[01:25:04] <WLP|Away> I have a Java app project I am attempting to organize. The project has branched into 1.0 (which predates use of Eclipse or my involvement), 2.0, and Trunk. Unfortunately, the system is more complicated than that. You see, the app displays animations (like PowerPoint). I added a record mode where it outputs each frame to an SVG file and lets the user record audio for that frame. Now for...
[01:25:06] <WLP|Away> ...how that affects Eclipse. I also added a webpage that plays back those recorded animations on any HTML5 browser with SVG support. I would like to know the best way to organize this using a single workspace. Any ideas? The remote port (the website) also has a 2.0 and trunk version. Also, all 6 branches need to go into the same SVN repository.

[09:35:45] <Leoforpainting> Hi everyone. My eclipse compiles class files irrespective of compile time errors in the code (e.g. parenthesis mismatch). The error message is encoded in the class file and is shown when running the file. Is there a way to prevent this behaviour, so no class files are created?
[09:36:52] <ron> Leoforpainting: if you don't mind me asking, why do you want to disable it?

[09:42:09] <Leoforpainting> @ron: The class files are not run locally but copied over to a server to be run in context of a different program. Sometimes the error messages are completely swallowed, so I sometimes find out a lot later that I installed a broken file. This is annoying for compile time errors.
[09:43:15] <devish> toinstall eclipse on linux do we have to make whole directory executable
[09:43:20] <devish> ?
[09:43:57] <ron> Leoforpainting: you mean for remote debugging? generally speaking, you shouldn't use eclipse-generated files on production/test environments.
[09:44:03] <devish> i am installin from a tarball from eclipse.org
[09:44:07] <ron> devish: no?
[09:45:21] <devish> ron: so inside /home/eclipse when i do ./eclipse it should run,though it doesn't

[09:47:00] <timotei> but {@inheritDoc} is NOT working/recognized by the eclipse 3.7
[09:47:31] <Leoforpainting> devish: yes.
[09:48:30] *** intellilogic has joined #eclipse
[09:48:49] <Leoforpainting> ron: So the solution would be to create a build script of some form (ant or similar) since this behaviour can not be prevented?
[09:49:10] <Leoforpainting> @devish: What's the error it prints out?
[09:49:38] <devish> yes, i did that but when i click or do ./eclipse it says install the appropriate app and via cli it says permission denied
[09:53:51] <devish> does some special tricks are required to install eclipse in linux after unpacking the tarball?
[09:54:36] <Leoforpainting> devish: usually not. It should run directly from the tarball.
[09:54:49] *** BigKing has joined #eclipse
[09:55:11] <Leoforpainting> devish: but why not just give it a try to change the whole dir to +x then you know if the problem is permission related.

