[14:17:07] <frankS2> Hi. I installed nexenta on two equal sized/manufacor disks under install. i get a syspool with those two drives. But if i detach one of those drives the system wont boot.

[15:22:46] <nahamu> frankS2: is it possible the system (BIOS) only knows to boot from one of them?
[15:23:21] <nahamu> experiment: detach the drive you detached before, but connect the drive you're leaving in to the same controller port that the pulled drive was connected to
[15:23:41] <nahamu> If that boots, then it's your BIOS boot configuration to blame
[15:31:01] <frankS2> nahamu: i tried that, i get "unknown partitions"

[15:37:22] <mota> I have installed, uninstalled, and re-installed the ntop plugin. I connect to myhost:3000 and nothing's there. I connect to myhost.mydomain.com:3000 - still nothing. Same for myhostip:3000. Nothing about ntop in the webgui. NMC has no options for configuring it.
[15:37:24] <mota> What am I missing?

[15:48:34] <mota> found it. setup network service ntop-server enable
[15:48:44] <nahamu> frankS2: so disconnecting either drive causes boot failure, but with both in it works?
[15:51:23] <frankS2> nahamu: correct
[15:51:29] <frankS2> with one of them its all black

[16:47:11] <frankS2> Thanks for your help

[16:52:19] <nahamu> frankS2: I've never heard of a max disks in a pool
[16:52:47] <frankS2> Its regarding performance
[16:52:49] <nahamu> My main pool is 2 6disk raidz2s, 1 spare, and 1 ssd cache...
[16:53:21] <frankS2> aha, i have mirror-0 2x2TB for syspool, and two pools with 5x2TB
[16:53:54] <nahamu> I could understand not wanting a pool with too many disks that has no redundancy
[16:54:04] <frankS2> raidz2
[16:54:07] <nahamu> a 9 disk pool of just 9 vdevs is just asking for data loss
[16:54:33] <frankS2> 10disks with raidz2 would go well im almost certain, but not sure about the perf. impact
[16:54:33] *** swy has left ##nexenta
[16:55:03] <nahamu> right the performance of a raidz vdev is the performance of the slowest drive
[16:55:20] <frankS2> mhm, same specs on all dricves
[16:55:22] *** swy has joined ##nexenta
[16:57:05] <frankS2> The ZFS man page recommends that RAIDZ vdevs not be more than 9 disks because you start losing reliability: More disks and not enough parity to go around.
[16:57:38] <nahamu> that too
[16:57:54] <nahamu> rebuild time is when your next drive is likely to fail

[17:08:01] <swy> considering putting nexenta on a retired server- 2 dual core Xenon 5130 2ghz, 8gig RAM, dual gig Ethernet. Thinking 8x 2TB drives, and my choice of an LSI 3704ELP or 3ware 9650 controller. Does this sound like sufficient hardware for a RAIDZ or RAIDZ2 setup?

[17:14:28] <kdavy_> swy, don't use a RAID controller, just get a plain HBA. LSI 9200 will work very well if your server has PCIe
[17:15:34] <swy> I'm 99% sure either controller could just pass through the drives, so nexenta could do all the ZFS parity goodness
[17:18:32] <kdavy_> swy, sure
[17:19:14] <kdavy_> as long as there is a driver. LSI 9200 is guaranteed to be supported - it is on Nexenta's HCL
[17:19:41] <swy> I see your point. I should check the hcl.

[17:39:14] <scastano> anyone know why I can see into child mounted directories?
[17:39:31] <scastano> I've got a ZFS volume called LocalDataPool-01
[17:39:57] <scastano> and a zfs filesystem LocalDataPool-01/VM-Primary shared over NFS to an ESX cluster
[17:40:35] <scastano> When I create "LocalDataPool-01/VM-Primary/QC" I can see it in ESX..... but when I go one more step down " LocalDataPool-01/VM-Primary/QC/VM1" I can't see the VM1 directory
[17:40:37] <scastano> any ideas?
[17:40:44] <scastano> is there a level restriction?
[17:44:44] *** andy_js has quit IRC
[17:49:11] <scastano> turns on from farther checking.... I can't see anything in the child
[17:49:31] <scastano> LocalDataPool-01/VM-Primary everything shows up fine, but anything I put in LocalDataPool-01/VM-Primary/QC isn't there
[17:49:49] <scastano> is there something I need to do on the zfs level to allow child file systems to be accessed like a folder?
[17:51:29] *** Tweener has quit IRC
[18:00:42] <frankS2> Hm, is there no rsync availibe in the repos for enxenta?
[18:04:40] <nahamu> scastano: might be an issue w/NFSv3?
[18:05:14] *** gdamore has joined ##nexenta
[18:05:20] <nahamu> I think I have the same problem when clients that don't support NFSv4 access hierarchies that have multiple ZFS filesystems in there
[18:06:07] <nahamu> switching the client to NFSv4 or explicitly mounting the subdirectory should work
[18:06:33] <nahamu> if NFSv4 isn't an option, you might want to (if you can) flatten the tree structure down to a single ZFS filesystem...

[18:10:55] <frankS2> running apt-get update fixed it ;)

[18:16:18] <scastano> yeah.... VMware only does NFSv3
[18:16:52] <scastano> and the reason I wanted to do this was to clone VM's at the file system level
[18:17:32] <scastano> create a 4 VM environment in its own subdirectory..... then snapshot and clone it to 10 more subdirectory's and simple reattach the new VM's
[18:17:39] <scastano> it would save a TON of time
