[01:16:25] <pete___> hi
[01:16:54] <pete___> im new to haxe and I read alot online, but i wanted to hear your opinion about: what like game framework/engine you would recommend
[01:17:03] <pete___> i've heard haxeflixel or heaps is pretty good
[01:17:07] <pete___> or maybe haxepunk
[01:17:14] <pete___> and openfl and all that kind
[01:17:22] <pete___> what are your guys opinions?
[01:20:55] <ProPuke> I can only speak for openfl, which has been fine for simple 2d games. Font rendering tends to be a bit crappy, but other than that it's okay
[01:21:44] <pete___> okay nice
[01:21:47] <pete___> i will look into it
[01:21:55] <ProPuke> it's just a scenegraph, so you create and manipulate elements in the scene yourself. It doesn't really "manage" your game or anything, Just gives you graphical things you can manipulate
[01:22:12] <pete___> ah I see
[01:22:27] <ProPuke> if you want something a bit more managed, maybe with nicer handling of tilemaps and levels and stuff then I think haxeflixel and haxepunk offer more there

[01:23:13] <pete___> they are built on top of openfl right?
[01:23:25] <ProPuke> There's also Kha - which boasts being a very performant api, with 3d stuff, too
[01:23:35] <malublu> yes i use kha :)
[01:23:36] <ProPuke> flixel and punk are I think, yeah

[13:11:01] <Gama11> that's quite vague
[13:17:04] <Aurel300> @Gama11 Should I provide an example?
[13:17:38] <Gama11> that would be helpful
[13:18:34] <Aurel300> So I have (all of them static var) func1<T>(v:T) return T, func2 and func3 are the same.
[13:18:49] <Aurel300> return v*
[13:19:00] <Aurel300> they all do the same thing, but they have different names.
[13:19:10] <Aurel300> Then I have var a = func1
[13:19:29] <Aurel300> if (a == funcN) works as expected, only returns true for func1
[13:19:49] <Aurel300> I mean == returns true, you know what I mean.
[13:20:16] <Aurel300> But if I do switch (a){ case func1:, it immediately goes to that and the compiler complains about unused patterns.
[13:22:15] <Aurel300> Sorry, I should have just done this
[13:22:16] <Aurel300> http://try.haxe.org/#4054E
[13:24:38] <Gama11> check the generated code with the if-else chain commented out: http://try.haxe.org/#897C2
[13:24:46] <Gama11> it's optimized to console.log("switch func3");
[13:25:18] <Gama11> it probably just treats func3 in "case func3" as a capture variable
[13:25:36] <Aurel300> Hmm
[13:25:49] <Aurel300> but should it?
[13:26:14] <Aurel300> Ah, if I do Test.func3, it gives an error instead.
[13:26:27] <Gama11> I think that's expected, yeah..
[13:26:40] <Gama11> and yeah, you can't match on functions like that anyway
[13:27:02] <Aurel300> Why not? I don't wanna match the functionality
[13:27:13] <Aurel300> I wanna match the reference.
[13:28:25] <Aurel300> I suppose I can do case _ if (a == func1):
[13:28:50] <Aurel300> but then I might as well use the if-else chain.
[13:30:18] <Gama11> I'm surprised switch (func1) compiles actually
[13:31:29] <Aurel300> There's no pattern it can match though, is there?
[13:31:36] <Gama11> although I guess it only really errors on case patterns, like with "Only inline or read-only (default, never) fields can be used as a pattern"
[13:32:03] <Gama11> well, it did match your match-all capture variable :)

[13:33:26] <Aurel300> Hmm, I can do _.bind("asdf") => a: a()
[13:36:15] <Gama11> https://haxe.org/manual/type-system-resolution-order.html
[13:36:28] <Gama11> I think that explains why func3 was treated as a capture variables
[13:36:44] <Gama11> a capture variable is pretty much a local variable, which has priority over statics
[13:36:56] <Aurel300> Uh oh
[13:36:57] <Aurel300> http://try.haxe.org/#4054E
[13:38:10] <Aurel300> Yeah, using Test.func3 makes it explicit we don't want a capture variable and it gives the proper error.
[13:38:39] <Aurel300> But that snippet makes Haxe bind two arguments to a one-argument function.
[13:38:58] <Gama11> yeah, that's ... interesting
[13:39:35] <Aurel300> I thought it could potentially detect the arity of the capture function.
[13:40:07] <Gama11> works as expected here http://try.haxe.org/#5c0DA
[13:41:12] <Aurel300> Using T->T instead
[13:41:28] <Gama11> also errors here because of type inference http://try.haxe.org/#40F02
[13:42:05] <Aurel300> Using a:T like in my example does a runtime error "Error : Null Function Pointer" on cpp
[13:42:28] <Aurel300> And "Uncaught exception - Invalid field access : bind" on neko
[13:42:39] <Gama11> yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that crashed and burned on most targets
[13:42:57] <Aurel300> Similar story on php …
[13:43:04] <Aurel300> So it's just js?
[13:43:23] <Gama11> where it "works"?
[13:43:46] <Aurel300> Well … I guess haxe does actually use native javascript functions
[13:43:54] <Aurel300> and you can bind any number of arguments to them …
[13:44:58] <Aurel300> Oh, but no, it's confused. The first argument passed to the js bind should be the this context
[13:45:08] <Aurel300> so this one should have worked case _.bind("asdf") => a: trace(a());
[13:45:41] <Aurel300> to trace "asdf", but it traces nothing. "asdf" is bound to thisArg
[13:49:48] <Aurel300> http://try.haxe.org/#4054E
[13:49:54] <Aurel300> The js target is messed up.

[16:48:16] <demurgos> Hi
[16:49:30] <demurgos> Does someone here knows how to compile a simple OCaml program in the directory of Haxe's compiler. (I am trying to test the IO module used by the compiler)
[16:50:07] *** gunnbr <gunnbr!~textual@cpe-70-95-79-208.san.res.rr.com> has quit IRC (Client Quit)
[16:50:15] <demurgos> Basically, I would just want to use "open IO;;" to get the IO.ml module of the compiler (in libs/extlib)
[16:51:02] <Simn> ocamlopt your_file.ml
[16:51:23] <Simn> Plus whatever parameters are required to find the lib.
[16:51:24] <demurgos> ok, thank you, I'll try it
[16:51:40] <demurgos> (I was using ocamlc)
[16:53:45] <Simn> That should work too, just produces bytecode instead of executables.
[16:54:51] *** PSvils <PSvils!~PDevelope@88.135.146.138> has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving.)
[16:56:40] <demurgos> I read the man page for ocamlc but couldn't find the right option to import IO:
[16:56:43] <demurgos> $ ocamlopt -o testzlib libs/extlib/IO.cmx testzlib.ml File "testzlib.ml", line 1, characters 5-7: Error: Unbound module IO
[16:56:57] <demurgos> $ ocamlopt -o testzlib libs/extlib/IO.cmx testzlib.ml
[16:57:02] <demurgos> File "testzlib.ml", line 1, characters 5-7:
[16:57:06] <demurgos> Error: Unbound module IO
[16:58:07] <demurgos> I am at the root of the haxe repository, trying to import https://github.com/HaxeFoundation/ocamllibs/blob/master/extlib/IO.ml
[17:09:38] <Simn> You have to add -I libs/extlib
[17:10:11] <Simn> Check the makefile for reference
[17:13:15] <demurgos> Ok, thank you (I was checking the Makefile but I had some trouble finding what I need, now I see the different includes)
[17:14:42] <demurgos> It worked: thank you.
