And I could also provide a more detailed pastebin with outputs/configurations/problem description.
[21:09:37] <tharkun> Sneida: I'm about leaving the office in about 2 mins and I will not be having Internet connectio up until monday. In a nutshell on /etc/hosts just state the canonical name of your machine and set up the proper rdns records on your public dns server.
[21:10:34] <tharkun> After fixing that then do the postconf exercise once a gain and take a good look at the logs. postfix is very straight forward to say what is wrong with its configuration.
[21:10:57] <tharkun> Now of for the weekend. (Unless someone breaks something.)
[21:10:57] <Sneida> Well the problem is more complicated.. I have my domain.com but it is actually used as a webpage (+ therefor as customer/domain in my webhosting interface) so I am using s1.domain.com as FQDN/Hostname but I am not sure where to set what.
[21:11:59] <tharkun> example.com can host http and smtpd without a problem. They use different ports.

[21:22:38] <Sneida> but I guess your are off already :(
[21:23:23] <Zerberus> no, it is not fine to run all that on a single server
[21:25:23] <Sneida> Okay, in any case, I am doing it for now. And besides the PTR and hostname/hosts/fqdn-setting everything seems to be working. I would appreciate if anyone could look at my domain/hostname configuration and tell me which entries I have to do for "hosts, resolve.conf, /postfix/main.cf (mydomain + myhostname), rDNS, DNS-MX-Record, /etc/hostname and /etc/mailname"
[21:25:49] <lunaphyte> i don't know, it might be ok. it certainly adds complexity to things though

[21:28:59] <jaybe> one issue
[21:31:12] <Sneida> I need someone to check my "hosts, resolve.conf, /postfix/main.cf (mydomain + myhostname), rDNS, DNS-MX-Record, /etc/hostname and /etc/mailname" and tell me which entries I have to make for my case (www.domain.com = a webpage, so I would use s1.domain.com for hostname/fqdn/etc).

[21:39:00] <Sneida> Okay, how to fix my "BAD PTR" error
[21:39:01] <Sneida> :D
[21:39:24] <jaybe> a bad PRT means the 'reverse dns' for an IP address does not resolve to the corresponding forward dns
[21:39:32] <Sneida> exactly
[21:39:36] <jaybe> it resolves around DNS
[21:39:46] <jaybe> contact your DNS provider and have a proper PTR record configured
[21:39:48] <jaybe> next
[21:40:02] <Sneida> done, my PRT record is set so "s1.example.com"
[21:40:25] <jaybe> now test that internet propagation of the records has occurred; i.e. test forward and reverse dns

[22:53:08] <e38383> Sneida: MX records should only contain names. If you don't want mail to @s1.example.com you don't need the MX record there, you probably want the MX record at example.com and not s1.example.com.
