[00:01:27] <RandalSchwartz> so can I install select_gcc and gcc46 and have the other ports build using it?
[00:01:59] <RandalSchwartz> err... gcc_select
[00:02:00] <neverpanic> no, you can't.
[00:02:04] *** jdolan has joined #macports
[00:02:20] <RandalSchwartz> ok... I'm looking for other solutions then
[00:02:20] <neverpanic> gcc_select or the port select mechanism will never influence what MacPorts itself uses to build your software
[00:02:33] <neverpanic> it will merely change your default if you type gcc or cc
[00:02:42] <neverpanic> All I'm getting out of mod_perl2 is mod_perl.c:62:41: error: use of undeclared identifier 'my_perl'
[00:02:50] <neverpanic> Do I need perl with +shared?
[00:02:55] <RandalSchwartz> yes, you do.
[00:03:01] <RandalSchwartz> and you don't get the error until you start apache
[00:03:04] <neverpanic> I do have.
[00:03:09] <neverpanic> this is a build error
[00:03:13] <neverpanic> with llvm-gcc-4.2 and clang
[00:03:36] <RandalSchwartz> yes, you need a perl +shared
[00:03:48] <RandalSchwartz> and possibly +threads
[00:03:58] <RandalSchwartz> I don't rememeber which of those were needed, but I have both in now. :)
[00:04:10] <RandalSchwartz> this is why I ran into trouble using pre-built packages before
[00:04:21] <RandalSchwartz> so now I use "sudo port install -spuv FOO" for everything :)
[00:04:22] <neverpanic> oh, +threads. Worth a shot.
[00:04:32] <jmr_mp> should look at making those default; there was talk about it in the past
[00:04:46] <RandalSchwartz> well there *is* non-thread-safe code
[00:04:52] <RandalSchwartz> but in that case, caveat executor :)
[00:05:27] <neverpanic> jmr_mp: at least having +shared as default would be nice. Some ports don't build (e.g. on the buildbot) without it
[00:05:56] <jmr_mp> IIRC nobody ever gave a definitive answer on the ticket about what the risks would be
[00:06:34] <neverpanic> that's because nobody understands perl anyway *hides*
[00:06:47] <RandalSchwartz> risks are - can't use mod_perl2 with modern lion
[00:06:53] <RandalSchwartz> showstopper for me
[00:07:06] <jmr_mp> can't use mod_perl2 anywhere with default perl variants, sounds like
[00:07:15] <RandalSchwartz> true
[00:07:21] <RandalSchwartz> nor postgresql +perl
[00:07:31] <RandalSchwartz> any place perl needs to be embedded
[00:07:43] <neverpanic> well, the code erroring is within #ifndef USE_ITHREADS, so having perl5 +threads might actually solve this
[00:07:43] <RandalSchwartz> perhaps even vim +perl
[00:07:46] <RandalSchwartz> but I'm not a vim user
[00:07:49] *** fried1 has quit IRC
[00:08:00] <RandalSchwartz> no - that just gets you past the first hurdle
[00:08:03] <RandalSchwartz> you can then compile it
[00:08:07] <RandalSchwartz> but you can't launch apache2
[00:08:12] <RandalSchwartz> you get that other error in the ticket
[00:08:13] <neverpanic> yeah, I know.
[00:08:21] <neverpanic> But the other thing might be the usual clang-inline-issue
[00:08:32] <neverpanic> I just want to reproduce it for now
[00:08:35] <RandalSchwartz> sure
[00:08:42] <RandalSchwartz> thanks for looking at this.
[00:08:44] <jmr_mp> which is really a code-assumes-gnu89-behaviour bug
[00:08:59] <neverpanic> yes.
[00:09:04] <RandalSchwartz> my fallback is running a full VMWare VM just to run a system on which I can build mod_perl2
[00:09:08] <RandalSchwartz> that'd be awkward
[00:09:11] <neverpanic> or a GNU89 is weird bug.
[00:11:31] *** hobodave has quit IRC
[00:13:57] <neverpanic> OK, [x] reproduced.
[00:15:26] <RandalSchwartz> nice
[00:15:36] <neverpanic> As I expected, the symbol missing is declared MP_INLINE
[00:15:53] <neverpanic> and I guess the definition of MP_INLINE is actually inline
[00:16:22] <RandalSchwartz> ahh - so gcc had also been putting it non-inline too, just in case?
[00:16:32] <RandalSchwartz> so this is broken code
[00:16:54] *** winut has joined #macports
[00:17:01] <neverpanic> well, it's code expecting to be compiled by GCC
[00:17:12] <neverpanic> because GCC assumes GNU89 if you don't specify anything
[00:17:18] <neverpanic> and clang assumes C99
[00:17:41] <neverpanic> MP_INLINE is defined as APR_INLINE
[00:17:43] <RandalSchwartz> can you tell clang to be C89?
[00:17:54] <jmr_mp> C89 doesn't have an inline keyword
[00:18:08] <RandalSchwartz> ahh, so that's how it works. :)
[00:19:06] <jmr_mp> gnu89 has it as an extension that behaves differently to what C99 eventually said
[00:19:25] *** winut_ has quit IRC
[00:20:52] <jmr_mp> hm, maybe we should just have a libperl port and get rid of the +shared variant
[00:21:00] <neverpanic> Apparently the mod_perl2 should have a dependency on apr
[00:21:06] <neverpanic> because it uses apr headers
[00:21:13] <jmr_mp> doesn't apache2?
[00:21:15] <RandalSchwartz> no - that's ok
[00:21:25] <RandalSchwartz> mod_perl2 depends on apache2, which depends on apr
[00:21:33] <RandalSchwartz> so it's already there indirectly
[00:21:41] <neverpanic> yeah, you're right I guess
[00:21:54] <neverpanic> well, APR defines APR_INLINE as __inline__
[00:21:58] <RandalSchwartz> port list rdepof:mod_perl2
[00:22:59] <neverpanic> so there's two possibilies now: remove all occurances of MP_INLINE or build with llvm-gcc-4.2 instead
[00:23:16] <jmr_mp> port echo is faster FWIW; port list does an index lookup on each result
[00:23:33] <neverpanic> port rdeps mod_perl2
[00:25:08] <RandalSchwartz> sure
[00:25:25] <RandalSchwartz> is stuff built with either compiler compatible?
[00:25:31] <RandalSchwartz> as in, they have the same call stack layout?
[00:25:37] *** JaRoel|4d has joined #macports
[00:25:39] <jmr_mp> yeah, ABI should be the same
[00:25:47] <RandalSchwartz> that's handy
[00:26:08] <jmr_mp> I'm sure they were quite deliberate about ensuring that
[00:26:08] <RandalSchwartz> can you try it with llvm-gcc-4.2 ?
[00:26:17] <RandalSchwartz> that'd be the least intrusive... fewer patches in source code
[00:26:26] <RandalSchwartz> less likely to break things. :)
[00:28:46] <neverpanic> I went with the other method for now
[00:29:00] <neverpanic> but you can always get the llvm-gcc-4.2 method on command line manually
[00:29:22] *** calvinx has joined #macports

