[02:25:43] <kendalja> hello all
[02:25:53] <kendalja> I just installed haiku and it will no boot
[02:28:35] <kendalja> not
[02:28:56] <kendalja> I am in gparted now and everything looks ok
[02:33:44] <kendalja> ??
[02:36:02] <JonathanThompson> helfujitsu!
[02:38:07] <kendalja> ?
[02:41:23] <JonathanThompson> Check the list of usernames, kendalja...
[02:41:33] <JonathanThompson> I was curious if he was both present AND accounted for :p
[02:41:45] <kendalja> usernames?
[02:44:24] <JonathanThompson> Are you now telling me I need to explain THAT?
[02:45:19] <kendalja> you say check the list of usernames.....meaning in haiku because as I just explained haiku wont boot
[02:46:01] <JonathanThompson> Did it ever occur to you that not everyone responds to your questions with answers you seek, but instead, are agents for themselves, looking for other things?
[02:46:13] <JonathanThompson> I would have used your username had I been replying to you.
[02:46:18] <kendalja> nope
[02:48:46] <JonathanThompson> Well, list this under useful online rules to remember: correlation and causation of someone posting something aren't always logical.
[02:49:00] <JonathanThompson> (In relation to something else posted)
[02:49:02] <kendalja> check
[02:50:18] <dreamed> that was a fairly jerktastic way of saying you weren't responding to his query
[02:50:32] <JonathanThompson> Thank you, dreamed!
[02:50:37] <kendalja> :P
[02:50:50] <dreamed> I was talking about you, JonathanThompson :P
[02:50:55] <kendalja> lol
[02:50:56] <JonathanThompson> I know :D
[02:51:03] * dreamed blows raspberries
[02:51:56] <JonathanThompson> dreamed, it was a teaching moment, and I don't believe in trying to sugar coat things too much :p
[02:52:49] <kendalja> gparted sees my drive /dev/sda1 but I get "No bootable devices, strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility
[02:53:16] <kendalja> already reinstalled haiku
[02:53:23] <kendalja> but I get the same error
[02:53:33] <dreamed> JonathanThompson: the thing about teaching moments, is that usually you teach someone already studying something :P
[02:53:39] <dreamed> kendalja: I wish I knew enough to be of any help
[02:53:42] <dreamed> heh
[02:53:48] <JonathanThompson> dreamed: sometimes they have to learn in the school of real life :D
[02:54:02] <JonathanThompson> And they don't yet know that they don't yet know what they don't yet know ;)
[02:54:38] <dreamed> ah - but sometimes they will know that they don't know, and seek to further their learning
[02:54:53] <dreamed> and then is the appropriate time for the teaching moment
[02:54:58] <dreamed> anything else is just being an asshat :P
[02:55:42] * JonathanThompson thinks dreamed is being overly sensitive about this whole exchange :p
[02:56:20] <JonathanThompson> Take note, kendalja, dreamed is the only one calling anyone names :D
[02:56:29] <kendalja> :P
[02:58:07] <kendalja> now hpw dp o fix lol
[02:58:10] <kendalja> how
[02:58:34] <dreamed> in my experience if someone's being abusive, and I'm not saying this is you (the example I'm thinking of would pertain better to something like misogyny), the people who don't speak up to say it's wrong are thought to agree with the abuser
[02:59:01] <dreamed> (by the abuser)
[02:59:51] <dreamed> so I speak up :P
[02:59:52] <JonathanThompson> kendalja: are you absolutely certain you've got the boot sector for that Haiku partition correctly recorded?
[03:00:22] <JonathanThompson> Well, dreamed, that seems very much like you're calling me an abuser, despite your supposed disclaimers :p
[03:01:09] <dreamed> not at all
[03:01:11] <kendalja> its one partition /dev/sda1 and it is ext4
[03:01:14] <dreamed> I realise you were being fairly lighthearted
[03:01:19] <dreamed> problem is it reads like a false positive
[03:01:26] <dreamed> but I prefer that to the alternative
[03:01:26] *** mmadia has quit IRC
[03:01:34] <JonathanThompson> A true positive?
[03:02:00] <dreamed> A true positive if you're actually being abusive :P
[03:02:38] <kendalja> idk this is odd
[03:02:46] * JonathanThompson watches US national news about the recent tornadoes
[03:02:46] <kendalja> maybe something messed up the mbr?
[03:03:07] <JonathanThompson> kendalja: IIRC, there's the MBR, and then there's the boot record on each individual partition.
[03:03:26] <JonathanThompson> But, the MBR *could* be messed up, too, but it's not the only place to check.
[03:03:56] *** WiZ has quit IRC
[03:03:59] <augiedoggie> you installed haiku but the disk has one ext4 partition?
[03:04:11] <kendalja> yes augiedoggie
[03:04:23] <augiedoggie> are you trying to boot haiku from ext4?
[03:04:23] <kendalja> How about I start fresh in gparted
[03:04:36] <kendalja> what should the filesystem be
[03:04:39] <augiedoggie> befs
[03:04:46] <augiedoggie> or bfs
[03:04:53] *** Barrett has quit IRC
[03:05:05] *** WiZ has joined #haiku
[03:05:12] <kendalja> there is btrfs
[03:05:39] <augiedoggie> no, you have to format the disk from within Haiku or by using the build system to do it
[03:06:03] <NeonLicht> Is btrfs ready to use in production?
