[10:49:03] <fosterdv> I was looking through the documentation and found this. https://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/napp-it,+ready+to+use+NAS+SAN+storage+server+with+WEB-GUI
[10:49:36] <fosterdv> Is there documentation on how to troubleshoot issues around kernel panics preventing it from startring up?
[10:57:20] <fosterdv> Openindiana with napp-it is what I'm experiencing issues with getting started. The 3 options I have are "pre_napp-it-0.9b3, openindiana-backup-1, and napp-it-0.9b3". I can get a prompt for both "pre_napp-it-0.9b3, openindiana-backup-1", and the kernel panic is when I try starting with "napp-it-0.9b3", which the normal booting operation.
[10:58:48] <tsoome> you can add -k kernel option so on panic you will get into kernel debugger and can see the panic message
[10:59:08] <tsoome> eiter if its on the screen or by ::msgbuf command
[10:59:48] <fosterdv> I've done that.
[11:00:00] <tsoome> so, whats the message?
[11:01:05] <fosterdv> I don't quite know how to read it.
[11:01:33] <tsoome> take screenshot or picture?
[11:02:11] <fosterdv> Yeah
[11:02:21] <fosterdv> I took a bunch of them around it.
[11:04:13] <fosterdv> Is there a place you would recommend uploading them so I can link them here?

[16:49:47] <fosterdv> All of this started, I've been trying to get into a machine that my company was sold for storage. The only credentials we was given was for napp-it management. We have an admin account, but I can't log into openindiana with it. The troubled machine, I can get to the GUI for two of the options in my GRUB, which are "pre_napp-it-0.9b3 and openindiana-backup-1", but the creds don't work for those.?

[17:51:11] <gea> Your error messages indicate a corrupt system disk. While you can try to select a former system state during bootup the fastest recovery method is to reinstall the OS and import the pool. This is straight forward and can be done in less than 30minutes until your storage is up again without deeper knowledge while all repair options require a deeper knowledge,
[17:55:58] <rennj> famous last words..30minutes be quick job...
[17:56:07] <rennj> 5hours later...
[17:59:43] <fosterdv> Haha.. I'm reading and catching up on chat.
[18:03:38] <rennj> stolen resources, wasted man hours..
[18:06:10] <fosterdv> My question would be.. is there any risk in reinstalling the OS? Where I'm currently having issues with trying to import the pool, will I have better luck with a newer OS?
[18:08:17] <fosterdv> Haha, and I appreciate your guys' patience with me. I'm sorry for all of the dumb questions. If this was a couple hundred MB / GB, I talk smack about them needing to listen to me when I initially said we needed to get away from the current solution, but this is 25 TB, and very important data.
[18:12:35] <tsoome> the very important data unfortunately needs to use solid policy for updating the system - otherwise you end up hitting some bug. its just accident waiting to happen with old software.
[18:13:24] <fosterdv> Highly agreed.
[18:15:58] <gea> My service crew would say "No Backup, No Mercy. Only unimportant data can survive without backup."
[18:16:00] <gea> The good info for you. System disk and data pool is independent so a new OoenIndiana Hipster from scratch on it does not affect your data. Maybe you need a new system disk if the old is damaged. The next good news is that your old ZFS datapool, most probable V28 is importable in any newer Illumos or Solaris system. What you will loose is user and permissions. You may need to create them new....
[18:16:01] <gea> ...Trying an update of your old system is not an option.

[19:08:35] <gea> first question: are you sure that the systemdisk (rpool) is the problem and not one of the disks of the datapool?
[19:08:37] <gea> If its a backplane, power down and remove all datadisks and try to boot OpenIndiana only.
[19:08:38] <gea> On problems, select another system-state (bootenvironment) during bootup (spmething like pre...)
[19:09:50] <fosterdv> I'm able to get to the GUI of pre_napp-it-0.9XXXXXXXX
[19:10:02] <fosterdv> Also, I can get to openindiana-backup1
[19:11:50] <fosterdv> It's just the one I actually need I can't get to start up correctly and I don't have the credentials for root or any other user that the person who actually set this system up may have used.

[19:13:58] <gea> so you do not have a root password, is this the real problem?
[19:13:59] <gea> Do you have access to napp-it via http://ip:81
[19:22:06] <fosterdv> Yes, that's the problem. Nope, I don't have access to napp-it at all because that option in the bootup choices is where I'm getting all those errors.
[19:27:21] <gea> pre-xxx is a snapshot done by napp-it and shows the state prior a napp-it update. If this is not the state prior the very first setup, napp-it should work there.
[19:27:23] <gea> If you want to reset the password you would need to mount the BE and delete the password, see https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18752_01/html/817-0403/tsgeneral-18.html and https://openindiana.org/pipermail/openindiana-discuss/2016-April/018819.html
[19:27:24] <gea> The other option would be to use a new systemdisk (to keep the old one), install a modern OpenIndiana Hipster or OmniOS with a current napp-it and import the pool
[19:39:10] <gea> http://www.unixrock.com/2014/07/how-to-recover-solaris-11-root-password.html is another howto
[19:39:11] <gea> AS this system is so old, I would use a new systemdisk and import the datapool there
