[03:21:43] <TEttinger> JulienVillegas: on any target but GWT, you can use a byte[] to construct a Pixmap, and a byte[] should be pretty easy to store as a blob

[21:20:24] <TEttinger> some people prefer mercurial, but I don't know many who've stuck with it until today
[21:22:37] <TEttinger> because of github's discovery for public code and gitlab's free unlimited-number private repos (and gitlab being installable on your own servers if you want), git is a very strong contender other than its somewhat odd docs

[21:24:53] <[twisti]> other than gits direct advantages, the fact that the community adopted it nearly completely means that the tooling is getting a lot more support

[21:35:15] <TEttinger> and that sourceforge is hot garbage
[21:38:09] <myke> it's a bummer that there's still a lot of useful software on sourceforge
[21:41:31] <[twisti]> im personally a huge fan of gitlab, which has the additional awesomeness of letting you self host it with a few docker commands
[21:45:26] <TEttinger> I should probably bring PractRand over to github, I think the license is permissive... also all of vigna's RNG testing software is hosted in a very precarious way because it relies on the university-hosted code of marsaglia, rest in peace
[21:48:44] <TEttinger> I'd like to see a biography piece on all these absolutely out-there people in the random number generator space. I imagine a mockumentary would be just as believable
[21:50:04] <TEttinger> marsaglia had criticisms of existing generators back in the 70s I think but didn't release a working generator that addressed those criticisms until hardware could handle it, around 2004?
[21:52:36] <TEttinger> vigna's had good results tweaking marsaglia's generators, but when he made his own it had issues that he refused to acknowledge :| fixing it slows it down, no longer the fastest if it passes tests
[21:54:30] <TEttinger> o'neill has an amazing quality generator but her paper wasn't accepted into being published, and it seems like she's in "Kill Bill" mode trying to bring down vigna's latest generator (ran a test for 6 months it looks like, found a flaw that shouldn't exist if Vigna is right)
[21:56:41] <[twisti]> that sounds both exciting and sad somehow
[21:57:14] <TEttinger> well o'neill has had a good career, she's gotten promoted a lot at the college she's at
[21:57:42] <TEttinger> currently dean or chair of computer science I think
[21:58:26] <[twisti]> two l's
[21:58:45] <TEttinger> vigna I think may think of the random numbers as a distraction, he also works on webscale extremely huge stuff, and that's why he needs big generators
[22:00:17] <TEttinger> his problem domain doesn't really care about binary matrix rank issues, but my problem domain very much does (the problem happens when random numbers are requested in a way that lines up to a 2D grid)
