SAS expanders do undoubtedly complicate things and can be tricky to get configured right, and it may be that no amount of software workarounds can overcome that. I haven't used it under Linux or FreeBSD to see how well it behaves[03:21:19] <Teknix> my feeling is that it is both hardware and software, and there just isn't/wasn't enough focus due to other pressing issues. My advice is that if you want to go with SAS expanders, use them with LSI SAS2 cards. The 1068e chipset cards work fine in general with straight SAS or SATA[03:47:49] <Andys^> Teknix: i havent seen any evidence yet that this isnt just caused by using SATA drives on a SAS backplane which was not designed to be used for that purpose[03:58:25] <Andys^> OEMs of backplane chassis only certify their products for use with particular SATA drives. SATA has lower signal level which affects backplane[03:58:39] <Andys^> WD and Samsung disks in particular are weak signals which cause lots of CRC errors[03:59:43] <Teknix> it has happened to me with Sun SAS HBAs (rebranded LSI 1068e) with J4400 JBODs that use LSI SAS expanders and SATA drives. This was a completed supported solution from Sun but yet it still encountered these problems[03:59:57] <Teknix> s/completed/completely[04:02:22] <Andys^> supported as in - you used *Sun* SATA drives?[04:02:38] <Teknix> yes, drives supplied by Sun in the J4400s[04:02:43] <Teknix> that had Sun firmware[04:02:49] <victori_> is it me or does opensolaris in general have fair amount of kernel issues with stability? Granted it is the dev/prerelease branch[04:03:01] <Teknix> I encountered the same thing with supermicro 36 and 45 bay 846 chassis using LSI 1068e cards and SAS expanders with SATA drives. In both cases the problems disappeared when I switched to LSI SAS2 cards[04:03:33] <Andys^> Teknix: ok, thats different then[04:05:31] <Andys^> i solved the problem i had by switching from WD/Samsung disks to Seagate[04:05:40] <Andys^> w/ multiple supermicro chassis[04:06:46] <Teknix> one of the J4400s used Seagate, one of them used Hitachi (again, as provided by Sun). My supermicro chassis used Seagate. I had an iscsi mout on windows 2008 and loded data on to it. I then disconected, and mounted it on a linux box....[19:29:57] <sneezewort> at this point every thing was fine so i loaded more data from the linux server. I then disconected and mounted on the win 2008 server and it asked if I wanted to format![19:30:22] <sneezewort> I reconected to the linux and everything was there.[19:30:32] <viridari> sneezewort: Windows can't read Linux disk partition[19:30:41] <sneezewort> It's NTFS.[19:30:46] <viridari> d'oh[19:31:32] <sneezewort> I can now mount it in any linx iscsi initiator, but not windows.[19:31:53] <sneezewort> Windows sees it as raw.[19:32:10] <sneezewort> Any ideas?[19:32:39] <viridari> sorry I haven't touched Windows in over 5 years.
