[12:05:19] <roxlu> ngladitz: if I understand PIC/PIE correctly it's basically a way that a library can be loaded into an arbitrary memory location and it seems to be the default way to generate code by compilers.

[12:08:43] <GyrosGeier> position independent executables are fairly new still
[12:09:01] <GyrosGeier> e.g. on x86, all programs are loaded at 0x400000
[12:09:35] *** javashin <javashin!~javashin@unaffiliated/javashin> has joined #cmake
[12:09:36] <GyrosGeier> on pre-686 machines, PIC has a performance penalty of around 5%
[12:09:45] <roxlu> ah ok thanks GyrosGeier
[12:10:38] <roxlu> so maybe a stupid question ... but when all programs are loaded at 0x400000 won't that mean they use the same memory space?
[12:10:42] <GyrosGeier> because there are so few registers, so in order to make position-independent code, you always need to do stuff like "call 1f; 1: pop eax"
[12:10:54] <GyrosGeier> no, because memory space is per-process
[12:11:10] <GyrosGeier> basically, every program believes it's alone on the machine
[12:12:02] <GyrosGeier> and the MMU maps from process ("virtual") address space to physical memory
[12:12:15] <roxlu> ah I see, thanks
[12:13:56] *** borkr <borkr!~borkr@129-241-230-220-gw.cgn.ntnu.no> has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[12:14:52] <GyrosGeier> on 64-bit Intel, and on really any sane computer architecture invented after the 80ies, there is program counter relative addressing, so you can just measure the distance between the instruction reading the data, and the data itself, and get a fixed value regardless of where the program is in memory
[12:15:38] <GyrosGeier> but 32-bit Intel before the Pentium Pro expected programs to use absolute addresses or register plus offset
[12:16:39] <GyrosGeier> so PIC pretends to do a subroutine call, which saves the current address on the stack, then takes that address off the stack again so it is in a register, and then adds the distance to find the data
[12:17:14] <roxlu> Ok thanks for explaining!
[12:18:12] <roxlu> The libimage.a I'm linking against is not compiled with -fPIC if I'm correct and this post is the correct way of checking that https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1340402/how-can-i-tell-with-something-like-objdump-if-an-object-file-has-been-built-wi
[12:19:12] <roxlu> Therefore I set `set(CMAKE_POSITION_INDEPENDENT_CODE FALSE)` but still getting the same error
[12:19:20] <roxlu> I'm wondering why
[12:20:01] <roxlu> maybe I have to clean my build dir first
[12:20:36] <ngladitz> don't you want the opposite? or are you configuring the library?
[12:21:47] <ngladitz> ... never mind I got confused
[12:21:51] *** squirrel1 is now known as veverak
[12:22:11] <roxlu> Haha yeah no probs it's a bit confusing, but I can't change the libimage.a library which is NOT compiled with fPIC
[12:22:19] <ngladitz> you might have a library dependency that you inherit PIC as a requirement from
[12:22:58] <roxlu> yeah, I'm now recompiling and I noticed that many of my dependencies are using -fPIC
[12:23:05] <ngladitz> is there a shared libimage you could link instead?
[12:23:14] <ngladitz> afair e.g. Qt has a PIC requirement
[12:23:34] <roxlu> no
[12:23:48] <roxlu> yeah to me it seems a bit wierd too
[12:25:30] <roxlu> When I have libraries like A.a, B.a, C.a, and A and B are compiled with -fPIC, is it necessary that C uses -fPIC too?
[12:26:47] <ngladitz> all object files (including those contained in archives / static libraries) that are used to create a PIC/PIE linked object (executable / shared library) need to be compiled with PIC
[12:32:57] <roxlu> Ok. then when it's kinda standard to use PIC I find it strange that they have compiled libimage.a w/o ... right? I'll post a question on the github page for this project
[12:33:32] <GyrosGeier> mmh
[12:34:05] <GyrosGeier> basically the error message from the linker says "this object asks us to fill in the absolute address where it will be loaded, but we don't know that"
[12:34:06] <ngladitz> static libraries and executables with PIC are still rare / non-standard on some platform
[12:34:22] <GyrosGeier> yes
[12:34:36] <GyrosGeier> although loading PIC code at a fixed address works
