[19:52:52] <Trixboxer> Hello, where is xs-tools.iso download link ?
[19:54:28] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: you don't need to download it, it comes with XenServer
[19:55:03] <Trixboxer> is it inside the xenserver iso ?
[19:55:06] <kdavy__> you can SCP into any xenserver host and grab the iso from there
[19:55:16] <Trixboxer> k cool
[19:55:18] <Trixboxer> thanks
[19:55:22] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: that too, it must be there. i dont know exact path though
[19:56:10] <Trixboxer> no worry i'll get it
[19:56:37] <Trixboxer> I was just checking on google and it gave me 0 download links :p ( now I know )
[19:58:37] <kdavy__> heh
[19:58:53] <Trixboxer> today is quite cool on #citrix
[19:59:06] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: i know. i could use some help myself actually
[19:59:06] <Trixboxer> not only citrix but most of the channels :)
[20:00:19] <kdavy__> yeah, i wonder why that is
[20:00:49] <kdavy__> i know there is a daytona 500 race going on somewhere, but i havent heard of a single IT person being into Nascar
[20:01:57] <Trixboxer> may be Cricket World Cup
[20:02:09] <kdavy__> heh that's even less of interest
[20:02:32] <kdavy__> you must be from the UK or Australia/NZ?
[20:05:24] <Trixboxer> nah from India
[20:05:40] <Trixboxer> just wont the first match .. :)
[20:06:01] <Trixboxer> and u ?
[20:06:13] <kdavy__> oh, well I wasn't that far off - the only countries in the world that pay attention to cricket are from the former British Empire
[20:06:20] <kdavy__> i'm in Texas
[20:06:43] <kdavy__> but from Russia originally
[20:06:56] <Trixboxer> wow.. USA in not much concerned about cricket :)
[20:07:01] <Trixboxer> neither Russia ..
[20:07:04] <kdavy__> nope
[20:07:09] <Trixboxer> must be a football lover
[20:07:18] <kdavy__> hah, only soccer
[20:07:26] <kdavy__> (i.e. proper football)
[20:07:52] <Trixboxer> correct
[20:14:22] <kdavy__> hmm ok i think my lun mappings are finally starting to look normal
[20:15:23] <kdavy__> i'm so glad i only have 5 xenserver hosts, not 50, otherwise this would take days
[20:15:30] <Trixboxer> Im bad at recovering things.. mainly VDI (O-O)
[20:16:32] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: nah i dont care about recovery here, i'm adding new storage and getting the infamous SR Backend Failure 47 error
[20:16:57] <Trixboxer> let me see what and who raises it
[20:17:03] <kdavy__> my /dev/sd* mappings are all over the place, fdisk -l output is all screwed up with ghost LUNs and so on
[20:17:27] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: don't bother, i've looked
[20:17:33] <Trixboxer> cool
[20:17:45] <Trixboxer> im just getting myself aware of python code
[20:17:46] <kdavy__> i know what the problem is, it's just taking forever to fix
[20:17:55] <Trixboxer> any specific reason ?
[20:18:15] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: yeah i was getting multipath to work in an unsupported configuration
[20:18:24] <kdavy__> * trying to get multipath to work
[20:18:48] <kdavy__> and the ghost LUNs are remnants of my experiments
[20:19:03] <Trixboxer> cool, how significant multipath is ? in terms of performance..
[20:19:21] <kdavy__> finally ended up getting two more FC cards for the storage array and doing things properly (split fabrics, both HA controllers visible on both fabrics)
[20:19:52] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: it's mainly for redundancy, i'm not doing it for increased performance (although theoretically throughput should double, as well)
[20:21:20] <Trixboxer> Im just looking for multipath supported SAN
[20:21:36] <Trixboxer> have FC cards but few other things on priority
[20:21:44] <kdavy__> right now theoretically i should get 8Gbps at the front of each storage controller (2x4Gbps), and 60Gbps in the back-end (6x2Gbps FC -> 4Gbps + 8Gbps on controller + 48Gbps of SAS6 links to the SAS shelves)
[20:22:13] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: how much are you willing to spend on the SAN? :)
[20:23:33] <Trixboxer> depends on SAN and the ROI but can say midrange price
[20:25:07] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: i built mine for under $50k
[20:25:31] <kdavy__> redundant everything
[20:26:14] <Trixboxer> wow
[20:26:29] <Trixboxer> quite a high
[20:26:33] <kdavy__> based on Nexenta
[20:27:34] <kdavy__> that's quite low compared to what it would cost from a real SAN vendor - i'd estimate at least $200k for similar performance turn-key solution

[21:39:33] <Trixboxer> "Provisioning services (physical)" is that true ?
[21:40:01] <Trixboxer> kdavy__: How does it work for you ?
[21:40:35] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: i dont use provisioning services for xenserver hosts
[21:40:49] <kdavy__> that's only applicable in really huge farms, mine isn't that big
[21:41:06] <Trixboxer> 60Gbps SAN is big for me :P
[21:41:22] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: i'm leaving some room for growth
[21:41:59] <Trixboxer> quite small room

[23:08:55] <Trixboxer> how can I set sm-config of a VDI ? there is no direct xe syntax available
[23:34:40] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: i thought sm-config was a per-SR setting, not per-VDI
[23:35:16] <kdavy__> are you trying to set thin allocation on a per-VDI basis?
[23:35:25] <Trixboxer> nah
[23:35:50] <Trixboxer> a VDI is writable: true; and want to reset it
[23:36:46] <kdavy__> btw i finally got my thing figured out with the sr backend error. a bit of a pain in the ass, but looks like the easiest way is to disable multipathing on all hosts, then reboot every host, then re-enable multipathing on all hosts
[23:37:13] <kdavy__> at least i did it all with zero downtime thanks to xenmotion
[23:37:32] <Trixboxer> yup
[23:37:42] <Trixboxer> live migration works like charm
[23:38:58] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: no there is one issue with it, at least on XS 5.6 FP1 - the qemu dvd rom device on windows hosts goes crazy after live migration and takes up 20% of a vCore with interrupts
[23:39:24] <kdavy__> but you can just disable the device in the vms - its useless anyway
[23:39:32] <Trixboxer> huh ? why would it
[23:39:43] <Trixboxer> coz the /dev get moved all the way
[23:39:53] <kdavy__> Trixboxer: no idea, some driver issue in the guest
[23:40:10] <Trixboxer> may be
[23:40:33] <kdavy__> i didnt spend much time troubleshooting after i figured out what was causing the high interrupts