[13:30:09] <rcjsuen> yoriy: You mean when you expand a folder's tree Eclipse crashes?
[13:30:29] <rcjsuen> Does this happen for any folder? Even a folder with a .txt file?
[13:31:19] <rcjsuen> platero: I don't even understand your question.
[13:31:46] <platero> rcjsuen, Thank you, let me try to explain myself again.
[13:32:19] *** Pasqualle has joined #eclipse
[13:32:31] <platero> I am implementing a propertysource for one object which has a color as attribute
[13:32:53] <platero> then for my PropertySource i am using the ColorPropertyDescription
[13:33:27] <platero> the problem is that i that in the propertysheetview i see the value of the color in text but not any color
[13:33:52] <platero> but if i click over it, i get the ColorCellEditor and then i can see the color together with the RGB value in text
[13:34:32] <platero> so i dont know how to force to see always this combination of the color (a rectugular image with the color) and the value of the rgb in text
[13:35:44] <platero> I am very bad making myself clear
[13:36:13] <rcjsuen> I don't think what you want is possible.
[13:36:17] <platero> I search in the foro and google but i saw some threads in some foro asking the same but no reply
[13:36:22] <platero> no?
[13:36:37] <platero> I didnt by myown something similar
[13:36:48] <platero> but it is not perfect
[13:37:12] <platero> because now when u press over u get the colorcelleditor over the label that i made
[13:37:26] <platero> and it is a little ugly
[13:38:02] *** drthingums has quit IRC
[13:40:12] <rcjsuen> You made a custom label?
[13:41:04] <eMBee> rcjsuen: regarding your question yesterday: yes, in my case the folder has both the .git folder and the .project file
[13:41:52] <rcjsuen> Don't think I've tried that before.
[13:42:20] *** briandealwis has joined #eclipse
[13:43:45] <eMBee> in this case i have no choice because i didn't set up the repo, but in general it doesn't make sense to me to have multiple projects in the same repo, especially because git does not allow getting only part of the repo, so it seems more logical to have one repo per project
[13:45:09] <rcjsuen> If every project of yours is unrelated, yes.
[13:46:53] <eMBee> well, if they are related enough to be in the same repo why would they be seperate projects? (unless i mix multiple languages that need seperate eclipse project configuration)
[13:47:32] <eMBee> i am new to eclipse though, so i don't quite get the point of multiple projects.
[13:47:39] *** devish has left #eclipse
[13:48:19] <eMBee> my impression is i'd use multiple projects if i have say a library that can be used by multiple applications, and then a project for each
[13:48:25] <rcjsuen> I mean for modularity purposes.
[13:48:41] *** Duolos has joined #eclipse
[13:49:07] <eMBee> what kind of modularity would call for seperate projects?
[13:49:08] <rcjsuen> Your backend code is unrelated to your frontend code, but your frontend code depends on your backend code. You'd probably have two projects.
[13:49:13] <Duolos> Hey, I'm trying to get Eclipse running on my Linux system. However, I can't figure out how to tell it where my JRE is installed...
[13:49:15] <eMBee> right
[13:49:28] <eMBee> but in the same case i'd also want two git repos
[13:49:30] <Duolos> JRE/JDK
[13:49:36] <eMBee> hence one repo per project
[13:52:22] <rcjsuen> ~tell Duolos about vm
[13:52:22] <Arbalest> Duolos: To start Eclipse with a specific Java VM, you should start Eclipse with the -vm argument. This should look something like 'eclipse.exe -vm C:\jdk1.5.0.6\bin\java.exe' or './eclipse -vm /opt/sun-jdk-1.6.0.03/bin/java'. Note that the path of the 'java' executable is being passed and _not_ a folder.
[13:52:40] <rcjsuen> eMBee: well, we have many projects in one repo, but anyway, this is unimportant
[13:53:11] *** mgolisch has left #eclipse
[13:53:11] *** dirk_77__ has quit IRC
[13:53:45] <Duolos> Arbalest: and I assume I can use Eclipse just fine if the JDK/JRE is in a path within my home folder, correct?
[13:53:47] <eMBee> i find it interesting to learn about the motivation for this structure
[13:54:31] <rcjsuen> Duolos: Presumably, but I don't like to let fate decide such things.
[13:54:50] <Duolos> rcjsuen: What would you suggest, then?
[13:54:56] <eMBee> if you have many projects in one repo then you can never check out a subset of those project because git doesn't support that
[13:54:57] <rcjsuen> What Arbalest said.
[13:55:15] <rcjsuen> eMBee: You're right, you can't. We have bug fixes that span multiple projects in one commit.
[13:56:21] <eMBee> it is easier to merge multiple git repos (eg. using subrepos) than split a repo
[13:57:42] <rcjsuen> dunno, my Git foo is near zero
[13:58:31] <Duolos> For developing software for Android, is the Java6 JDK sufficient, or should I use 7?
[13:58:43] <Duolos> (brand new coder here)
[13:58:48] <eMBee> rcjsuen: are you working on egit, or are you just using it?
[13:59:27] <rcjsuen> eMBee: I work on it when I have time. That's not my day job. But since we migrated to Git recently I help fix that come up now that we're using it more.
[13:59:46] <rcjsuen> Duolos: For Eclipse it doesn't matter. For Android I don't know, ask the Android people.
[14:00:15] <eMBee> i see, well, thanks for your help so far, now it's time for me to put this to use and learn the ways of eclipse...
[14:01:01] <eMBee> i have a small team of 3 people here working on a project and i need to figure out how to share the code among us
[14:01:26] <rcjsuen> When you try to share the project the wizard still doesn't detect the .git folder?
[14:02:24] <eMBee> it only looks for the git folder in the workspace not in the directory that i actually imported the project from
[14:03:41] <rcjsuen> Yes it seems it likes to look at the parent and not the root.
[14:05:02] <eMBee> my current solution is: import the project as java project with ant file, then import the project again via git wizard as general project, then copy the .project file from the ant import into the git repo. restart eclipse and the git project has the correct java -ant project configuration
[14:06:50] <rcjsuen> Perhaps if you first define the repository in the 'Git Repositories' view then you can select it in the wizard.
[14:06:55] <rcjsuen> in the dropdown combo
[14:08:15] <eMBee> i am pretty sure i already had the git repo defined
[14:08:33] <eMBee> i got my solution from https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=324145

[18:25:14] <rcjsuen> you need to dig deep, they're buried in there somewhere
