[23:34:12] <limgad> hi guys. I would like to know: is it possible to reinstall a package using IPS? There are some warnings when I run pkg verify and I would like to reinstall the package. (I'm on 11 express)
[23:34:43] <timsf> you don't need to reinstall, just use 'pkg fix'
[23:35:01] <richlowe> timsf: does verify not tell you that?
[23:35:12] <timsf> though there are some packages which are known to always produce verify warnings
[23:35:22] <timsf> packages containing python files, and libc
[23:35:30] <timsf> I think it does richlowe
[23:35:31] <limgad> aha
[23:35:37] <limgad> it was a python package
[23:35:59] <richlowe> python packages tend to break themselves, because of teh timestamp baked into the .pyc file
[23:36:03] <alanc> *.pyc files need special handling in pkging to avoid that
[23:36:04] <timsf> yep, the interpreter can touch the .pyc files causing them to appear to have cincorrect timestaps
[23:36:05] <timsf> right.
[23:36:18] <timsf> (sheesh, I can't type today)
[23:36:32] <timsf> Good thing I'm only writing documentation at the moment!
[23:36:37] * timsf coughs
[23:37:08] <limgad> so, the warnings about the .pyc files, I just ignore?
[23:37:32] <richlowe> if you can't fix the packages, yeah.
[23:37:35] <richlowe> not like you can report bugs anymore
[23:38:48] <limgad> the thing is: I can see that it reports the wrong group (along with the wrong hash), and I would think that this is something that pkg fix should... you know. Fix
[23:39:02] <timsf> it can fix them,
[23:39:12] <timsf> just that python will break them again if they get rewritten
[23:39:50] <limgad> awesome.
[23:39:57] <timsf> 18903 support for mountpoint labeling
[23:39:57] <timsf> fixes the libc problem
[23:40:22] <timsf> https://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=18903
[23:40:49] <limgad> 1 more thing: is there no reinstall mechanism in pkg? I am collecting some cheatsheets about package managers and I haven't found what to put on that spot
[23:41:14] <richlowe> pkg fix does the (useful) equivalent
[23:41:41] <limgad> great. I'll put that then.
[23:41:43] <timsf> reinstall is pointless when you've got the ability to create boot environments at will
[23:41:46] <limgad> thx for the help
[23:41:54] * limgad nods at timsf
[23:41:54] <timsf> pkg revert might also be useful
[23:42:11] <limgad> revert?
[23:42:18] <limgad> is there a revert option?
[23:42:28] <richlowe> not sure there is in S11X

[23:51:47] <richlowe> y'all need to discover ronn
[23:51:53] <richlowe> and, you know, change your entire docs workflow :)
[23:55:19] <timsf> ronn?
[23:55:40] <timsf> (the rst for the dev guide is a little more readable, thankfully)
[23:56:09] <richlowe> timsf: ronn converts slightly unusual markdown to nroff -man
[23:56:14] <richlowe> it is the bees knees
[23:56:26] <richlowe> github.com/rtomayko/ronn, iirc
[23:57:00] <timsf> just googled it - yay another markup language to learn. why not rst?
[23:57:12] <richlowe> pretty sure markdown preceded rst
[23:57:26] <timsf> ah
[23:57:34] <richlowe> but I think the ultimate answer is "everything on github that formats text is markdown, so everyone's used to it"
[23:58:13] <timsf> I see.
[23:58:34] <richlowe> either way, you're comparing to the wrong format
[23:58:41] <richlowe> compare it to roff's 'an' macros :)
[23:58:51] <richlowe> oooh, ooh, or solbook!
[23:59:04] * timsf winces
[23:59:39] <timsf> I like sgml, but I just like other people to write it.
