[12:49:11] <andy_js> I’m running the latest illumos. This is an illumos issue.
[12:49:38] <andyf> Ouch
[12:51:25] <Reinhilde> andy_js: first and foremost it's an omnios issue
[12:51:46] <Reinhilde> at least so it seems
[12:51:51] <andyf> Reinhilde, that's very unlikely
[12:51:56] <andy_js> No it’s an illumos issue. I’m not running illumos-omnios.
[12:52:00] <igork> andy_js: is it DEBUG build?
[12:52:10] <andy_js> Yes it is.
[12:52:18] <Reinhilde> ok
[12:52:44] <igork> andy_js: do you have one pool ?
[12:53:11] <igork> rpool on single drive or mirror?
[12:53:34] <igork> i see it is mount
[12:53:38] <andy_js> The rpool is a single drive.
[12:54:17] <igork> do you have original illumos or with your additional zfs updates?
[12:54:32] <andy_js> I think this is a symptom of the original problem that caused the reboot.
[12:54:48] <igork> fast reboot?
[12:54:54] <andy_js> This is illumos-gate which a could of changes to the SMB code.
[12:55:01] <andy_js> *with a couple
[12:56:06] <igork> well, i have no using illumos smb on dilos and have no this panic - can't confirm it. we are using external SAMBA 4.x
[12:56:33] <andy_js> I would be very surprised if it’s related to the SMB changes.
[12:57:13] <igork> i just can say that with ZoL updates i have no panic on dilos. probably you need investigate SMB updates
[12:59:23] <andy_js> The SMB changes were only minor changes to the credit handling code. I am 99.99999% sure they would have no bearing whatsoever on ZFS.
[12:59:34] <andy_js> I think it’s more likely a recent changes broke something.
[13:00:30] <andy_js> Here’s is where it’s blowing up: https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/blob/master/usr/src/uts/common/fs/zfs/zfs_znode.c#L861
[13:01:21] <igork> can someone try to test this simple script with encryption on illumos - https://paste.dilos.org/?1fb87a067b8f5ea4#EPRS/NdKeiONkFuIAuLpuHYwqQpGNvqwaSjU2riVjvM=
[13:01:27] <igork> and provide out put
[13:01:37] <igork> need separate vdev for additional pool
[13:02:08] <andy_js> What’s the problem it’s testing for?
[13:02:26] <igork> interest test on DEBUG and non DEBUG builds
[13:02:36] <igork> i can see panic on DEBUG build

[20:34:05] <jimklimov> finally made that dual-boot behavior VM from same disk and ESP
[20:35:03] <jimklimov> as my primary system there is OI, I set loader64.efi as default (copied into \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi) so VirtualBox EFI finds it and runs quickly
[20:35:29] <jimklimov> and in the OI VM that has passed-through the ESP and ZFS partitions, it boots OI
[20:36:04] <jimklimov> in the Debian VM, I pass the ESP and the Debian LVM2 partition (so ZFS partition is known, but considered all-zeroes)
[20:36:21] <jimklimov> loader64 fails, and EFI retries with startup.nsf after a timeout
[20:36:33] <jimklimov> nsh
[20:37:13] <jimklimov> and that one calls \EFI\debian\vmlinuz.efi initrd=\EFI\debian\initramfs ....
[20:37:54] <jimklimov> more complicated by use of dracut - had to hack into it to actually find LVM volumes, and then to actually mount, before trying to switch root
[20:38:04] <jimklimov> love ZFS even more now
[20:39:03] <jimklimov> but in the end, both VMs boot their OSes hands-off, from same ESP backed by same NVMe card

[20:39:29] <jimklimov> debian takes a hit of about 10 sec to begin booting (loader timeout after failure, and EFI timeout)
[20:39:38] <jimklimov> but otherwise okay
[20:40:41] <jimklimov> one more caveat though : when NVMe controller (and/or EFI? required to see it anyway) is used, the VM should not be "reset" or maybe even rebooted - the controller is not seen afterwards, scanning times out
[20:40:50] <jimklimov> poweroff+poweron are clumsy but functional
[20:42:26] <jimklimov> one more caveat, OI lacks a GNU cpio... and can't be used to edit linux initramfs which needs "cpio -H newc -d > ..."
[20:43:01] <jimklimov> also this header type is not default in linux cpio either which bit me on one iteration :P
[20:43:32] <jimklimov> otherwise, both accessing same ESP is super comfy (be careful to umount after tweaks before reboots)
