[23:08:24] <njw> gerrit protocol: if someone else gets in a change to the same project between when I upload and submit, I need to rebase and re-upload my change. Uploading the new patch set eliminates the 'approved' bit from the reviewer. I can decide to review+verify it myself and submit, but that loses (in the commit message) the fact that someone actually looked at the change. Should I really be going back to my reviewer for another round? Or should

[23:09:41] <kliegs> would be nice if there was a way to pull the lgtm's forward for the CL, but just self-reviewing at that point is fine unless you're worried about the rebasing and want another review
[23:11:32] <ojn> the problem with pulling them forward is that there's no check to see that it's just a simple rebase, so you could "forge" a review approval that way. there's still a link to the gerrit change in the commit if someone wants to go look at the full history, so that should be covered.
[23:16:14] <njw> well, that matches what I've been doing, so I guess that's good. Still feels a little unnerving.
[23:30:01] <kliegs> ojn: I've done rebases where if I click on the submitted file and diff against the previous patch set its identical. it seems like gerrit could detect that
[23:30:30] <kliegs> although don't we do cherry-pick merges which should prevent the need to rebase most of the time? Or is that only for some repos?
[23:31:22] <ojn> kliegs, but gerrit can't discover if your change, while identical now, maybe relies on a different part of the file not having changed, etc.
[23:31:33] <ojn> kernel cherry-picks, not sure about other repos
[23:31:42] <kliegs> ojn: yah true - pulling forward a +2 is probably wrong
[23:32:08] <ojn> but even cherry-picking fails if there's been other changes on the same file, presumably due to the reason above
[23:32:08] <kliegs> I do miss the quicklinks from reitveld showing diffs with previous versions - made it really easy for me to know which files changed instead of needing to click through each
[23:32:28] <ojn> you can still do that
[23:32:36] <kliegs> I can, just not as easily
[23:33:05] <ojn> sure you can. 'patch history' when you're looking at the change?
[23:33:24] <kliegs> Yah, I can do that. but in reitveld I could see from the summary page itself
[23:33:32] <ojn> it will even show you the other changes in the files that have happened but are not modified in this file, which is useful for catching the kind of breakage i'm talking about
[23:33:42] <kliegs> next to the listing of changed files it'd have a "1 2 4" indicating it was different in patchs 1, 2 & 4
