[03:25:32] * ball kicks off another Hipster download.
[03:41:56] <panorain> Hello
[03:42:50] <panorain> Do some think that in open source openindiana is the closest 'open' distribution similar to Solaris?
[03:43:32] *** amcclure <amcclure!~amcclure@thunix.net> has left #openindiana ("WeeChat 2.4")
[03:43:44] <ball> Probably.
[03:44:05] <panorain> ball: Thank you for your response.
[03:47:14] <ball> panorain: It's an interesting question. What prompted it?
[03:49:35] <panorain> ball: It kindof all started here for me with thinking or seeing some of the older sun desktops and stuff.
[03:50:10] <panorain> ball: Then I read just a bit and even bought an old second hand book Solaris 4/5.
[03:51:30] <panorain> then I learned that opensolaris is no longer really being supported by developers.
[03:51:40] <panorain> I am not a developer though by any means.
[03:52:36] <ball> Some of the older Sun desktops ran SunOS, which was a BSD. Solaris 2.x onwards was based on System V. OpenIndiana would be much newer than either of those and probably has its own hardware requirements.
[03:53:31] <ball> It's probably fair to say that OpenIndiana grew out of OpenSolaris, though today it's based (I think) on Illumos.
[03:54:01] <panorain> ball: Are some of the commands and such in the Solaris 4/5 book I bought possibly a bit relevant moreso with a more mainstream GNU/Linux distribution in todays market/world?
[03:55:30] <ball> I don't know Solaris or Linux, so I'm the wrong person to ask.
[03:56:49] <ball> Well, I know Linux well enough to install it for my daughter.
[03:59:26] <panorain> ball: Thanks for you chatting about it.
[04:00:32] <ball> That's what IRC is for. ;-)
[04:00:45] <panorain> ball: :]
[04:09:09] <ball> Apparently I have eight hours left for my OpenIndiana download to finish.
[04:10:28] <panorain> ball: Is the download similar to for instance 'openSUSE' being 3.6gig? I can look it up no need to ask more question <---- panorain thinking to himself as types this.
[04:10:59] <ball> No, I think it's closer to half that.
[04:11:19] <ball> I have a slow Internet connection and my wife is watching Netflix in the front room.
[04:12:22] <panorain> ball: I had seen that openindiana does have literature as far as a book for sale. I instantly wondered about that when I had spent a small amount of time looking on the openindiana website.
[04:12:31] <panorain> ball: ok
[04:12:46] <ball> That's good to know. When I first looked at it I don't think they had a book.
[04:12:56] <panorain> ball: What caused you to have interest in openindiana initially?
[04:15:29] <ball> I used SunOS years ago (around the time that Solaris 2 was released). Sun Microsystems built some beautiful gear over the years and their software had some nice features. I kept an eye on them until they were eaten by Oracle and downloaded OpenSolaris when that was released (before it was a bootable system, I think) and OpenIndiana later, mostly to try it out.
[04:17:14] <panorain> ball: cool
[04:17:48] <ball> I should /probably/ wait until I have a spare server on which to try it but I have a spare desktop PC that I've cobbled together from parts and that's an opportunity to have another look.
[04:18:27] <panorain> ball: :]
[04:23:42] <panorain> The situation I guess in a very minor way for me is I have a couple i386 computers that no longer are able to run the newer 64bit operating distributions.
[04:25:27] <panorain> So, yeah I am able to sortof cobble things together and hopefully donate to family/friends. In all reality it's really not difficult to find a lower end 64 bit computer second hand these days. I understand that except I have been so 'cheap' with spending money on hardware. I like to try to use everything I come across.
[04:26:38] <ball> I /think/ OpenIndiana requires an amd64-compatible processor. I know of something that still runs on i386 though, if that helps.
[04:27:01] <panorain> ball: Nah I know that much. :]
[04:28:03] <ball> If it helps, the machine I built this week has an Intel Atom 330 (weak dual-core, 64-bit), 2 GB RAM and 2 TB disk.
[04:28:07] <ball> (SATA)
[04:28:18] <ball> ...think the motherboard's probably ten years old.
[04:28:54] <ball> I'd contemplated buying a J5005 board but this was almost free (bought a new case w/ PSU)
[04:30:15] <panorain> ball: That's cool to me that others think SunOS did in fact create cool operating systems. I really have never been one to condemn having to pay a support fee. Which of course is a contribution in the 'opensource' OS world.
[04:31:20] <panorain> ball: it sounds like you have a fairly good grasp on how to get the openindiana distribution operating and functioning.
[04:31:56] <ball> I wouldn't claim that. I've had it bootable a couple of times.
[04:32:01] <panorain> ball: I'm sortof a noob really I have had no formal education with computers myself.
[04:32:07] <ball> ...it's possible I just got lucky.
[04:32:13] <panorain> cool
[04:32:21] <ball> ISTR the installer's pretty friendly though.
[04:32:56] <panorain> ball: This is good to know.
[04:33:26] <ball> panorain: If you're sticking around for an hour or two, we might find out whether I still have the knack.
[04:33:29] <panorain> ball: Have you ever asked a question or whatever in the openindiana forums?
[04:33:41] <ball> panorain: I don't think so.
[04:33:43] <panorain> ball: Yeah no problem.
[04:33:45] <ball> Just in here.
[04:33:54] <panorain> ball: Fair enough.
[04:34:22] <panorain> ball: It's nice to be here actually.
[04:34:58] * ball nods
[04:35:11] <ball> I have found the people in here to be friendly and informative.
[04:36:17] <panorain> ball: I sortof cobbled together an old Gateway i386 2.5 gigs ddr1 80 gig hd with Linux Mint 19.1 and connected a Vizio 32" tv to it. Got the resolution corrected. So yeah I definitely have interest in the 'openindiana' operating system.
[04:37:12] <ball> That might go faster with the 2G than with 2.5G
[04:37:59] <panorain> I just have to take all this learning in 'stride' and not get overwhelmed so easily sometimes. I have an older Solaris 10 DVD/CD except I never gave it a real chance and now from what I have learned. ----> opensolaris not supported etc etc. I wanted to get others opinions and such.
[04:38:20] <ball> If it's truly i386, you could consider NetBSD/i386 (ask in #netbsd)
[04:38:35] <panorain> ball: cause having 2 1 gig and 2 256 chips on the board you mean?
[04:38:46] <panorain> ball swaps never really used tho.
[04:39:14] <panorain> ball: cool i'll join that channel now and thank you again.
[04:39:18] * ball nods
