[10:02:51] <am11> would it make sense to act upon this cmake message which shows up if we try to use Illumos as CMAKE_SYSTEM_NAME (rather than SunOS): Platform/Illumos to use this system, please post your config file on discourse.cmake.org so it can be added to cmake.
[10:04:26] <am11> they also use uname -m etc. in their platform detection code, so perhaps we can ask them to classify Solaris from Illumos (in addition to existing abstract SunOS) via `uname -o 2>&1 | grep -q illumos`.

[11:08:12] <am11> sure, there is also another options for offical cmake set(ILLUMOS 1), so consumer can just do if(ILLUMOS) while keeping the if(CMAKE_SYSTEM_NAME STREQUAL SunOS) intact.

[21:36:53] <am11> something like apt-file for pkgin. :)
[21:36:59] <jbk> illumos doesn't have inotify
[21:37:02] <jbk> we have event ports
[21:37:19] <jbk> smartos (and omnioce) do have inotify for lx
[21:37:24] <jbk> but just use portfs
[21:39:21] <am11> ah right, in my smartos installation i have /usr/include/sys/inotify.h so the libraries build was happy. when i switched to sysroot, it is falling back to something else (haven't checked).

[21:59:35] <am11> for linux, filesystemwatcher dotnet library is using inotify under the hood. on macOS, it is CoreFoundation. for rest, it is a no-op currently. when we built on smartos, the build (incorrectly) picked up sys/inotify.h. we will need a separate implementation using event ports, and later (maybe) to support portfs we can enable both inotify and event ports on illumos and dynamically select the implementation.
[22:39:40] <am11> jbk: do you know which package is providing netpacket/packet.h header? i have it on smartos but not in sysroot.

[23:18:36] <LeftWing> SmartOS isn't assembled using the packaging metadata, just a large "manifest" file that lists what to include in the live image
[23:19:07] <LeftWing> https://github.com/joyent/illumos-joyent/blob/master/manifest
[23:21:01] <am11> LeftWing: thank you. the files which are listed there, are they available somewhere on the web (as a tarball perhaps)?
[23:21:20] <LeftWing> Are you saying you need extra files in the sysroot?
[23:21:26] <LeftWing> Because we can add more files
[23:23:43] <LeftWing> By the way, inotify isn't generally available in illumos as far as I know -- it was just in SmartOS for LX
[23:27:17] <am11> yes, i have fetched few packages from https://pkgsrc.joyent.com/packages/SmartOS/2020Q1/x86_64/All/, installed them in sysroot and compiled coreclr binaries in sysroot. then transferred the output directory to smartos and tested, it worked (had to only adjust the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include /opt/local/lib, because i think sysroot compilation didn't added that to the rpath).
[23:27:56] <am11> now i am compiling dotnet libraries (native components), which require netpacket/packet.h etc.
[23:29:21] <am11> if it is not availalbe in any smartos package, i can try to fetch BPF's p5i from OI's repo.
[23:30:19] <am11> would be nice if sysroot include them, but this has unblocked me so far. :)

[23:32:25] <am11> +1, thanks..
[23:32:50] <am11> i was searching in a wrong place.
[23:33:57] <jollyd> am11: a bit slow but if you do not have a system at hand and want to search for a file, go to http://pkg.openindiana.org/hipster/en/advanced_search.shtml , select Actions and validate, you'll get the list of packages providing the file.
[23:34:31] <jollyd> (and select the latest branch in the options)
[23:35:26] <jollyd> this returns the result of a "pkg search" (equivalent to apt-file search in APT)
[23:40:31] <jollyd> the server may timeout if the pkg repository is being reindexed though...

[23:42:04] <am11> thanks. so far i am using smartos packages for this stage-0 build. previously when was building dotnet binaries on the smartos machine (few days ago), i transferred the output binaries to OI and OmnniOS for testing, and they worked (after installing dependencies like icu). so i think stage0 (aka bootstrapped) binaries produced by the sysroot environment will also work in all distros alike. later we can use
[23:42:06] <am11> it to build distro specific packages, such that final package will have no file from cross-compilation in it.
