[22:45:53] <danielj> dak180: What is the nature of the error you’re having with libnghttp2.5? It builds for me and the deps look reasonable to me.
[22:48:32] <dak180> danielj: i finally got to install but the issue stemmed from one dependency wanting something to be there and another wanting something that conflicted; the error message was not very clear at first though
[22:49:27] <dak180> danielj: if you want i can go back through it and extract the messages though
[22:49:30] <danielj> Ah, so something a bit down the dep chain? I’ll look into it.
[22:49:37] <dak180> danielj: ja
[22:50:03] <danielj> If you can do so easily then yes please.
[22:51:00] <dak180> danielj: it may have turned up because i use debfoster to only keep the minimum package set installed
[22:51:12] <danielj> I do the same.
[22:51:23] <danielj> debfoster is awesome.
[22:51:32] <dak180> ☺️
[22:53:29] <dak180> i also use a custom set of fink bundle packages so i only have 4 or 5 packages explicitly installed; it helps with being able to recreate my setup quickly
[22:54:43] <danielj> Interesting idea.
[22:55:05] <dak180> danielj: i thought so ☺️
[22:55:28] <danielj> That’s handy when updating to a new OS.
[22:55:43] <dak180> yep
[22:56:20] <dak180> danielj: basically the packages are just a list of dependencies and a type declaration
[22:58:58] <howarth> python question
[22:59:18] <howarth> do we have any pythonmods which build with both gcc and g++?
[22:59:48] <howarth> the pymol developers are migrating the code from c to c++
[23:00:11] <howarth> but are doing this with the .cpp suffix
[23:00:33] <howarth> however their setup.py doesn't seem to use g++ for .cpp
[23:00:45] <howarth> only for the final linkage of _cmd.so
[23:01:16] <howarth> from a Google search, it is unclear how brain-dead distutil is on this
[23:01:45] <howarth> at first glance it seems to only know about one compiler at a time
[23:02:04] <howarth> but I find it hard to believe that they would leave it so crippled for so long
[23:05:56] <dak180> danielj: http://pastebin.com/18xK22Vr should have all the details you need but let me know if you need more
[23:06:18] <danielj> dak180: Thanks
[23:07:04] <danielj> howarth: Don’t know off the top of my head.
[23:07:44] <howarth> it is rather annoying because it limits what you can do with the build
[23:08:24] <howarth> every single .c file has to be migrated over to .cpp before you can pass -std=c+11 for instance
[23:09:07] <danielj> Oh, I do know that pyqt4/5 uses C++.
[23:14:55] <danielj> https://docs.python.org/2/extending/extending.html#writing-extensions-in-c
[23:16:04] <danielj> Looks like python wants to build extensions with the same compiler the interpreter was built with. Maybe that’s why?
[23:17:14] <danielj> There must be a way to specify the compiler though.
[23:23:15] <danielj> howarth: distutils should use the appropiate compiler based on the file extension. So .cpp should be built with g++ unless pymol is doing something weird.
[23:25:29] <danielj> You can also explicitly set the “language” of the “Extension” object in setup.py to c, c++ or objc.
[23:25:32] <howarth> https://sourceforge.net/p/pymol/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/pymol/setup.py
[23:26:01] <howarth> somehow that is locking in both .c and .cpp to gcc
[23:26:17] *** fangism has joined #fink
[23:26:34] <danielj> Oh yes, they’re doing non-standard things.
[23:26:57] <danielj> Looks like they’re overriding CCompiler.
[23:27:40] <howarth> so we need to examine the stock CCompiler to find what they have lost
[23:31:51] <danielj> distutils.CCompiler is indeed what determines which compiler to use.
[23:32:54] *** fangism has quit IRC
[23:34:27] <howarth> wonder if it could be as simple as putting the language_map into their ccompiler
[23:37:28] <danielj> What they’re doing is replacing distutils.CCompiler.compile with they’re CCompiler_compile. Not sure why it breaks things.
[23:38:13] <danielj> Urr, wrong “they’re” there. Should have been “their”.
[23:38:30] <danielj> Need food.
[23:56:30] <howarth> commenting out
[23:56:30] <howarth> distutils.ccompiler.CCompiler.compile = CCompiler_compile
[23:56:47] <howarth> in their setup.py doesn't cause .cpp to use c++