[03:06:23] <kendalja> well I installed haiku and converted
[03:06:37] <kendalja> to befs
[03:06:47] <kendalja> and when I reboot I get that error
[03:07:02] <kendalja> "No bootable devices, strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility
[03:07:17] <kendalja> then when I go into gparted the filesystem says its ext4
[03:07:18] <JonathanThompson> You did it in that order?
[03:07:40] <kendalja> yes
[03:07:52] <JonathanThompson> You need to format to befs, then install Haiku on that partition, and also make sure you write to the MBR, as well as the partition boot record.
[03:08:55] <JonathanThompson> Usually, installing Haiku will ask you to format a partition as needed: if you didn't do that, it won't work.
[03:09:27] <JonathanThompson> I don't know of anything that'll convert from some other partition type to Haiku's type with the files copied on it beforehand.
[03:09:47] <kendalja> well I am going to make a new partition in gprated to begin with. It will not allow me to create a "befs" partition
[03:10:08] <kendalja> so what fs should I make it
[03:10:18] <JonathanThompson> Well, just name it "haiku" or something distinct, then select that upon installing Haiku to reformat it.
[03:10:24] <kendalja> ok
[03:10:44] <JonathanThompson> Don't worry about the starting FS: let the Haiku installer kill it for you (you may need to exit out to the partitioning utility)
[03:11:24] <JonathanThompson> If you don't like the partition name to remain that way, not a big deal: renaming it won't break things.
[03:11:29] <kendalja> well right now /dev/sda1 is ext4 and labeled haiku
[03:11:42] <kendalja> I will boot to kaiku and convert it to befs
[03:11:44] <kendalja> ?
[03:12:00] <JonathanThompson> You need to boot from a Haiku CD or something for installing.
[03:12:11] <kendalja> yes thats what i mean sorry
[03:12:14] <JonathanThompson> I've not played with Haiku in a LONG time.
[03:12:31] <JonathanThompson> I don't know how much things have changed from how BeOS installed with formatting.
[03:12:40] <JonathanThompson> All that can be looked up on the site, I'm sure.
[03:12:59] <kendalja> booting haiku cd now
[03:13:51] <JonathanThompson> I'll check back in about 15 minutes, I've got IRL things I need to do :D
[03:14:08] <kendalja> ok so "run installer"
[03:14:34] *** vision7986864657 has joined #haiku
[03:15:10] <kendalja> wtf
[03:15:38] <kendalja> this says /dev/disk/ata/0/master/0 "Be File System"
[03:15:55] <kendalja> and gparted says /dev/sda1 "ext4"
[03:16:14] <dreamed> ata 0 and sda1 are the same disk?
[03:16:39] <kendalja> why would one say ext4 and the other befs
[03:17:28] <augiedoggie> I believe it's because the bfs driver in Haiku isn't as picky, it'll install to a partition with a different ID
[03:17:38] <augiedoggie> but still recognize it as bfs
[03:18:00] <kendalja> this sucks lol
[03:18:11] <augiedoggie> I would run makebootable on the partition
[03:18:22] <augiedoggie> then install a boot manager with "BootManager"
[03:18:22] <kendalja> in gparted?
[03:18:26] <augiedoggie> no, haiku
[03:18:35] <kendalja> run it as live?
[03:18:49] <augiedoggie> iirc, you should be able to open a terminal from the installer
[03:19:08] <augiedoggie> if not, then reboot to a live desktop
[03:19:32] <kendalja> no terminal from installer
[03:19:42] <kendalja> booting to livecd
[03:22:00] <kendalja> ok
[03:22:12] <kendalja> so makebootable /dev/sda1 ?
[03:22:22] <augiedoggie> right click desktop -> Mount -> Haiku
[03:22:36] <augiedoggie> did you boot to Haiku?
[03:22:43] <kendalja> the live cd
[03:22:51] <augiedoggie> yeah, mount the Haiku drive
[03:23:14] <kendalja> mounted
[03:23:16] <augiedoggie> then open a terminal and "makebootable /Haiku"
[03:23:35] <augiedoggie> the name might be different, like "/Haiku1" or something
[03:24:21] <kendalja> error
[03:24:40] <kendalja> Could not update BFS boot block: Operation Not Supported
[03:25:13] <augiedoggie> yeah, I think the CD uses /Haiku, try /Haiku1
[03:25:31] <kendalja> ok that worked now I just renamed it to Haiku1
[03:25:46] <augiedoggie> then run /boot/system/apps/BootManager
[03:26:06] <augiedoggie> and install the stage1 loader
[03:27:00] <kendalja> no bootmanager
[03:29:02] <augiedoggie> huh? it didn't install?
[03:29:38] <kendalja> I am running the installer now to reinstall
[03:32:51] <kendalja> but i dont see a bootmanager
[03:33:06] <augiedoggie> is this A2 or a nightly?
[03:33:47] <kendalja> a2
[03:34:01] <augiedoggie> ok, just open a terminal and run "bootman"
[03:34:09] <augiedoggie> it has been renamed since A2
[03:35:19] <kendalja> boot menu is complete
[03:35:26] <kendalja> should I reboot now?
[03:35:30] <augiedoggie> try it
[03:35:34] <kendalja> and see if it boots hdd
[03:35:43] <augiedoggie> sure
[03:36:03] <kendalja> success
[03:36:58] <kendalja> now i need wifi to work lol
