[00:10:27] *** Shoggoth has joined #opensolaris
[00:10:55] <Shoggoth> hi all!
[00:11:57] <Shoggoth> I just installed the new Sol11 Early Access image and it seems that the "Primary Administrator" role has disappeared! Does anyone know what the deal is?
[00:13:21] <bdha> Replacing RBAC with sudo?
[00:13:25] <bdha> (guessing)
[00:15:05] <Shoggoth> :(
[00:15:44] <Shoggoth> also sys-unconfig seems to have been disappeared too
[00:16:37] <Shoggoth> seems you have to do a "sysconfig unconfigure" now
[00:17:35] <Shoggoth> bdha: was that an educated guess or a wild guess ?
[00:17:39] <lala> just like you need to click 'Start' in order to 'Shutdown' in windows ;p
[00:17:45] <Shoggoth> lol
[00:18:12] <bdha> Shoggoth: A bit of both, maybe.
[00:18:23] <Shoggoth> didn't you here that the "start" button is going....
[00:18:52] <Shoggoth> bdha: ok... so the educated bit... have you heard something that would indicate that oracle is planning to ditch rbac?
[00:19:50] <alanc> Primary Administrator was always considered a bug by the RBAC designers
[00:20:01] <Shoggoth> oh?
[00:20:07] <alanc> "do everything without authentication" not being a role they envisioned
[00:20:15] <bdha> ha.
[00:20:18] <Shoggoth> yeah... that's a fair point
[00:21:01] *** randomuser has quit IRC
[00:21:22] <alanc> they got rid of it in one of the RBAC update projects - I think the one that split the *_attr files into *_attr.d/* for easier pkg delivery
[00:21:33] <Shoggoth> I can see that upgrading to 11ea is not going to be a straight forward process
[00:22:17] <alanc> https://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=4885
[00:22:49] <Shoggoth> @alanc: thanks (as always)
[00:28:25] <alanc> btw, you should find EA has some improvements to make using rbac easier, in the CLI tools like useradd/usermod/rolemod

[02:23:54] <Ouro> if the order of devices in a zpool changes (plugged into different ports), will that be reflected in the 'zpool status' order?
[02:24:12] *** InTheWings has quit IRC
[02:35:10] <Triskelios> the order probably won't change until you reimport the pool again
[02:36:19] <Ouro> is there a simple way to identify the correct position of the device, perhaps by dd'ing its header?
[02:36:58] <Ouro> unfortunately i failed to label these :/
[02:37:32] *** ewdafa has quit IRC
[02:39:22] <Triskelios> "correct position"?
[02:41:41] <Ouro> in a raidz2, there is presumably some order to the devices
[02:42:10] <Ouro> i may or may not have swapped the ports on two of them, so now i am not sure how to tell them apart
[02:43:19] <Ouro> or are you saying that if the order is incorrect then the zpool will not work without an import?
[02:43:21] <Triskelios> no, there is no order
[02:43:21] <tsoome> zfs doesnt need that
[02:48:48] *** Mdx4 has quit IRC
[02:52:21] <Ouro> there must be an order internally, since some drives are data and some parity
[02:52:39] <Ouro> i realize that this does not need to correspond to the OS/controller order
[02:53:57] <Triskelios> no, that's not how RAID-Z works
[02:54:05] <Triskelios> all drives have data and parity stripes
[02:56:06] <tsoome> zfs is using disk id's or wwn, if you like, disk names are only for humans. if you wanna get correct names, export the pool and import it again, that will fix names.
[02:56:36] <Ouro> Triskelios: well, it rotates, but for each block two drives act as parity
[02:57:17] <Triskelios> Ouro: yes, and they're evenly distributed if the spindles are the same speed
[02:57:33] <Triskelios> and fairly randomly, not round-robin
[02:58:58] <Ouro> i understand that it is more or less symmetric, i just want to restore the original order for my own bookkeeping

[18:17:58] <cathode> Hi, I've currently got a FreeNAS 7.x server running with a RAID-Z1 on it. Its kind of slow and I was looking at some articles online that benchmarked OpenSolaris vs FreeNAS and the results were staggering... specifically: http://www.zfsbuild.com/2010/09/10/freenas-vs-opensolaris-zfs-benchmarks/
[18:18:26] <cathode> I'm curious as to whether I could install opensolaris on that machine and import the ZFS volume on it without losing any data?
[18:18:41] <cathode> freenas 7.x uses ZFS version 13 i think
[18:20:49] <RoyK> cathode: using opensolaris should work, but it's long dead - oracle closed the source tap and the project was forked to openindiana
[18:21:26] <cathode> ok, well the question should still apply... can i import a ZFS pool created in a different OS?
[18:21:36] <RoyK> yes
[18:21:49] <RoyK> zfs is consistent
[18:22:03] <cathode> hmm ok
[18:22:09] <RoyK> unless you try to import a pool from solaris 11, which is closed source
[18:22:21] <RoyK> cathode: /j #openindiana :)
