[03:12:09] <despair86> quick question: gnu cc+oracle as emits AMD_LZCNT hardware cap bit for Haswell or newer that subsume this cap in BMI1 and SSE 4.2, short of using an ldscript (which i do now), where would i patch the kernel to show that flag on haswell+?
[03:12:50] <despair86> *ldscript simply swaps the ABM flag (AMD_LZCNT) with the BMI1 flag in caps2
[03:18:55] * despair86 catches up on scrollback

[03:20:30] <despair86> hmm think at least of the BSDs use a 64-bit time_t even on 32-bit systems, might be something to look at with an interposer (like is done with stdio FILE streams)

[03:27:15] <LeftWing> One of the challenges with time is there's little if anything that can be done for existing 32 bit binaries.
[03:27:49] <despair86> or the converse: how far-reaching is any change to time_t anyway? Microsoft C has had __time64 since at least ~1999
[03:27:53] <LeftWing> They're just not going to work with times in the future, or if they do work, it'll be because they're pretending it's 1999
[03:29:30] <LeftWing> For software that you can recompile, it's probably just time to do so using the 64 bit ABI. For software you cannot recompile, there's really no great answer.
[03:31:59] <LeftWing> The time for doing a 64 bit time on the 32 bit ABI has probably passed, not least of which because we don't support or ship the 32 bit kernel anymore.

[22:55:55] <richlowe> LeftWing: 64bit time on 32bit ABI is kernel agnostic
[22:56:11] <richlowe> LeftWing: in exactly the same way largefile still matters to 32bit binaries
[22:56:21] <richlowe> the largetime proposal is in fact, literally largefile-for-time

[22:56:52] <richlowe> that being easier to implement quickly and correctly than literally checking every userland app is 64bit clean seems likely.
[22:57:30] <richlowe> though it's actually possible most of the uncleanliness you'd encounter would be time _anyway_..., so maybe you'd still be hoping for the same compiler complaints either way
[23:21:57] <richlowe> tsoome, rmustacc: I forget which of you is to blame, but are you going to fix acpi containing date stamps?

[23:54:49] <richlowe> the one in tree? 'dmake setup' will do it (it ends up called cscope-fast), the good modern one is packaged in at least OI and I think smartos
[23:54:55] <richlowe> the one in sun studio is horrid, don't use that one
[23:55:57] <richlowe> github.com/Openindiana/oi-userland/ would have the packaging/build info for how OI ship the good one.
[23:56:10] <richlowe> not sure of a good link to pkgsrc, but jperkin would know
