[13:37:52] <killfill> tomww: what are you trying to do? transform a running vm into a dataset, so you can clone it ?
[13:38:04] <killfill> you dont need a dataset server for that
[13:48:49] <tomww> yes, that VM is a regular install (windows 2008) with a VM created with json file. fifo sees that VM, can snapshot it.
[13:49:18] <tomww> wen it comes to image creation I can fill in the form, click in the icen for the snapshot. but then I can't see anything happen.
[13:49:48] <tomww> something to now: imgadm list imported datasets are not seen on the fifo side, but the dataset.at one I can see.
[13:50:20] <killfill> yup, fifo will not shows you what imgadm does.
[13:50:47] <killfill> thats correct, some time ago,the marriage on fifo and imagm broked.. :P
[13:51:06] <killfill> fifo uses zfs directly, bypassing imadm
[13:51:13] <tomww> oh, is it that I'm trying to do something that currently doesn't work?
[13:51:29] <MerlinDMC> wasn't there a thing to make backups + respin them on a different hypervisor?
[13:51:31] <tomww> so, we are open to other ways to clone a VM.
[13:51:52] <tomww> what would be a practical way to: snapshot the VM, clone the filesystems, setup the json / zone for that cloned VM ?
[13:52:02] <killfill> well forget about imgadm.. there should be 2 ways to do it, one via snapshotting, and the other via backup, as MerlinDMC tells.
[13:53:16] <tomww> okay. so that is something to work out, a small howto for snapshot, clone, use existing json file as template for a new vmadm create -f thenewvm.json
[13:53:38] <tomww> it was just confusing, as I though I did setup something wrong.
[13:54:09] <killfill> maybe trentster can help us with a howto.. :)
[13:54:33] <killfill> tomww: you gave problems to take a snapshot, or in the 'imaging' thingy
[13:54:39] <killfill> gave/have
[13:54:45] <tomww> snapshotting worked.
[13:55:08] <tomww> and I can see the zfs snapshots manually (only can't see the name I gave on the fifo side)
[13:55:26] <killfill> now snapshotting doesnt on my side.. :P
[13:55:37] <tomww> so I'm after a step guid, to document how to do this cloning
[13:56:15] <killfill> il give this a try on the evening.. dont have much time currently

[15:32:34] <tomww> Ah, which link should I read
[15:35:02] <Licenser> tomww update jingles
[15:36:38] <tomww> ahhh, okay. that is pkgin something, then pkgin install fifo-jingles and restart that service, I guess
[15:38:32] <Licenser> nothing to restart jingles is just static http/js
[15:38:34] <Licenser> html
[15:48:53] <tomww> I don't get the right ommand for upgrading. I need to pkgin remove fifo-jingles first, right?
[15:52:10] <tomww> Ahhhhh!!! wrote for a little moment in the lower right corner. creating image or something (was too quick)
[15:52:49] <tomww> and now 6.8% gzip/1
[15:53:02] <tomww> looks right, will report once it is done!
[15:53:44] <tomww> thanks much! I though I'm crazy, tried getting it "imaging" for too long :)
[15:54:10] <Licenser> tomww heh
[15:54:19] <Licenser> the gzip takes a long while
[15:54:27] <tomww> an the dataset page prints staus pendings, that makes me happy
[15:54:49] <tomww> yeah, but there is something you can watch like you watch a fish bowl
[15:55:25] <Licenser> for backups we backed down to gzip -1 so it's not tooo slow

[16:06:26] <tomww> and still takes out the "air", yes.
[16:07:21] <tomww> when was that discovered that the snapsho icon click while image create had no meaningful effect? right these days?
[16:08:19] <Licenser> tomww it was working last time I used it, no one really had reported it broken until you asked about it today :)
[16:10:14] <tomww> Ah, muchas gracias for fixing this that quickly!
[16:11:06] <tomww> it is perfectly timed, as I right now need to create two new VMs from the first one!
[16:13:32] <tomww> I had reinstalled from scratch (fifo zone, chunter), so one question if I could make an old zfs snapshot of that VM visible
[16:13:57] <tomww> again in fifo, to use it as source for the final image
[16:14:54] <tomww> (there are a number of snapshots remaining from the previous fifo install, and the running image has been altered in the meantime, so I need to use the previous snapshot)
[16:16:33] <Licenser> tomww nope you can't move existing snapshots into fifo sorry
[16:16:55] *** bixu has quit IRC
[16:17:02] <tomww> okay.
[16:18:46] <tomww> okay. I'll solve it then the other way. I would make a VM, remove the new disk (empty), clone the snapshot I want, clone it to the name of the empty disk,
[16:19:14] <tomww> then I can make a new snapshot in fifo from that vm and base the image on the new snapshot.
[16:19:50] <tomww> (well, if there is a hacker tips and tricks page, the above would fit in there)
[16:36:53] <Licenser> tomww the fifo page is a wiki :) if you think it's heklpful for other feel free to add it:)

[17:38:54] <tomww> hm, crating a VM from an image, is there any information which is mandatory to be filled in? I'm asking because hitting create is creating no action.
[17:52:38] <tomww> one more: If I create a network, then it says no Ip-rage assigned. If I assign one: select from the drop-dorn list, add that to the display. but I cant save that.
[17:56:57] <tomww> and re-visiting that network again prints no ip-range assigned.

[19:54:22] <bayoda> hi fifoianer
[19:54:47] <MerlinDMC> what?
[19:54:56] <vsv> Hello! With "fifoadm" utility we can get list of VM's, start, stop them etc. But how can we, for example, archive VM created by "FiFo" and send it to another hypervisor node? As I understand, we cannot use "vmadm" utility for manipulating VM's created by "FiFo"?
[19:55:21] <bayoda> anyone had problems with growing sniffle db ? i have 2* 13GB files inside in a directory
[19:56:27] <bayoda> my zone went down with out of space and utmpx error occurs
[19:56:37] <bayoda> fifo zone exactly
[19:56:43] <MerlinDMC> vsv, afaik there is a backup feature that sends the snapshot of the VM to leofs and you'll be able to spin that backup up somewhere else ... but trentster or Licenser should know better
[19:59:49] <Licenser> bayoda it are your images stored in FiFo, putting them in LeoFS is a solution to separeate that
[19:59:56] <Licenser> vsv you can do that over LeoFS
[20:00:06] <bayoda> what images are 13 GB?
[20:00:13] <bayoda> one of them
[20:00:14] <vsv> MerlinDMC, yes, I know about these. One more thing - where are stored, where we can find VM's created by "FiFo"? In zone assigned to "FiFo"?
[20:00:30] <Licenser> bayoda all your (images * 3) + overhead
[20:01:09] <bayoda> you mean dataset images
[20:01:25] <vsv> I mean - where they are on filesystem?
[20:04:24] <vsv> Licenser: can I do that from command line too?
[20:04:41] <Licenser> vsv yes the fifo python client supports that: man fifo
[20:05:02] <Licenser> or fifo --help
[20:06:52] <bayoda> Licencer - just one more question on this - i just have 4 datasets imported could they really consume 40GB or is there something else?
[20:07:25] <Licenser> bayoda not every delete causes the DB to be compressed and stuff actually deleted
[20:08:33] <bayoda> okay is it possible to compress the db manually - (no mather i have given 20gb more for the zfs)