[00:31:05] <neverpanic> what's the default way to check whether a specific package has been installed with a specific variant?
[00:31:14] <jmr_mp> hm, apparently it would also work if multiplicity was off
[00:32:08] <RandalSchwartz> that's +shared
[00:32:27] <RandalSchwartz> and needed for postgresql and mod_perl2
[00:33:03] <jmr_mp> neverpanic: either look for a file or parse the output of registry_active
[00:33:32] <neverpanic> RandalSchwartz: +threads is required, too.
[00:33:42] <neverpanic> I have code available for +shared
[00:34:04] <jmr_mp> "Make sure perl is built either with multiplicity and ithreads or without both" says upstream
[00:34:36] <neverpanic> apparently perl5 -MConfig -e "print \$Config{'useshrplib'}" checks for +shared
[00:34:55] <neverpanic> now if I knew perl I could probably come up with a similar expression testing +shared
[00:35:08] <neverpanic> jmr_mp: stupid question: Do we have multiplicity?
[00:35:08] <RandalSchwartz> what?
[00:35:22] <RandalSchwartz> you tested +shared in both?

[01:53:32] <drkp> I don't think I've heard from anyone who's tried Xcode 4.3 at all.

[15:52:05] <RandalSchwartz> eeek. :)
[15:52:46] <RandalSchwartz> by the way, you can get at that a bit faster with "perl -V:useshrplib"

[16:03:05] <Kimble> Hi. This is my first time using MacPorts. My aim is to create a Binary Package of Privoxy. This is for future installation on a Mac mini running 10.7.2 without MacPorts installed. Do I need a package, or a metapackage for this?
[16:03:40] <neverpanic> mpkg probably, but you will only be able to install into the same location as your macports is
[16:04:40] <Kimble> Oh. So a mpkg can't be used on a boot system where MacPorts is not installed?
[16:04:55] <neverpanic> it can, but it will install into /opt/local
[16:05:18] <neverpanic> that's not an issue if you're never going to install macports on that system, but it's worth keeping in mind if you consider installing it later
[16:05:29] <Kimble> Oh, that's ok. So, as long as I make sure to update my PATH, I should be able to run Privoxy fine?
[16:05:37] <neverpanic> yes
[16:05:53] <Kimble> Thanks neverpanic . :)
[16:06:10] <Kimble> Will the mpkg take care of things like creating the privoxy user and group too?
[16:06:31] <neverpanic> I don't think mpkg can do that
[16:06:57] <Kimble> Ok, so presumably I'll have to create my own launchd plists too, etc.
[16:07:16] <neverpanic> those might be inside the mpkg, since macports creates them for you
[16:07:39] <Kimble> Ah. Ok. Well, I guess the best thing to do now is give it a test run. Thanks for the help :)
[16:08:08] <neverpanic> do you want to move the package because you don't want to install Xcode on the target box or because you don't want to compile it there?

