[01:16:46] <Jefe> Hey all, I want to install Nagios plugins and nrpe on my hipster install. I have had no luck so far finding these packaged. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
[01:23:42] <Jefe> Also, I have built many RPMs for RH-family Linux, which always starts with something called a spec file. So, I found this project called Spec File Extras. Does this mean building an IPS is like building an RPM and I can just write the same kind of spec file to build it?
[01:29:39] <alanc> it means someone wrote a perl script to process RPM-style spec files and use them to build IPS packages - it's a wrapper around IPS, not the native IPS way to build a package
[01:30:17] <alanc> pkgbuild is the name of the perl script - http://pkgbuild.sourceforge.net/
[01:30:25] <Jefe> Heh, someone wrote a Perl script to parse something that was already parsed by Python. Hmmm....
[01:31:22] <Jefe> None the less, it must make it pretty easy to take RPM specs and build IPSes out of them.
[01:32:50] <alanc> that was the goal - it turns out to be harder than they hoped since you still need to do work to most packages to get them to build & install properly on Solaris, can't just use most Linux spec files as-is

[13:33:20] <tomww> Jefe: the syntax of the spec-fles-extra files is really close to the RPM syantax, but building on Solaris-Style OS partially needs porting work.
[13:34:35] <AmyMalik> I call it "solaroid"
[13:34:44] <tomww> Jefe: if you already have a linux RPM spec file, then it is relatively easy to a) ports the spec file and b) needs some porting to get it right on Solaris/Openindiana/OmniOS
[13:38:10] <tomww> Jefe: and yes, the project spec-files-extra uses "pkgtool" to compile and package for IPS.

[19:45:11] <Jefe> This is frustrating... I updated my system, it said I need to reboot to the new BE. Now it is just hung, with this on the console: https://pastebin.com/rmcgw9Wt
[19:46:17] <Jefe> The OpenIndiana node is a Xen domU (hvm mode) running on a CentOS 6 dom0. More details on request.
[19:46:58] <Jefe> Sorry, s/hvm/pvm/.
[19:51:16] <toasterson> Jefe (IRC): ah yes console login services depend on ldap let it settle for 20min
[19:51:39] <Jefe> I think it's been about an hour.
[19:52:49] <toasterson> hrmm then the ldap config got deleted accidentally had that happen before aswell.
[19:53:31] <toasterson> reboot to the old be mount the new be and use svcadm -z inside the new be to disable the ldap client service
[19:58:37] <Jefe> Most of the commented lines were used during install. Here's the xlconf for the the domU. https://pastebin.com/VMTEvWxs
[20:00:58] <Jefe> I had to directly call the kernel and ramdisk from the local filesystem because pygrub couldn't read ZFS. But that was something I did on an old install and I don't remember if I had the same problem upgrading to Xen 4 or was just lazy and left it that way.
[20:01:28] <Jefe> Anyway, I need to go to lunch right now. I'll be back in an hour or so.
[20:12:46] <tomww> Jefe: yes the web pages on sourceforge don't get muh attention these days. volunteers time goes into spec files and automatic builds these days.

[21:28:29] <mnowak_> I am surprised that OI can be installed and booted on Xen (in whatever mode)
[21:41:59] <Jefe> mnowak_, Solaris and OpenSolaris supported Xen. I see no reason why that support should ever be removed; it's not hurting anything. So yeah, OpenIndiana does support Xen, but I think maybe I screwed up by not matching the kernel I'm booting to the BE I'm trying to get into.
[21:42:42] *** melliott <melliott!~melliott@speed.ncsa.illinois.edu> has joined #openindiana
[21:47:13] <toasterson> Jefe (IRC): the error is from the ldap service after kernel has booted as said before.

[21:50:05] <Jefe> I really don't think it's an LDAP issue. Why wouldn't the rest of the system come up? I can't even ping it.
[21:58:59] <Jefe> Alright, how do I reboot into the previous BE from my Xen config?
[21:59:40] <Jefe> extra = "/platform/i86xpv/kernel/amd64/unix -B zfs-bootfs=rpool/ROOT/openindiana,bootpath='/xpvd/xdf@51712:a'"
[22:00:40] <Jefe> That's currently in my config. I /believe/ it's already pointing to the original BE. Maybe I should update that line and point it to rpool/ROOT/openindiana-2?
[22:00:56] <Jefe> Which would be the new BE from the upgrade I did.
[22:05:01] <tsoome> rpool/ROOT/openindiana does not “feel” like new from upgrade, unless you did name it so
[22:05:16] <Jefe> No, that's hard coded into my Xen config.
[22:05:19] <tsoome> the be name is last part of that triplet
[22:05:27] <Jefe> So I can change it, if that's the right thing to do.
[22:05:41] <Jefe> Ok, so I'll rename it and see what happens.
[22:06:04] <tsoome> you can do beadm list
[22:06:30] <Jefe> I can't do beadm anything, I can't get to a shell, the VM won't finish booting.
[22:06:37] <tsoome> or zfs list and check out the rpool/ROOT direct children
[22:06:44] <tsoome> ah.
[22:06:51] <Jefe> But I looked at beadm list before I rebooted and I know what the list looks like.
[22:06:57] <tsoome> xen guest?
[22:07:01] <Jefe> Yes.
[22:07:04] <Jefe> domU.
[22:07:09] <Jefe> https://pastebin.com/VMTEvWxs
[22:11:43] <toasterson> Jefe (IRC): because of dependencies. I have had that same thin happen. you can mount the be and touch /var/ldap/ldap_client_file as an empty file or copy your current one.
[22:12:21] <Jefe> I suppose I could try to boot from the install CD again.
[22:25:52] <tsoome> what console you have for guest?
[22:29:07] <Jefe> I think it just attaches to a virtual-serial console
[22:29:26] <mnowak_> Jefe, there are numerous issues with illumos on newer Xen. Xen guest code in illumos didn't have much attention in the last 10 years I am afraid
