[03:33:49] <Roybent> Indo-European migrations were the migrations of pastoral peoples speaking the Proto-Indo-European language (PIE), who departed from the Yamnaya and related cultures in the Pontic–Caspian steppe, starting at c. 4000 BCE. Their descendants spread throughout Europe and parts of Asia, forming new cultures with the people they met on their way, including the Corded Ware culture in Northern Europe and the Vedic culture in the Indian subcontinent. These
[03:33:50] <Roybent> migrations ultimately seeded the cultures and languages of most of Europe, Greater Iran, and much of the Indian subcontinent.
[03:33:50] <Roybent> Global exploration started with the Portuguese discoveries of the Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, the coast of Africa, and the discovery of the sea route to India in 1498; and, on behalf of the Crown of Castile (Spain), the trans-Atlantic Voyages of Christopher Columbus between 1492 and 1502, and the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1519–1522. These discoveries led to numerous naval expeditions across the Atlantic, Indian and
[03:33:50] <Roybent> Pacific oceans, and land expeditions in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia that continued into the late 19th century, and ended with the exploration of the polar regions in the 20th century.
[03:34:23] <Roybent> Over thousands of years of human migrations and the rise of ancient civilizations, seafaring exploration led to ocean trade routes. The earliest known reference to an organization devoted to ships in ancient India is to the Mauryan Empire from the 4th century BC. It is believed that navigation as a science originated on the Indus river some 5000 years ago.
[03:34:23] <Roybent> In the early modern period, successor states of the Adal and Ajuran empires began to flourish in Somalia, continuing the tradition of seaborne trade established by previous Somali empires.
[03:34:23] <Roybent> The world's first dock at Lothal (2400 BCE) was located away from the main current to avoid deposition of silt.[16] Modern oceanographers have observed that the Harappans must have possessed great knowledge relating to tides in order to build such a dock on the ever-shifting course of the Sabarmati, as well as exemplary hydrography and maritime engineering.[16] This was the earliest known dock found in the world, equipped to berth and service
[03:34:23] <Roybent> ships.[16] It is speculated that Lothal engineers studied tidal movements, and their effects on brick-built structures, since the walls are of kiln-burnt bricks.[17] This knowledge also enabled them to select Lothal's location in the first place, as the Gulf of Khambhat has the highest tidal amplitude and ships can be sluiced through flow tides in the river estuary.
[03:34:41] <Roybent> Pirogues in the United States is associated particularly with the Cajuns of the Louisiana marsh. The early Cajun pirogues were cypress dugouts but today they are usually flat-bottomed boats. Pirogues are not usually intended for overnight travel but are light and small enough to be easily taken onto land. The design also allows the pirogue to move through the very shallow water of marshes and be easily turned over to drain any water that may get into
[03:34:41] <Roybent> the boat. A pirogue has "hard chines" which means that instead of a smooth curve from the gunwales to the keel, there is often a flat bottom which meets the plane of the side.
[03:34:41] <Roybent> Indígenas or pueblos indígenas ("indigenous peoples") is a common term in Spanish-speaking countries, and pueblos nativos or nativos (lit. "native peoples") may also be heard, while aborigen (aborigine) is used in Argentina, and pueblos aborígenes (aboriginal peoples) is common in Chile.

[20:32:31] <bluesfreak72> Hi there. I just found the openindiana page and downloaded the 64 bit x86 iso and usb files. I'm in Linux Mint 18.3 and have tried dd to write the usb file and k3b to burn the iso. The usb on my thumb drive didn't boot, and the iso gave an error during the burn process. What am I not doing right here?
[20:33:48] <bluesfreak72> The burning error came at 97%. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
[20:40:57] <wacki> Welcome bluesfreak72!
[20:41:46] <bluesfreak72> wacki: Hi! I went into the wiki and found I could use wodim.
[20:42:08] <wacki> The ISO is 664MB in size. Are you sure you have used a medium that is able to take 664 MB? Maybe you'll need a bigger one.
[20:43:42] <bluesfreak72> wacki: Maybe I should try putting it on a CD rather than a DVD. Maybe that's why it puked on me.
[20:45:03] <wacki> I can't help you under Linux as I don't use it (at least not on the desktop). I usually burn my ISOs with Etcher. I only used it on MacOS and Windows but It should be available for Linux, too.
[20:45:58] <wacki> Maybe, I only used CDRs (700 MB) for it.
[20:46:31] <bluesfreak72> Wodim didn't error out. I'm going to try booting it. Hopefully the next time I hop in here I'll be installed and running. I totally forgot to look at size. If the DVD doesn't work, I'll try a CD.
[20:47:03] <bluesfreak72> I'll be back if you're going to be around for a bit.
