[02:03:02] <makruger> Solved my OpenIndiana as KVM guest kernel panic mystery.
[02:03:24] <makruger> This was on a Linux host mind you....
[02:03:40] <makruger> The culprit was the cpu feature named 'xsave'
[02:03:43] <patdk-lap> using what disk driver?
[02:04:04] <makruger> just an ide disk
[02:04:25] <makruger> Just the defaults....
[02:04:40] <patdk-lap> didn't know there was such a thing as *defaults*
[02:04:54] <makruger> what do you mean exactly by disk driver?
[02:05:40] <makruger> I created the machine using virt-manager and accepted the defaults

[14:09:18] <tsoome> In that sense studio team has all the reasons to be proud of IMO.
[14:13:49] <makruger> tsoome: I was finally able to get OI to boot as a KVM guest on a Linux host.

[14:19:06] <tsoome> but is able to go on.

[14:21:19] <tsoome> I havent checked lately if there is more recent one
[14:21:48] <makruger> where do I obtain this file?
[14:22:57] <tsoome> google:) tianocore.org has binaries for download
[14:23:46] <tsoome> note, you need 64bit one. I have no plans to build 32bit support:P
[14:27:11] <makruger> found it....thanks
[14:27:16] <tsoome> Oracle is certainly evil empire and whatnot, but they did good thing and did kill 32bit kernel, hopefully we can achieve the same:P
[14:27:47] <makruger> I personally don't have a use for 32 bit;-)
[14:28:01] <makruger> And I am not even a lawnmower:P
[14:29:42] <tsoome> most dont, but that topic has been risen few times and every time eventually someone has been popping up “but we still need 32bit” - so as usual, the issue has been pushed back into the drawer:D
[14:31:00] <tsoome> well, of course it’s really not the question of life and death, but would help to clean up.
[14:34:19] <patdk-lap> ya, there hasn't been any point for 32bit in the last 5years
[14:34:49] <patdk-lap> the only people still wanting to use 32bit, think, or actually do, use a crapload of pointers, and believe they get huge memory gains with 32bit
[14:34:58] <patdk-lap> sometimes it's true, but not most of the time
[14:37:10] <tsoome> its only question of time when the 64bit optimizations will render 32bit useless…
[14:38:39] <patdk-lap> that also, but I never really see that as justification
[14:38:50] <patdk-lap> normally it's just too painful to switch between 32bit and 64bit modes
[14:39:00] <patdk-lap> and everyone just complains about the memory overhead of 64bit
[14:59:33] <nbjoerg> ironically, there is a huge corelation between problems that would benefit from 32bit pointers and problems that don't fit into 32bit...
[15:00:27] <xenol> nbjoerg: :)

[16:21:57] <makruger> This works: kvm -cdrom ~/Downloads/OI_Loader_D6_Text_X86.iso
[16:22:33] <makruger> But this just dumps me to an UEFI shell and never loads the ISO: kvm -cdrom ~/Downloads/OI_Loader_D6_Text_X86.iso -bios ~/Downloads/OVMF-X64-r15214/OVMF.fd
[16:23:35] <tsoome> you need to set boot order - the uefi shell is probably before cdrom

[17:48:31] <tsoome> not exactly.
[17:48:41] * makruger thinking something might need to be copied to that small partition though.
[17:48:43] <tsoome> you need GPT partition table
[17:48:53] <patdk-lap> I don't like efi boot, you make a efi partition, just fat32
[17:48:59] <patdk-lap> and put the boot files in a folder
[17:49:03] <patdk-lap> seems so strange to me
[17:49:08] <tsoome> then you need system partition and usr partition
[17:49:18] <tsoome> usr for rpool
[17:49:47] <makruger> ok
[17:50:24] <makruger> what are you using to create the GPT partition table?
[17:50:42] <tsoome> I cant remember if I had zpool update on that demo, check if zpool create does have -B option
[17:52:18] <tsoome> and if it has -B and will take size argument;) if it does, you can do zpool create -B 32MB rpool disk
[17:54:42] <tsoome> this syntax is for wholedisk setup, so the disk name is without slice
[17:55:42] <makruger> ok...I'll try that
[17:56:45] <tsoome> or was it 34MB;) for smallest size of fat32;)
[17:57:48] <tsoome> it can be smaller, but not all systems like fat16/fat12.

[18:49:25] <patdk-lap> normally recommended 100mb
[18:49:41] <tsoome> yep
[18:51:34] <tsoome> actually even more, but the actual reasons behind that suggestions are not clear, most certainly its actually vendor specific and depends on how much other tools/apps/data is meant to be stored there.
[18:53:53] <tsoome> I can see how FAT implementation in firmware might not support fat12 or fat16 and only support fat32, but I fail to see any reason from firmware developer point of view to *require* insane amounts of unused space in file system reader;)
[18:54:29] <tsoome> but then again, the world is large and full of wonders;)
[18:56:50] <patdk-lap> heh? microsoft uses like 60mb on it to boot windows
[18:57:25] <tsoome> yes, thats exactly about os vendor requirements
[18:58:08] <tsoome> and not because they have tiny boot loader, but bunch of components stored and used from system partition
[18:59:11] <xenol> well, and it is certainly better to dedicate more space now than to deal with the issue later
[18:59:37] <tsoome> yes, definitely so if you are building for multiboot
[19:00:23] <xenol> and we are talking about hunders of megabytes, not thousands. You won't even realize you lost some space.
[19:00:39] <tsoome> that depends:)
[19:01:35] <xenol> well, when we consider servers, you won't realize that ;)
[19:01:37] <tsoome> those [embedded] systems with really small boot device…
[19:01:51] <xenol> you won't run illumos on those :P
[19:05:10] <tsoome> the current loader implementation has split architecture - boot1.efi (which is actually loaded from system partition) is 170k and loader.efi itself is 500k (and is loaded from root file system). So even 1MB is more than enough, even if you choose to have different versions around.
[19:08:16] <igork> well, we can boot server from pxe
[19:08:25] <igork> with full access to all disks later
[19:08:57] <igork> we can provide config file location on one drive
[19:09:06] <igork> smartos do it
[19:09:12] <tsoome> that too, but thats already quite specific config.
[19:09:32] <igork> yes - and we can provide another config location by pxe attribute
[19:09:57] <igork> also - we can do it by grub boot attribute
[19:10:17] <igork> or another loader
[19:10:32] <igork> no need store more files on boot partition
[19:10:37] <igork> you need only - just boot
[19:10:43] <igork> and operate with another config
[19:11:07] <igork> just boot - i mean: to be able mount root device
[19:11:22] <tsoome> well, there are different reasons why and how people build those systems.
[19:11:31] <igork> yes :)
[19:11:40] <igork> it just for example
[19:11:52] <igork> how to do mini boot
[19:12:10] <igork> like - embedded
[19:12:14] <tsoome> as with linux efishim, which is essentially “small” efi program with linux kernel as payload, so you have pretty large blob on your boot partition.
[19:12:47] <igork> what is efi benefit?
[19:12:50] <tsoome> or like microsoft is loading bunch of efi drivers before actually starting the kernel.
