[09:17:53] <Stric> each vdev has a setting (ashift) for alignment. ashift=12 is a google-worthy thing.

[09:30:41] <phretor> Stric: since this would be just a transition, I'm just worried about the *feasibility* of a mixed scenario. Performance will come when all the disks will be non-4K ;)
[09:31:47] <Stric> phretor: if you mix, you want alignment according to the one with the largest sector size
[09:32:21] <phretor> Stric: I know. However, my question is, what if I don't align?
[09:32:40] <Stric> Then you get bad performance

[17:29:36] <jdanna> does anybody know if dropping zfs_arc_max to somthing really low like 512meg or 1 gig on a machine with 8gigs of ram will kill performance too bad?
[17:29:56] <jdanna> im trying to run VMs, but once i get to a certain point they wont start because zfs is allocating a ton of my ram
[17:30:01] <jdanna> (i already have ot set to 2gig)
[17:34:47] <lblume> What kind of VM? VBox? Because AFAICT the system should show the ARC memory as free anyway for apps, so that should not prevent them from starting in any way.
[17:37:12] <lblume> And of course, what message are you getting that makes you feel that is the cause?
[17:37:30] <jdanna> vbox
[17:37:37] <jdanna> but im running it under oracle virtual desktop infrastructure
[17:38:23] <jdanna> there was a doc for oracle VDI telling me to drop it to 2 gigs
[17:38:47] <jdanna> cant get to it now cause wikis.sun.com seems to be down
[17:39:11] <jdanna> When Oracle VM VirtualBox and the Oracle VDI Core are installed on the same machine, ZFS uses any memory available (up to the limit) for a the ARC cache. This can cause issues, because the Oracle VDI Core may falsely report that there is not enough memory for starting up any virtual machine.
[17:39:16] <jdanna> To resolve this issue, adat the max value used for the ARC cache. For example, to restrict the memory to 22GB, add the following line in /etc/system:
[17:39:19] <jdanna> set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 2147483648
[17:41:09] <bradend> Well, as far as your performance impact concern - limiting the ARC does exactly as much - it doesn't cause a problem, you just don't get to use the ARC as much. If your ARC hitrate is low, the impact is far less noticeable anyways.
[17:42:00] <jdanna> im not really sure what arc does
[17:42:38] <bradend> The ARC is roughly an in-ram read-cache. Popular data is read from RAM instead of from the disk.
[17:42:58] <bradend> Really gives random read IO a shot in the arm, if it's in the cache.
[17:45:43] <jdanna> so if i set it to like 512meg it wont do anything relaly bad, just may slow things down a bit?
[17:45:48] <jdanna> i dont think im doing a ton of random reads
[17:46:19] <bradend> It won't do anything bad - and if you don't like the impact, you can always turn it back up.
[17:47:41] <bdha> "a bit" is a conservative way to put it. ZFS performance relies on in-memory cache. Perf will suck.
[17:48:05] <bdha> I find it hilarious that VirtualBox doesn't know how to deal with the ARC. :\
[17:48:11] <jdanna> is there a way to see how much im really using so i can get a gauge of how low i can go
[17:48:16] <jdanna> bdha: i think vritualbox does
[17:48:18] <jdanna> VDI doesnt
[17:48:24] <bdha> jdanna: echo ::memstat | mdb -k
[17:48:26] <bradend> Okay, will, I will clarify that you do need a certain minimum amount of ARC to live, depending on how much data you have.
[17:48:43] <bradend> You certainly need enough ARC to cache ZFS metadata.
[17:49:23] <bdha> I'd suggesting looking at SmartOS instead of VDI (or whatever), but there's a ZFS bug there that requires limiting zfs_max_arc too.
[17:49:29] <bdha> (serendipity!)
[17:49:42] <bdha> Though beyond that I'm much, much happier with SmartOS/KVM than vbox.
[17:49:50] <bradend> I'm also not clear on whether L2ARC mapping uses RAM as defined in max_arc or if it allocates separately.
[17:51:31] <jdanna> well the whole point is to use VDI to serve desktop VMs to sun rays
[17:51:54] <jdanna> zfs file data is about 1 gig
[17:51:59] <jdanna> is that what im looking for?
[17:54:25] <jdanna> im kinda regretting using zfs for this, i didnt realize how much ram it took
[17:54:49] *** twister004 has quit IRC
[17:55:02] <bdha> jdanna: Usually it's a good thing.
[17:55:07] <bdha> VDI is stupid.
[17:55:13] <jdanna> yea, maybe i just need to buy more ram
[17:55:32] <Stric> zfs uses what's free, unless you tell it otherwise
[17:55:37] <bdha> The ARC releases when an app mallocs. And otherwise, you want that cache.
[17:55:50] <bdha> VDI is trying to be smart, and failing.
[17:56:52] <jdanna> bdha: precisely.
[17:58:10] <jdanna> but other then that it really works good ;)
[17:58:20] <bdha> Everything has bugs. ;P
[17:58:24] <jdanna> maybe ill drop it to 1.5 since
[17:58:37] <jdanna> that should giev me some room
[17:58:44] <bdha> What I've done for this SmartOS bug is limit zfs_max_arc to 32GB on a 72GB system. That leaves 32GB for KVM instances.
[17:58:50] <bdha> er, max. But you get the idea.
[17:58:52] <bdha> math.
[17:59:12] <bdha> Getting paged every 10m for shit I don't care about after being up firefighting until 5AM isn't helping my brain.

[23:18:14] <Ether_Man> Any known problems with signing up on the opensolaris site atm? Not getting the confirmation email (and yes I've checked spam and everything). Kindof annoying since login is required to download the install ISOs :/
[23:19:50] <seanmcg> you may want the later ones from oracle.com instead which are updated versions (close to what will be the released version). The ones on opensolar.org are rather old
[23:20:07] <seanmcg> look for early access
[23:21:09] <Ether_Man> Well it's still an Oracle login, so doesnt really help though :)

[23:21:59] <Ether_Man> But I'll keep that in mind
[23:22:40] <alanc> the machines were down for facility (power grid) maintenance over the weekend, so perhaps something broke coming back up? mail website-admin at opensolaris dot org and they should be able to help
[23:24:24] <Ether_Man> Ah well.. I'll wait for a few more hours before starting that.. Could be just delay if it's been down :)
