[04:01:06] <xanderlent> Hi folks, low-priority question: Is there any way to debug loader during very early boot? I'm investigating what I suspect is a bug in a hypervisor, namely that the FreeBSD/illumos loader appears to freeze instead of loading an OS.

[05:43:38] <AmyMalik> Wow, I just realised that if tech-unsavvy people actually used illumos, they'd be ripe for tech support scams due to the Microsoft level of complexity in SMF, which lends itself well to event viewer scams.
[05:44:41] <AmyMalik> I could have someone do 'pfexec svcs -a|less' at the terminal and tell them that all the 'offline' services are important for their system to work and that they're having a big problem if they are 'offline'

[07:18:19] <xanderlent> AmyMalik: The hypervisor is QEMU/HVF (QEMU using macOS's Hypervisor.framework). Non-Linux OSes present an interesting exercise for this codebase. IIRC it came to QEMU's mainline from the Android emulator codebase, and the Android people improved it from a startup's codebase (Veertu's VDHH). The startup has since pivoted, deleting the original repository, but the code lives on.
[07:21:55] <AmyMalik> xanderlent: No idea. I think you'd need to get a core file somehow but I have no idea how that'd work.

[07:48:09] <AmyMalik> Hmm?
[07:49:03] <despair86> something something microsoft-tier tech support scams on unix and linux users
[07:50:38] <despair86> also SMF is light-years better than systemd
[07:51:05] <tsoome> till you look into its source:D
[07:51:40] <tsoome> also svcs -a does not need pfexec nor sudo
[07:55:11] <tsoome> xanderlent: due to size limits it has no “debug mode”, so the printouts need to be enabled/added with build.
[07:56:12] <despair86> tsoome: is it just as bad?
[07:56:22] * despair86 is slightly scared
[07:57:27] <tsoome> not as bad, but bad in different ways:D

[07:59:25] <despair86> well that's a slight relief :D
[07:59:32] <tsoome> every software is created in its time and experience context, but in time people learn and those contextes do shift. if the software is not being updated, it will start to look worse and worse.

[09:37:53] <andyf> We really should update it to use at least sqlite *3*
[09:57:18] <andyf> AmyMalik - if you have services "offline", there is usually a reason. Most likely a dependency is disabled.
[09:57:44] <AmyMalik> andyf: Or that that service is not used for your use case.
[09:58:08] <AmyMalik> Which is more likely than a disabled dependency.