[18:22:12] <geekosaur> neverpanic, the -l version of libstdc++ is usually part of the compiler's own private libs; with g++, at least, it tends to be very tightly tied to the compiler version
[18:22:28] <geekosaur> (that is, libstdc++.dylib, with no version information)
[18:23:23] <neverpanic> and it doesn't find that one when building with -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk, but then who do other QMake-based C++ ports solve this?
[18:24:14] <geekosaur> right, because it's not there; it's where the compiler stores its own private objects and libraries, which should not be affected by -isysroot
[18:25:35] *** jberry has quit IRC
[18:26:27] <neverpanic> but it is, since qmake adds -Wl,-syslibroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk
[18:26:48] <neverpanic> which causes the ld call with -syslibroot and ld doesn't find clang's libstdc++.dylib
[18:27:00] <geekosaur> hm, except clang doesn't seem to have such. I wonder if it assumes an older g++ which didn't correctly deal with its libstdc++ not being compatible between versions
[18:27:29] <neverpanic> so clang expects me to link against the libstdc++ in the sdk?
[18:27:37] <neverpanic> because clang is what adds -lstdc++
[18:28:25] <geekosaur> let me rephrase: I do not know what clang thinks it is doing
[18:28:59] *** lipsinV2 has quit IRC
[18:29:01] <geekosaur> I *do* know that it's doing the wrong thing, given how libstdc++ works
[18:29:39] <neverpanic> but then the 10.7 SDK actually contains a symlink from libstdc++.dylib to libstdc++.6.dylib
[18:29:46] <neverpanic> and it builds just fine against it
[18:30:22] <geekosaur> hrm. then this might just be an xcode bug of sorts and the fix is to add that symlink
[18:30:52] <neverpanic> I don't think adding a symlink in /Developer is something I want to do...

[18:31:51] <CIA-24> mplayer2: Clean up ffmpeg's configure, disable universal variant as it breaks at inline assembly
[18:32:14] <geekosaur> I'm not sure that's the most appropriate fix, but I don't know clang/clang++ well enough to know if they handle e.g. the exception stuff changing every so often and libstdc++ being updated to match, such that you can't use the same libstdc++.so with compilers that emit different exception frames
[18:33:31] <neverpanic> I guess I'll just use llvm-gcc instead
[18:33:57] <geekosaur> (or if Apple has been dealing with that in their patched compilers. or for that matter if/how macports does...)
[18:34:06] <neverpanic> which works fine, btw.
[18:34:54] <geekosaur> I just know it was a pita to deal with when we had to maintain something like 6 gcc/g++ versions, and 4 of them had different exception frames so couldn't use each others' libstdc++.so)

[23:09:29] <Kimble> Hey. I used a mpkg created with MacPorts to install Squid on 10.7 "Lion". It appears to have provided a symlink in my LaunchDaemons dir to a .plist, but Squid doesn't run on boot. Is there a step I've missed?

[23:09:44] <Kimble> Other than this, Squid runs fine, btw.
[23:13:37] <Raim> Kimble: you need to enable this plist file using 'sudo port load squid' (or using launchctl)
[23:13:50] <Kimble> aha, thank you.
[23:27:19] <geekosaur> from an mpkg, I'm guessing port load might not work
[23:29:02] <Kimble> geekosaur: interesting you should say that. port load ran without errors, and squid is running, but I couldn't connect from the local network.
[23:29:13] <Kimble> Just re-booted the server machine.
[23:29:43] <geekosaur> you installed a port mpkg on a machine with macports installed? I hope it's not in the same prefix... that's a recipe for unfortunate things to happen in the future
[23:30:00] <geekosaur> (but if port load worked, it probably is in the same prefix)
[23:30:10] <Kimble> oh, crap, I forgot about that caveat.
[23:30:23] <Kimble> I installed it on the same machine as I compiled it on just to test it.
[23:31:08] <Kimble> Have I just knackered my MacPorts install?
[23:32:49] <geekosaur> hm. no idea, actually. if it was already "port install"ed, it harmlessly overwrote stuff. otherwise, anything that tries to "port install" stuff that came from the mpkg will likely throw tantrums about paths already being in use

[23:33:49] <Kimble> Well, thankfully, MacPort's docs clearly explains how to uninstall MacPorts and all misc files, so I can always just start from scratch if need be.
