[13:33:42] <sehh> hey there. I've got a problem with failed delivery of emails. I'm sending to a domain that reports two MX servers, one of them down and not working. If postfix picks the broken server to deliver the email, it fails and the email is kept in the queue and re-tried. Now thats my problem, postfix keeps on re-trying the same broken server and eventually it bounces the email. How can I make postfix try the next/random MX server at the next queue delivery?
[13:35:26] <tuxick> broken or down? what is it?
[13:36:07] <sehh> I can't be sure, based on my testing, I think their are having connectivity issues
[13:36:22] <tuxick> uhm, how can you not be sure?
[13:36:30] <sehh> its not my server?
[13:36:59] <tuxick> then why do you say it's broken?
[13:37:43] <tuxick> unless you do your best to break postfix, it will deliver to secondary mx when primary is down
[13:37:56] <tuxick> so logic suggests the primary isn't down but broken
[13:38:20] <tuxick> so check logs :)
[13:46:29] <sehh> the logs show my postfix always re-trying one MX and never the other, I am not sure why, maybe its the MX priority? the broken MX server has priority 10, the healthy one has 20.
[13:48:20] <tuxick> figure out if it's broken or down
[13:49:22] <tuxick> it shouldn't be your problem
[13:52:54] <sehh> I can't do much from my side, postfix always reports the same error: Connection timed out. I tried telnet to their port 25 but I get the same thing. But I still don't see why that would cause postfix not to try the second MX server.

[19:32:58] <lunaphyte> indeed, you should never use a catchall. as far as the relayhost vs transport_maps question, yes, you're right. my preference is to use transport_maps
[19:33:50] <imcdona> The real problem is that I need emails sent from user at domain1 dot com sent to server x and emails from user2 at domain2 dot com sent to server y.
[19:34:15] <lunaphyte> that would definitely be a use for transport_maps
[19:34:33] <imcdona> So I've removed the relayhost parameter and am using "sender_dependent_relayhost_maps"
