[02:22:39] <shaqfu> Hey
[02:22:56] <shaqfu> I'm interested in using Nexenta, as it seems to be the perfect OS for my needs, but I have a few questions before I really get into it
[02:24:37] <projectmoon> unfortunately, nexenta is not a sapient AI that will control your house yet
[02:24:41] <shaqfu> Aw :(
[02:26:07] <shaqfu> Anyway, I'm curious as to the possibility of running the OS off a CF card, and if so, if 2-4GB will be sufficient for the OS + smaller programs
[02:27:37] <shaqfu> And I'm wondering where to download a 64-bit version of Nexenta, since the download link on the page is labeled x86
[02:28:08] <shaqfu> And the one thing that people writing about ZFS harp at, is never running it with a 32-bit OS
[03:04:22] <shaqfu> Aw, no takers? :(

[03:32:06] <Teknix> you can run it off a cf card, and you might squeak by with 2-4GB, but you'll want at least 4GB so you can have a few boot instances
[03:32:43] <Teknix> the kernel will auto detect 32/64bit. The userland is primarily 32bit with a few exceptions. There has been no effort to make a fully 64bit userland
[03:33:14] <Teknix> you can run zfs with a 32bit system, but it's not optimal
[03:34:42] <Teknix> note that running an OS off the CF card will undoubtedly shorten its life span, unless you make sure that nothing is logged, no swap, etc.

[05:41:45] <shaqfu> Teknix: I'd likely mount it read-only once I'm done setting it up
[05:42:32] <shaqfu> And logs'll be written to a ramfs, and likely copied to the ZFS pool via a cron job

[06:07:28] <Onigiri> shaqfu: meh, it won't be a drastic shortening of a cf card life, what with wear leveling etc
[06:07:56] <Onigiri> It'll just seem faster, since you use more space up then say a digicam writing out a picture every so often.
[06:09:10] <shaqfu> Yeah
[06:09:40] <shaqfu> And I figure, I can just do a snapshot of the card once it's set up, and if it fails, pop in a new one and recover from that
[06:10:31] <shaqfu> But if I can avoid the hassle of replacing the card, I might as well
[06:12:39] <shaqfu> I'd just really like to use a card to save a 3.5" slot and reduce noise/power
