[11:57:15] <jlevon> tsoome: so what's your thoughts on gcc9
[11:58:12] <tsoome> I think better diag is good. I am not really sure how much false positives there will be, however
[11:58:28] <tsoome> I have no idea about its code generation quality
[11:59:03] <tsoome> but at least for shadow, we should aim for it, IMO
[11:59:21] <jlevon> well in a sense that doesn't really matter too much. unless it's ridiculously bad, we kind of have to move up sooner or later :)
[11:59:29] <tsoome> + gcc8 cleanups are preparation and applicable for gcc 9 too.
[11:59:32] <jlevon> I'm hoping 7->9 is less of a nightmare
[11:59:48] <tsoome> s/and/are/
[11:59:51] <jlevon> you think it makes sense to skip 8? by the time things are ready?
[11:59:56] <tsoome> probably
[12:00:22] <tsoome> the gcc8 did add function signature checks (for visible “new” issue)
[12:00:36] <jlevon> right
[12:00:36] <tsoome> gcc 9 adds unaligned access checks
[12:00:43] <jlevon> urgh
[12:00:54] <jlevon> legion I imagine
[12:01:07] <tsoome> mostly about drivers
[12:01:26] * jlevon nods
[12:05:44] <tsoome> I think, we should aim for gcc9 and clang, and of course initially for shadow.
[12:08:03] <jlevon> clang is going to be tough
[12:08:40] <tsoome> I have not seen its log:)
[12:08:49] <tsoome> poke yuripv… :)
[12:08:50] <jlevon> just a guess I admit...
[12:09:19] <tsoome> I think the gcc 6-9 cleanups will make it less tough
[12:09:43] <jlevon> I'm more worried about the optimization stuff. who knows how many more nasty surprises await us
[12:09:44] <yuripv> heh, I must admit that I can't even get illumos-gate to build on omnios
[12:10:09] <tsoome> I would not hope to see it doing clean build on first pass:D
[12:10:11] <andyf> yuripv, it should be ok now that 11644 has been integrated
[12:10:35] <andyf> or you could switch back to OpenSSL 1.0 with `pkg set-mediator -V 1.0 openssl`
[12:10:53] <yuripv> andyf: yep, thank you, now I got the python (?) failures telling me "ImportError: No module named pkg"
[12:11:06] <yuripv> so it looks that I'm myself is a complete failure :D
[12:11:11] <andyf> You have the wrong python settings in the .env file - look at the samples here: https://downloads.omniosce.org/env/
[12:11:18] <yuripv> ok.
[12:11:23] <jlevon> it should also be correct on the illumos wiki still I hope.
[12:11:40] <andyf> export TOOLS_PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3.5
[12:11:40] <andyf> <-- should be enough
[12:12:12] <jlevon> andyf: what would it take to get you to pull those into the official gate along with something that'll switch as needed :)
[12:12:44] <andyf> I don't know what distribution the current defaults are supposed to suit.. I always thought it was OpenIndiana
[12:13:11] <jlevon> well OI has a similar problem of changing. I'm not sure offhand if it's right for current OI but I think not
[12:13:15] <andyf> We can trivially change TOOLS_PYTHON in Makefile.master and fix that particular default for OpenIndiana and OmniOS
[12:13:30] <andyf> but yes, doing something better would be good.
[12:13:31] <jlevon> please do it
[12:13:35] <andyf> There are the java settings too etc.
[12:13:39] <jlevon> yeah
[12:14:21] <andyf> On OmniOS, we say to build all python2 and python3 bits, but use python3 for running the tools.
[12:14:29] <andyf> On OI, they now skip building all of the py2 bits entirely
[12:14:49] <andyf> so we probably need to agree an approach..

[22:07:25] <tsoome> interesting. why I am now getting (on master branch):
[22:07:26] <tsoome> ../../common/io/usb/clients/usbser/usbser.c:1868:7: error: variable 'rval' set but not used [-Werror=unused-but-set-variable]
[22:07:27] <tsoome> int rval;
[22:07:27] <tsoome> ^~~~
[22:08:58] <tsoome> hm. ASSERT() is masking it.
[22:10:22] <tsoome> that assert is hurting me:(
[22:19:25] <jlevon> I experimented with an ASSERT that would still "use" its contents a while back. sort of got it working
