[06:28:37] <cnagele> Hi everyone. I'm noticing pretty busy writes through iostat during times when activity should be low. Looking at iosnoop and iotop it's mostly from "sched". Any ideas on what would cause this?

[06:48:56] <kdavy> cnagele, can you tell where the writes go? to the data zpool or the syspool for example?
[06:49:18] <cnagele> Hey :) I was trying to find a tool to show that, but was not sure.
[06:49:34] <kdavy> it could be a runner process or an auto-service, likely a runner
[06:49:52] <cnagele> Although, from iotop I can see that it is writing to the devices in my pool that I use for NFS
[06:50:15] <kdavy> cnagele, inside nmc "show performance " -> tab complete will give you tons of options for watching what is going on
[06:51:40] <kdavy> if "sched" is an actual process (not sure it is?), you could also grab its PID from "prstat" and then "truss" it to see what it's doing - maybe the function names it calls will give you a hint
[06:52:31] <cnagele> The PID is 0. I am on 2.2 while we migrate, so the performance tools in nmc are not as good.
[06:52:49] *** Edgeman has quit IRC
[06:53:20] <kdavy> ah. hm. 0 means it's the kernel scheduler
[06:53:53] <kdavy> * kernel thread scheduler, iirc
[06:53:58] <cnagele> Right. I've been searching like crazy and the only thing I could find is that by turning off atime it will check on its own.

[06:56:27] <kdavy> hrm. define "pretty busy writes", first of all?
[06:56:47] <cnagele> sure, sec
[06:57:49] <cnagele> 24.0 1702.8 1252.1 2034.4
[06:58:21] <kdavy> doesnt tell me anything... i'd like to see a trend
[06:58:37] <kdavy> here's an interesting post http://osdir.com/ml/solaris.opensolaris.performance/2007-09/msg00026.html
[06:58:42] <cnagele> The reason I am looking into it so much is because the writes never slow down. This is odd because we are a read heavy system.
[07:00:16] <kdavy> well, if anything my advice to you would be to upgrade. but you're already doing that
[07:00:41] <kdavy> 3.0.5 just came out with a few important fixes
[07:01:48] <cnagele> Yeah, that is what we will migrate to. The problem is, this activity is causing problems during the day when activity is high.

[14:24:02] <wica> nahamu: Ubuntu does default nfsv4
[14:25:14] <nahamu> does 'domainname' return the same value on both client and server?
[14:26:05] <wica> Yep
[14:26:39] <nahamu> is that value also in your /etc/idmapd.conf on the client side?
[14:27:40] <wica> nahamu: No,
[14:27:51] <nahamu> that might be your problem
[14:28:00] <wica> looking in to it
[14:28:09] <nahamu> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NFSv4Howto
[14:29:40] <nahamu> that needs to be set correctly, /etc/default/nfs-common needs to have IDMAPD enabled, and you'll want to restart the nfs-common service
[14:30:04] <wica> Ps. nfsv3 on ubuntu I have that allready, because a other nfs server
[14:30:16] <Darkman_> wica: did you uncheck the anonymous options in the share and set the ip of the client as root/read-write?
[14:30:55] <Darkman_> oh, sorry, guess you don't use the nexentastore
[14:31:14] <nahamu> Also, root being allowed read-write isn't always desirable
[14:31:58] <wica> root rw is not desirable
[14:33:52] <nahamu> wica, is it working now?
[14:34:02] <wica> not reaaly
[14:34:05] <wica> 3 sec
[14:35:25] <wica> nahamu: Nop, I get only the correct uid and gid when I use nfsv3
[14:35:42] <nahamu> that still sounds like an idmapd problem
[14:35:46] <wica> Yep
[14:35:48] <nahamu> which steps did you take?
[14:37:49] <Darkman_> well, without root its hard to "manage" the share from the client, as you're not allowed to create any directory as root
[14:38:15] <Darkman_> thats why i mentioned ,)
[14:38:58] <wica> in /etc/default/nfs-common NEED_IDMAPD=yes
[14:39:13] <wica> in /etc/idmapd.conf set the correct domainname
[14:39:22] <wica> checked the domainname on the server and the client
[14:39:30] <wica> on the client restarted idmapd
[14:39:55] <wica> nfs-common service is no longer on ubuntu 11.04
[14:40:31] <nahamu> ah. but as long as you restarted idmapd that should be fine
[14:40:37] <wica> Yep
[14:40:46] <Darkman_> does the idmapd run? should be easy to check: ps auxwww | grep idmap
[14:40:52] <nahamu> perhaps try unmounting it and remounting it now that idmapd is restarted?
[14:41:00] <wica> is running\
