[08:14:05] <ambient> Curiosity
[08:16:15] <ambient> I guess I had better come back when there is another iteration of OI
[08:16:21] <ambient> This one still seems too rough
[08:17:02] <swift110> oh i have it downloaded but havent played with it yet
[08:47:28] <tsoome> ambient: when exactly you get this message?
[08:50:03] <ambient> Right after install
[08:50:18] <ambient> when I rebooted, as prompted
[08:51:01] <tsoome> so you get boot: prompt?
[08:51:33] <ambient> yep
[08:51:51] <tsoome> if you enter: status
[08:52:26] <ambient> yeah
[08:52:34] <tsoome> it should list disk with partitions and zpool
[08:52:55] <ambient> disk0p1
[08:53:02] <ambient> illumos ZFS
[08:53:54] <tsoome> so, if you enter: zfs:rpool/ROOT/openindiana:/boot/zfsloader
[08:55:02] <tsoome> still can’t find it?
[08:55:03] <ambient> dsk0p1
[08:55:13] <ambient> default: dsk0p1
[08:56:32] <tsoome> hm. so it does know it should load from disk0p1 but it did not establish there is rpool there
[08:57:25] <tsoome> you did boot using cd or usb?
[08:57:44] <ambient> DVD
[08:58:10] <tsoome> ok, do boot dvd again but press esc on first boot loader menu to get OK prompt
[08:58:58] <tsoome> we want to see what does it detect for this installed setup
[09:00:01] <tsoome> once you are on ok prompt, enter: lsdev -v
[09:00:25] <tsoome> and see if it does display rpool after the disk devices
[09:01:08] <ambient> no rpool mentioned
[09:02:09] <tsoome> hrm, thats interesting
[09:02:28] <tsoome> is the disk count correct?
[09:02:38] <tsoome> and the partition table?
[09:03:00] <ambient> I did automatic
[09:03:04] <ambient> install
[09:03:22] <tsoome> GPT and whole disk?
[09:03:26] <ambient> I did not do any partition table but what the system gave me
[09:03:51] <tsoome> ok, so for some reason the boot loader is unable to see the pool
[09:03:58] <tsoome> enter: boot
[09:04:35] <tsoome> once you get the OI up from the dvd, get the terminal
[09:05:38] <tsoome> from there sudo -s or sudo su - root to get the root prompt, and enter: zpool import
[09:05:41] <ambient> I do not have the live DVD
[09:05:53] <tsoome> hm?
[09:05:57] <ambient> just the text based install dvd
[09:06:16] <tsoome> ah, it will allow you to get shell prompt
[09:06:40] <tsoome> it does display some selection menu and shell is there something like entry #3 or so
[09:07:16] <ambient> No, it asks what language, what time zone and so on
[09:07:19] <ambient> It is very narraow
[09:07:21] <tsoome> yes
[09:07:36] <tsoome> the “menu” will appear after language and TZ
[09:08:07] <ambient> okay, I am in
[09:08:51] <ambient> I zpool imported
[09:09:27] <tsoome> so, the pool actually was there
[09:09:42] <tsoome> or?
[09:09:59] <ambient> rpool1 ONLINE
[09:10:09] <ambient> c4t0d0 ONLINE
[09:10:29] <tsoome> ou, this system had some zfs based install before?
[09:10:49] <ambient> no, Installed, it did not work and I installed again
[09:11:10] <tsoome> does “zpool import” list any other pools beside rpool1 ?
[09:11:23] <ambient> just what I typed
[09:11:29] <tsoome> ok
[09:12:09] <tsoome> well, OI installer is a bit stupid - if you have existing rpool and you do reinstall, it will destroy old rpool, but will create rpool1
[09:12:36] <tsoome> anyhow, the big question is, why the bootloader fail to report rpool1
[09:13:03] <tsoome> ok, enter zpool import -N rpool1
[09:13:25] <tsoome> and then zpool get bootfs
[09:13:48] <tsoome> it should tell rpool1/ROOT/openindiana for bootfs
[09:14:37] <ambient> yep
[09:15:03] <tsoome> what does: "pkg publisher” tell?
[09:16:56] <ambient> openindiana.org
[09:17:06] <ambient> origin online F
[09:17:08] <ambient> and the url
[09:17:14] <tsoome> ok, enter: beadm mount openindiana /a
[09:17:25] <tsoome> and then pkg -R /a update
[09:17:34] <tsoome> that update will take some time
[09:18:36] <ambient> okie
[09:19:17] <tsoome> once it is done, bootadm install-bootloader -fvR /a
[09:19:23] <tsoome> and then beadm umount /a
[09:20:53] <ambient> You sure know a lot about openindiana : - )
[09:21:18] <tsoome> so with this you update the installed image in directory /a, then you reinstall boot blocks, unmount /a and then hopefully the boot is OK
[09:21:40] <tsoome> hopefully because we still do not know why it was inable to detect the pool on that disk
[09:21:48] <tsoome> unable*
[09:23:48] <tsoome> it certainly did read out the partition table, but for some reason the pool detection wont wrong. unfortuantely the boot dvd/usb medias are lagging behind somewhat, so this kind of update is the only easy way to get the most current bits
[09:28:50] <tsoome> I did the bootloader port so I certainly know as much as possible, but I am running out of time now, so if this does not help, it will be a bit of time when I can try to look more into this issue
[09:29:09] <ambient> tsoome, Thanks for your help
[09:29:10] <tsoome> we certainly would like to get it sorted one way or another.
[09:29:27] <ambient> tsoome, I am just curious about openindiana and had a spare SSD
[09:29:46] <tsoome> btw, with some systems people got help form BIOS update
[09:30:18] <ambient> tsoome, how do I update the BIOS?
[09:30:30] <tsoome> it is amazing how buggy some systems are and despite the boot loaders are using only BIOS calls, there still are many issues
[09:31:07] <ambient> openindiana is relatively newer and they have a smaller development base
[09:31:09] <tsoome> check from your hardware vendor page which BIOS they have for this system and compare with yours
[09:31:14] <ambient> Hopefully this will grow
[09:31:27] <ambient> This is an older laptop
[09:32:04] <tsoome> that too, but the bootloader code is actually 99.99% shared with freebsd, so that does increase the test base etc
[09:33:15] <ambient> bootadm NO such BE /devices/ramdisk:a
[09:34:31] <tsoome> sec
[09:37:39] <tsoome> enter: installboot -Fmv /a/boot/pmbr /a/boot/gptzfsboot /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0s0
[09:38:10] <tsoome> but, enter zdb and see if your rpool has c4t0d0s0
[09:41:44] <ambient> illegal option --v
[09:43:08] <tsoome> aye, just do not use -v
[09:44:19] <ambient> not a character device, unable to opendevice
[09:45:21] <tsoome> see zpool status, what disk does it see, I used c4 from your previous output
[09:46:24] <ambient> unable to open device
[09:46:56] <tsoome> anyhow, I have to run now, sorry
[09:47:01] <ambient> no worries
