[13:11:15] <nada> why below 4G ?
[13:11:39] <tomww> looks like your BIOS did do weird things with remapping the memory. like on windows.
[13:12:10] <tomww> if your bios has options what to do with the address space for the PCI slots, or somting similar, try switching around that. or a BIOS update eventually.
[13:12:52] <nada> yes i will check
[13:13:06] <nada> but my kernel i 64 bits ?
[13:13:13] <tomww> and if you have onboard graphics or otherwise reserved memory for grpahics, try reducing that to a lower number
[13:14:01] <nada> yes i will check because im home and computer is at work
[13:14:29] <nada> must reboot to see bios settings
[13:14:35] <tomww> looks like you run 64-bits. you can watch as well grep SunOS /var/adm/messages

[13:28:44] <ikarius> urk- hopefully someone has some ideas here. I just transferred a solaris 11 express system from dhcp to static IP (used sys-unconfig), and it now claims it cannot ping hosts on its local subnet
[13:29:25] <ikarius> I validated the netmask, the interface is plumbed, I validated output of netstat -nr, the interface is up, but it wont ping anything
[13:31:38] <tsoome> what you mean with "it wont ping" ?
[13:31:54] <ikarius> immediately comes back with network unreachable
[13:32:20] <ikarius> but, I see entry in netstat -nr showing the subnet having a route via igb0
[13:33:19] <ikarius> and when I say immediately, I mean no delay- it's not like it seems to send out packets and they eventually don't come back
[13:33:35] <tsoome> using names and name server is in different subnet? subnet mask on interface is wrong?
[13:34:14] <ikarius> not using names, just using IPs. host IP is 192.168.48.103, netmask 255.255.255.0
[13:35:12] <ikarius> I see entry in netstat -nr output for "192.168.48.0" going out igb0, and ping 192.168.48.240, and immediately get error "network unreachable"
[13:35:21] <lblume> Can we still have a look at ifconfig -a and netstat -rn?
[13:36:02] <ikarius> unfortunately, not, as the machine isn't able to talk to the network in any fashion
[13:36:23] <ikarius> I validated netmask of 255.255.255.0 on the ifconfig igb0 output
[13:36:29] <ikarius> it's also up, running state
[13:37:15] <ikarius> I'm hoping you can point me at anything else to look for on the system
[13:37:31] <lblume> ipfilter maybe?
[13:37:42] <ikarius> because from the extent of my knowledge, everything should be working
[13:38:02] <ikarius> hummm. ipfilter = firewall?
[13:38:06] <lblume> yep
[13:38:17] <ikarius> is it enabled by default?
[13:38:17] <lblume> It has an SMF service you can easily take down to check
[13:38:23] <lblume> I think it is nowadays.
[13:38:33] <ikarius> sonofabitch. that's probably it.
[13:38:56] <ikarius> I assume that nwam probably has the magic to fixup ipfilter rules?
[13:39:18] <ikarius> if using the nwam service?
[13:39:31] <ikarius> anything else for me to check?
[13:40:10] <lblume> Not that I think of atm :-)
[13:40:58] <lblume> Maybe have a look at the nic with dladm, not sure if it can show more. And well, the basics: is the cable plugged in? :-P Run arp -a and snoop
[13:42:01] <ikarius> yep, cable is plugged in
[13:42:24] <lblume> arp and snoop to check if traffic reaches the card then
[13:42:42] <ikarius> system was talking to the network just fine with nwam and a dhcp IP
[13:43:36] <ikarius> I transitioned it to network/physical:default manually, it did the same thing, so I did sys-unconfig, had THAT set up the static IP, still no love, so I came looking for help
[13:44:16] <ikarius> ahh yes, arp. I'll look at the man page on snoop.

[18:06:40] <melbogia> so I have "true 2>&1 | mailx -s subject -r to@address root" in cron, however now I get blank message if there is no output from the script
[18:09:27] <tsoome> maybe you wanna do cat /bin/true ?;)
[18:10:01] <tsoome> hm, oh its binary in s11
[18:10:52] <tsoome> true has exit status 0; false always will exit with a non-zero value. no output.
[18:11:54] <lblume> ah, yeah, one issue with that is unlike cron, if there is absolutely no output, you get a blank email. cron sends no email if there is no output at all
[18:12:24] <lblume> So then, the next step is to handle that cleanly in a script rather than doing overly long lines in the crontab anyway :-)

[18:13:12] <melbogia> how do i make a script with no output? 0 is no output, no?

[18:17:56] *** niq has quit IRC
[18:18:47] <lblume> Depends what you mean, but probably not. That would be a bit pointless to redirect /dev/null to an email
[18:19:27] <melbogia> shouldn't that redirect stderr to pipe and stdout to /dev/null?
[18:19:34] <melbogia> which is what I need
[18:19:56] <lblume> I thought you wanted an email?
[18:20:06] <melbogia> only if there is stderr
[18:20:34] <lblume> the problem with that is mailx will *always* send an email, even if there is not
[18:20:48] <melbogia> yea, you are right. I am still getting mail
[18:20:48] <lblume> So it needs more complex handling inside the script
[18:21:21] <lblume> Basically redirect output to tempfile, if tempfile not empty, email it.