[12:35:12] <roxlu> oh now I'm confused ^.^ ... the library -is- actually compiled with -fPIC
[12:35:31] <GyrosGeier> perhaps they have assembler code fragments
[12:36:15] <GyrosGeier> the linker doesn't care about how the library was compiled, only if it asks the linker to do something impossible
[12:36:35] <GyrosGeier> i.e. there is no flag in the objects "this was compiled with -fPIC"
[12:37:48] <roxlu> I was looking at this post: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1340402/how-can-i-tell-with-something-like-objdump-if-an-object-file-has-been-built-wi
[12:38:14] <roxlu> I'm getting some output when I run that on the object files of libimage.a
[12:38:34] <GyrosGeier> so if I compile "int add(int a, int b) { return a + b; }" there is a good chance that it can go into a shared library even if I don't use -fPIC
[12:39:43] <roxlu> Ok, yeah that SO also mentions that a library doesn't always contain code where -fPIC would matter
[12:40:02] <GyrosGeier> while if I compile "int a; void f() { asm("add 1, a"); }" that will end up as non-PIC even with -fPIC because the compiler can't look into the asm statement
[12:40:30] <roxlu> ah ok, got it. I'm not sure if they use assembler fragments (could be)
[12:40:48] <GyrosGeier> libimage sounds like some place where people would use asm fragments
[12:41:09] <roxlu> yeah exactly :)
[12:41:34] <roxlu> the error message I get seems to mean that I have to recompile libimage.a with -fPIE ... which I don't understand as -fPIE seems to be used for executables
[12:42:25] <GyrosGeier> same thing as PIC AFAIK
[12:42:48] <GyrosGeier> there are a few "levels" of position independent code on some platforms
[12:43:39] <roxlu> ok but if they are "similar" and I get some output using the SO command (readelf --relocs), meaning that the .a was compiled with -fPIC why would I also need to use -fPIE (unless they are not the same thing)
[12:43:43] <GyrosGeier> e.g. -fpic uses shorter branch instructions than -fPIC on some architectures
[12:44:07] <GyrosGeier> so -fpic is more efficient but fails if the library grows bigger than 16 MiB
[12:44:37] <roxlu> ok
[12:44:43] <GyrosGeier> IIRC -fPIE was added as an alias for -fPIC
[12:44:48] <roxlu> https://github.com/google/filament/blob/master/libs/image/CMakeLists.txt <- that's the cmake that was used to compile libimage btw
[12:46:06] <GyrosGeier> if you look at the output of gcc -dumpspecs, it doesn't mention -fPIE
[12:46:31] <GyrosGeier> while -fPIC seems to be implied if you use -pie on the command line
[12:47:19] <GyrosGeier> that would be my preferred method -- just pass -pie to all compiler steps, and have gcc resolve that, but I have no idea how cmake treats it
[12:48:05] <GyrosGeier> because -pie also takes care of linking the right startup code
[12:52:09] <roxlu> I'll try to build that library from source ... I rather don't but not sure what options I have

[16:16:14] <grumbel> K-ballo: It's to make it easier to keep multiple versions installed in parallel, e.g. make it easy to rename project foo to foo-0.1 so you can keep multiple versions around on Linux

[16:35:33] <ngladitz> maybe ... depends on the build system those external projects use and on if the environment variables are set during configuration and / or at build time

[16:44:11] <roxlu> ngladitz: ok thanks. I've got a very strange situation. when I build the library as external project I'm seeing strange issues when rendering (working on a graphics lib). But when I compile the lib manually (not as external project) it works w/o any issues.

[16:54:25] <K-ballo> people want a package manager
[17:03:52] <roxlu> it most cases ExternalProject is perfect, especially for cross platform development (win/mac/linux).
[17:04:12] <roxlu> I've been using it for many years and super happy with it.
[17:05:35] <Dakon> packagers usually go and unbundle it to be able to di better security updates
[17:07:00] <K-ballo> in my experience ExternalProject has hardly ever been perfect, cross platform development being one of the causes
[17:07:24] <K-ballo> like, forgetting to propagate CMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE
