[00:00:07] <rmustacc> There's lofs.
[00:00:34] <richlowe> if I recall, lofs is the most --bind-y thing.
[00:02:19] <jperkin> scarcry: yep, again that's something I use but not on smartos so haven't noticed yet ;)
[00:04:32] <scarcry> jperkin: so you'd be willing to enable smtp support in mutt then ?
[00:05:07] <scarcry> that'd be 2 for 2 then with irssi for today ;)
[00:05:43] <arai1> richlowe: exactly what I was hoping to find, any caveats for using lofs?
[00:05:45] <jperkin> yes, that should really be default in pkgsrc anyway
[00:05:57] <jperkin> given it doesn't add any dependencies
[00:06:19] *** tonyarkles has quit IRC
[00:06:27] <scarcry> yeah, otherwise only other option I can think of is installing msmtp and pointing that to my isp's smtp
[00:06:44] <scarcry> or configuring postfix to do it
[00:07:35] <jperkin> I'll enable header caching too, pulls in db4 but that's quite core anyway
[00:07:46] <jperkin> and it's pretty much mandatory for IMAP
[00:08:49] <jperkin> and sasl
[00:10:04] *** denizr has quit IRC
[00:10:10] <scarcry> jperkin: nice
[00:10:52] <jperkin> running now, multiarch takes about 2hrs
[00:11:49] <scarcry> jperkin: fantastic, once building is done, how long approx. before it shows up when running pkgin update ?
[00:12:13] <jperkin> same time, at the end of the bulk build it rsync's packages and updates pkg_summary
[00:12:30] <scarcry> good to know, thanks
[00:12:57] <jperkin> oh, update won't work as the package name will be the same, remove it and reinstall and you'll get the fixed pkg
[00:13:16] <jperkin> yes, that's not ideal, and I want to add a joyent-specific build number or so, but not done that yet
[00:17:23] <scarcry> ah, didn't realize that although the description on pkgin update seemed a bit fishy to me from pkgin(1)
[00:18:33] <jperkin> I mean an update of the package, not 'pkgin update' - you'll need to do that as normal
[00:19:45] <jperkin> so 'pkgin upgrade' won't update mutt as the version number is identical
[00:21:14] <scarcry> jperkin: never updated a pkgsrc package before, so one has to run 'pkgin update' && 'pkgin remove mutt' && 'pkgin in mutt' ?
[00:22:32] <jperkin> scarcry: yeh that should work
[00:22:54] <jperkin> in this particular case. normally you just need 'pkgin upgrade'
[00:23:25] <scarcry> ack, except that won't work as you have just explained
[00:23:37] <scarcry> love the support you guys are providing here

[19:52:31] * colstrom waves.
[19:54:08] <rmustacc> Hello
[19:56:23] <colstrom> So... I'm experiencing a bit of confusion with IPs again. I've managed to successfully network a KVM Guest running FreeBSD, which was the previous point I was stuck on.
[19:56:42] <colstrom> The point I'm at now is sorting out multiple IPs to a single VM.
[19:57:13] <colstrom> I think there's something I'm missing on the host configuration somewhere.
[19:57:23] <scarcry> nahamu: my 12.4 multiarch zone is showing renderproto-0.11.1 too
[19:58:32] <rmustacc> colstrom: Currently there is a one to one mapping between guest nic and guest ip.
[19:58:39] <colstrom> As an example, if I have two IPs, say 192.95.58.188 and 192.95.47.172. If I create two VMs with these IPs assigned in the JSON payload, and set up the appropriate networking in the guest OS, they work.
[19:58:56] <colstrom> But I can't seem to add a second IP to an existing KVM guest.
[19:58:57] <scarcry> nahamu: haven't set up a zone based on development preview yet (0.99.0)
[19:59:57] <colstrom> rmustacc: So is that to say that IP aliases (such as described here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/freebsd-how-to-setup-2-ip-address-on-one-nic.html ) would not work?
[20:00:06] <rmustacc> colstrom: So to make sure I understand correctly, if you set up a new KVM guest with two nics anone ip each, then everything works as you expect. But you can't take an already running one and add the second nic?
[20:00:34] <rmustacc> colstrom: Correct, we enable ip antispoof by default.
[20:01:03] <colstrom> rmustacc: To clarify, if I set up two guests, with one NIC each, and those two IPs to them, they work. I have not set up a secondary NIC for a single guest yet.
[20:01:21] <colstrom> Traditionally, I've done with with IP aliases, hence not configuring a second NIC.
[20:01:23] <rmustacc> So if vmadm doesn't know about the second ip, then the nic in question will never be able to send traffic out over it and we will drop it.
[20:01:29] <colstrom> Ah.
[20:01:33] <colstrom> So that's what I'm missing.
[20:01:45] <rmustacc> That is configurable though, it'll take a restart.
[20:01:46] <rmustacc> Of the guest.
[20:01:54] <colstrom> And that's a sensible design choice.
[20:01:58] <rmustacc> See nics.*.allow_ip_spoofing
[20:02:04] <rmustacc> Yeah, we do that with ips and mac addresses by default.
[20:02:36] <colstrom> rmustacc: I'm entirely fine with rigging up multiple NICs.
[20:02:50] <colstrom> The documentation I'm looking at is http://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Managing+NICs
[20:02:57] <rmustacc> You can just as easily disable the bit there if you want.
[20:02:58] <colstrom> Is that the correct reference?
[20:03:05] <rmustacc> Not sure off hand.
[20:03:16] <rmustacc> It's been a while since I've looked at the wiki since I've used the stuff long enough.
[20:03:20] * colstrom nods.
[20:03:45] <colstrom> Alright, so I'll go with the nics.*.allow_ip_spoofing change, to simplify things for now.
[20:04:02] <rmustacc> You don't need to do anything about the nic tag stuff it mentions or touch the gz config file.
[20:04:22] <rmustacc> Yeah, if you're not worried about that kind of thing, eg. it's for your own use, that's certainly the simplest way.
[20:04:37] <colstrom> "First, make it work. Then make it work well."
[20:04:44] <colstrom> Right now I'm still on the first part.
[20:04:45] <colstrom> ;p
[20:04:59] <rmustacc> I mean, if it's only ever for your use, the ip antispoof isn't as necessary.
[20:05:15] <rmustacc> We always use because we don't want tennants to be able to pretend to have a different mac / ip and try and mess things up.
[20:05:28] <colstrom> No, I do have multiple users in the guest environment, but they're all individuals I know, not randoms.
[20:05:59] <rmustacc> Okay.

[20:06:47] <colstrom> Alright, so going with a question that's possibly very ignorant, I'm not sure how to update the configuration of an existing VM.
[20:07:19] <rmustacc> vmadm update
[20:07:54] <colstrom> http://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Using+vmadm+to+manage+virtual+machines#Usingvmadmtomanagevirtualmachines-UpdatingaVM
[20:08:05] <rmustacc> Should be some examples of it in the manual page.
[20:08:46] <colstrom> So in this situation, I need to change nics[0] to allow_ip_spoofing = true.
[20:10:06] *** bens1 has quit IRC
[20:10:12] <colstrom> Can I just edit the original JSON spec, and vmadm update <UUID> < spec.json ?
[20:10:33] <rmustacc> No, I don't think so. update has its own syntax.
[20:10:55] <rmustacc> You want something like Example 10 in the manual page.
[20:11:26] * colstrom nods.
[20:20:51] <colstrom> So if there's only one NIC, I need to indicate which to update still, right? That's what the MAC property in that example is for?
[20:23:14] *** bsdguru has joined #smartos
[20:24:54] <colstrom> Awesome. The seems to be set properly now, according to vmadm get <UUID>
[20:25:03] <colstrom> Just need to test /etc/rc.conf
[20:25:14] <jperkin> nahamu: trunk has both available, so it depends on the dependencies
[20:57:37] <colstrom> Beautiful, I can connect to the KVM guest using multiple IPs now.
[20:57:45] <colstrom> Many thanks for the assistance, rmustacc.

[21:01:48] <scarcry> yesterday I installed 20130222T000747Z to a single disk and attached a 2nd disk later to convert the zones pool into a mirror. after the resilver completed zpool status shows the resilver to have taken no time (0h0m) .. https://gist.github.com/scarcry/5078019

[21:05:39] <trentster> Hi all, anyone know how to STOP "mDNSResponder:" messages from being logged by SmartOS?
[21:08:19] <scarcry> trentster: I'm seeing the same messages so am also interested to find out how
[21:11:17] <iyp> jperkin: Got a sec?
[21:12:11] <iyp> or anyone who can lend a hand for that matter. Looking for help with network configuration.
[21:13:30] <trentster> scarcry: yup apple devices on the network can make logs very messy in a hurry ;-)
[21:13:42] <trentster> iyp: whats the issue?
[21:14:16] <iyp> Can't seem to get routing straight on a node with mutiple NICs
[21:15:00] <iyp> There are 3 networks i'm trying to hit

[21:15:18] <trentster> iyp: yup,
[21:15:22] <iyp> I can only get the one that the default gateway is declared on
[21:15:28] <iyp> the other two I can't seem to talk over
[21:15:46] <iyp> playing with route and netstat, but I haven't gotten it straight
[21:15:57] <trentster> iyp: you got 3 phsical nics on the box? or you using vlans or what?
[21:16:00] <iyp> and when I do, not sure how to make it persist on reboots
[21:16:14] <trentster> have you set it up in /usbkey/config
[21:16:17] <trentster> ?
[21:16:27] <iyp> yeah. I have 3 blocks of variables
[21:16:38] <iyp> for admin, internal, and external
[21:16:46] <iyp> sec, I'll gist
[21:18:10] <trentster> scarcry: I think I found out how to disable fyi: " svcadm disable dns/multicast:default "
[21:20:34] <iyp> trentster: PM'd you
[21:22:00] <scarcry> trentster: looking into that service now, thanks
[21:23:09] <trentster> iyp: ok had a look, I have not played with vlan stuff much myself, but, quick questions, does sysinfo show all the networks, and are they all configured on diff mac addresses, or different physical nics, or you running the vlan and admin all off 1 nic?
[21:26:33] <iyp> all networks are on separate nic ports
[21:26:39] <iyp> sysinfo seems to have things straight

[23:28:40] <trentster> after plumbing an interface, and adding an ip, and adding it to /usbkey/config how to I add it to a vm without a server reboot.
[23:29:05] <trentster> I am getting "Invalid nic tag "backup" when I try add the backup nic tag to a vm.
[23:29:19] <rmustacc> Did you update sysinfo?
[23:29:33] <trentster> it does show in ifconfig -a and i have assigned an ip and its pingable from GZ, I also have added it to usbkey/config
[23:29:46] <rmustacc> A nic tag doesn't need to be plumbed or up at all.
[23:29:50] <trentster> rmustacc: nope, how do you update sysinfo?
[23:29:50] <rmustacc> It just needs to exist in sysinfo.
[23:29:56] <rmustacc> sysinfo -u iirc.
[23:30:09] <trentster> rmustacc: thanks
[23:30:47] <trentster> I will add that to the docs on the wiki..
