[01:14:47] <ep__> hello guys… a quick question to which googling didn't bring a clear answer…
[01:15:45] <ep__> are Nexenta packages compiled with gcc or suncc by default? I believe gcc, but I couldn't find a clear answer and I thought I'd ask before installing and apt-srcing :)
[01:36:36] <rootard> ep__: gcc
[01:37:05] *** ChanServ sets mode: -o rootard
[01:37:44] <rootard> if you want to recompile using suncc the Sun compiler suite is available in the repository (package: sunwspro)
[01:39:27] *** proteusguy has quit IRC
[01:41:21] <ep__> thanks.
[01:41:44] <ep__> i'm still in the process of figuring out if i want to do most of my testing on indiana or nexenta
[01:42:12] <ep__> and coming from a debian background / maintainership, the temptation to skip indiana and IPS is very strong
[01:45:24] <rootard> I'm a long time fan of Debian as well. I couldn't stand solaris packaging/patches and came here to stay :)
[01:45:47] <rootard> what kind of testing are you looking to do?
[01:46:49] <ep__> well, for now i'm just getting rid of my old linux install on my home server and rebuilding it with opensolaris + zfs
[01:47:08] <ep__> but i was doing a number of things with it… for instance, i had Asterisk running
[01:47:30] *** alfism has quit IRC
[01:47:30] <ep__> and it looks quite obvious to me that it would be way easier to go with nexenta rather than indiana for this kind of things
[01:48:26] <ep__> on the other hand, i want to evaluate how feasible it would be to use opensolaris to build servers (filers, pbx's, or other stuff) to deploy at customer locations
[01:49:04] <ep__> and i'm under the impression that currently nexenta is way easier to manage, but i don't know how many packages have been converted to build on the other opensolaris niceties, like SMF
[01:49:51] <ep__> and i'm afraid that nexenta could lag behind in the future
[01:50:47] <ep__> one thing i thought i could do right away, having installed indiana, was installing nexenta on a private BrandZ zone, but i haven't found up-to-date instructions and i think it can be done, but it will take me quite some time to figure it out, being a newbie

[02:02:56] <ep__> rootard: there's a Linux personality for BrandZ, but it can be done SunOS-on-SunOS… here's the old example: http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=5484&tstart=0
[02:03:29] <ep__> i'll give Nexenta a deeper look on Virtualbox, anyway; that will be definitely easiest :)
[02:03:44] <rootard> :)
[02:05:03] <rootard> If you are bent on running Nexenta under regular OpenSolaris in that fashion I'm sure I could whip up some instructions to install
[02:06:59] <ep__> i think i'll give it a spin myself too; exercise is good ;)
[02:09:00] <rootard> indeed

[08:34:16] <anilg> if yes, do you happen to have a snapshot..

[15:44:24] <domiel> rootard: I asked a question about Nexenta on PV Xen earlier today... you pointed me to a downloadable template for XS5
[15:45:19] <domiel> I'm actually running Xen on top of a standard Linux install not XenServer 5, so I pulled the kernel and ramdisk image out of the download you gave and have tried doing an install with those + the Nexenta CD image but it bombs out as soon as the kernel boots...
[15:45:31] <rootard> domiel: try adding -kdv to your kernel params. It should help to find the cause of the crash
[15:46:06] <rootard> type :c when you get a prompt
[15:47:06] <domiel> I assume you mean add it to the "extras" field in the xen.conf file (I'm using xm create .... to launch)
[15:48:37] <rootard> that sounds right
[15:49:12] <domiel> ok... I did that and it bombs right out, if I run xm dmesg afterwards I get an unhandled page fault
[15:49:14] <domiel> :-)
[15:49:28] <domiel> Oops... that was meant to be :-(
[15:50:45] <rootard> hmm... not sure where that would be coming from. Maybe Xen needs to be updated?
[15:51:48] <domiel> I would have guessed so but I was running CentOS 5.3 as dom0 earlier when I discovered that it was missing stuff so I've switched to OpenSUSE 11.1 and I'm getting the same error...
[15:51:57] <domiel> still you're probably right in any case
[15:59:27] <domiel> I'll try and update the kernel + xen, but please let me ask if you've ever attempted (and succeeded ?) in doing this on something other than XenEnterprise?
[16:00:04] <rootard> me personally... no. I've heard others say they have done it

[16:02:36] <rootard> That would be appreciated :)
[16:03:40] <domiel> btw. Do you have any idea of how that template was created or are you just hosting it
[16:04:44] <rootard> I am just mirroring it for speed/bandwidth considerations. I've given some pointers to people as they have come by in hopes of xen development...
[16:05:46] <rootard> things are progressing as people will add a tidbit here and there
[16:05:59] <domiel> as I'm sure you know, there are actually two templates archived there, I think one is just an older version, or are they different in some significant way?
[16:06:24] <rootard> one is newer and it contains some customizations for xen
[16:06:54] <rootard> I don't remember the details at this point :-/
[16:07:12] <domiel> ok... I was just curious :-)
[16:09:13] <rootard> I seem to recall the minimum xen version for OpenSolaris at 3.2.1
[16:10:08] <domiel> The funny thing is I've been able to easily install 2008.11 with no problems at all, it's something peculiar to Nexenta
