[22:24:49] <davis> on ubuntu there is a python-rsa, on fink I dont think i saw that.
[22:25:16] <davis> basically after I did the git pull and setup, I am doing installs of all the things in requirements-docs.txt

[22:29:49] <davis> hmm. it works for me using my key in linux.
[22:32:16] <Snaggle> davis: same boto release?
[22:33:29] <davis> Snaggle: i am using git version of boto on linux. I tried to use that on mac, but I eventually just did the fink install of boto.
[22:36:08] <Snaggle> Ping the maintainer (fink info boto-py27). Like howarth said, boto might need to be updated to keep up with the amazonaws API.
[22:43:06] <howarth> updating to 2.36.0 allows some of https://boto.readthedocs.org/en/latest/getting_started.html to work
[22:43:15] <howarth> I am unsure if I am testing properly
[22:43:43] <howarth> as I have no idea how one obtains YOURACCESSKEY or YOURSECRETKEY
[22:43:47] <davis> hmm.
[22:43:54] <howarth> bucket = s3.create_bucket('boto-demo-%s' % int(time.time()))
[22:44:03] <howarth> produces a traceback

[22:44:36] <davis> and then tried to just use the python installed by python to run the setup. it installs, but its the same error.
[22:44:45] <howarth> what error?
[22:44:46] <davis> it will not authenticate me
[22:45:24] <howarth> are you creating a .boto file?
[22:45:38] <davis> yes i have .boto file that works in linux
[22:45:47] <davis> but it does nto work on mac
[22:46:26] <davis> i'm curious, I am new to mac. There is brew, macport, fink. It seems to me that fink is the biggest. Is that accurate to say?
[22:46:44] <howarth> what version of boto is on linux?
[22:47:00] <davis> in both cases, i pulled boto from git
[22:47:19] <davis> so on my linux box, i did python setup.py install
[22:47:53] <davis> on my mac box, I did: /sw/bin/python2.7 setup.py install
[22:48:30] <davis> then in my boto_test.py I changed the top of the script from #!/usr/bin/python to #/sw/bin/python2.7 on mac
[22:51:02] <Snaggle> Fink is the oldest of the 3 package managers. As for number of packages, Fink and macports have roughly equivalent numbers. Homebrew has less (I think). They all have different philosophies on how packages interact.

[23:08:03] <howarth> is that linux box totally up to date on openssl?
[23:08:07] <davis> it says at end, SSL: certificate verify failed
[23:08:37] <howarth> one possibility is that boto is using an ssl method that has been turned off in recent openssl
[23:08:53] <davis> the linux box is an ubutu machine, i did an apt-get update, upgrade prior to installing boto from git

[23:14:37] <howarth> but which python version?
[23:14:44] <howarth> that is key
[23:15:21] <davis> on ubuntu python 2.7.6
[23:15:27] <howarth> that is the issue
[23:15:33] <howarth> we have a newer python
[23:15:43] <howarth> let me see if I can create a patch
[23:15:44] <davis> yes, on mac i'm using fink python 2.7.9
[23:15:54] <howarth> from https://github.com/boto/boto/issues/2901
[23:15:56] <davis> who are you dude? superman?
[23:16:01] <howarth> Since it's wal-e, I copied in Eugeny's code at the beginning of the wal-e script after the last import statement but before the if statement and it's working fine.
[23:16:02] <howarth> I know that it's not ideal, but it's an inelegant hack to get things working again in Python 2.7.9
[23:16:27] <davis> yeah i read that. that is ipressive you can patch it so quick
[23:20:26] <howarth> I can't puzzle out where they intend to patch
[23:20:38] <davis> i was looking at that as well
[23:20:55] <howarth> debian sid doesn't have any patches even though they are on 2.7.9
[23:20:55] <davis> you are looking at issue 477?
[23:21:05] <howarth> but that just might mean the breakage isn't reported yet
[23:25:05] <howarth> also
[23:25:05] <howarth> http://bugs.python.org/issue23052
[23:26:08] <howarth> https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0476/
[23:26:31] <howarth> seems like newer python now tries to validate the certificates
[23:26:47] <howarth> It is also possible though highly discouraged to globally disable verification by monkeypatching the ssl module:
[23:26:47] <howarth> import ssl
[23:26:47] <howarth> ssl._create_default_https_context = ssl._create_unverified_context
[23:27:36] <howarth> so the newer python 2.7.9 may be triggering latent bugs in boto
[23:29:04] <davis> howarth: wow you made my day
[23:29:17] <davis> i did those two lines in my script and it works now on mac
